Cardiac Regenerative Potential of Spiny Mice (Acomys cahirinus) Manifests Itself in Expansion of Pacemaker Myocardium and Predominance of Noncanonical, IK, ACH-Independent Pathway of Cholinergic Regulation in Cardiac Pacemaking.

Spiny mice (Acomys cahirinus) exhibit the ability to regenerate the damaged myocardium and functional indices of the heart. demonstrated in various models of cardiac pathologies. Cardioregenerative potential of Acomys is associated with partial preservation of the neonatal phenotype of cardiac tissue in adult animals. The electrophysiology and mechanisms regulating the heart rhythm in Acomys are extremely poorly understood. The EEG was recorded in vivo and bioelectrical activity of the supraventricular myocardium was evaluated and mapped in spiny mice. Pacemaker-type action potentials were det

Experimental Study: Youth vs. Life Experience of Adulthood in Terms of Acute Stress Response.

Age differences in the response to acute stress were studied in young and mature reproductive-age inbred male Wistar rats. Stress was found to increase the corticosterone level in both age groups, while the testosterone level decreased and the leptin concentration increases. In response to stress, young rats showed a classic decrease in the mass coefficients (MCs) of the thymus and liver and an increase in the MCs of the adrenal glands and heart. In contrast, mature rats showed a decrease in the MC of the adrenal glands and stability of the MC of other visceral organs under all experimental co

Hydrogels Based on Recombinant Spidroin Stimulate Proliferation and Migration of Human Corneal Cells.

The effect of recombinant spidroin (RS) hydrogel (HG) on anterior epithelial cells and keratocytes of the human cornea was studied in vitro. Corneal injuries are highly prevalent in developing countries according to the World Health Organization. Various technologies have recently been proposed to restore the damaged surface of the cornea. Use of biodegradable silk-based materials, including recombinant analogs of the spider silk protein spidroin, is an important avenue of research in the field of wound healing and corneal regeneration. Spidroins are well known for their optimal balance of str

Cheetah Acinonyx pardinensis (Felidae, Carnivora) from the Early Pleistocene of Crimea (Taurida Cave).

A mandible fragment of Acinonyx pardinensis (Croizet et Jobert, 1828) is described from the Early Pleistocene locality in the Taurida cave (Crimea, Late Villafranchian, about 1.8-1.5 Ma). This is the first discovery of the genus Acinonyx in the Pleistocene of Crimea. Along with other felids, such as Homotherium, Megantereon, Panthera, Lynx, and Puma, cheetahs were typical representatives of the Late Villafranchian faunas of Eurasia. In the Taurida locality, Acinonyx pardinensis is co-occurred with Homotherium crenatidens, Megantereon adroveri, and Lynx issiodorensis.

Age Specifics of Homeostasis Response to Cold Stress in Wistar Rats: Endurance Improvement or Disorganization?

Cold exposure, especially in combination with exercise, is a common procedure to fortify the body. However, its effects in old age are poorly understood. Using the homeostasis stability coefficient as an indicator, the body response to a 20-min swim in cold water was for the first time studied comprehensively in old and young Wistar rats. Effects on the hormonal, hematological, and morphofunctional systems of the liver and thymus were assessed. Unfavorable age-related changes in the stability of homeostasis were observed in old rats. The changes complicated the recovery after cold stress and r

The Effect of Surgical Procedure in the Nasal Cavity on the Passive Avoidance Conditioning and the Hypothalamic Level of Monoamines in Rats.

A rat biological model of septoplasty was used to study the effect of surgery on passive avoidance conditioning (PAC). Septoplasty was shown to increase anxiety and to reduce exploratory activity in rodents during PAC. A neurochemical analysis of the hypothalamus was carried out immediately after the end of the experiment and showed an increase in norepinephrine (NE) metabolism after septoplasty. The finding was tentatively associated with activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.

Direct Reprogramming of Somatic Skin Cells from a Patient with Huntington's Disease into Striatal Neurons to Create Models of Pathology.

A new in vitro model of Huntington's disease (HD) was developed via a direct reprogramming of dermal fibroblasts from HD patients into striatal neurons. A reprogramming into induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells is obviated in the case of direct reprogramming, which thus yields neurons that preserve the epigenetic information inherent in cells of a particular donor and, consequently, the age-associated disease phenotype. A main histopathological feature of HD was reproduced in the new model; i.e., aggregates of mutant huntingtin accumulated in striatal neurons derived from a patient's fibroblas

Can Shrews Avoid Competition When Hutchinson's Ecological Rule Is Disobeyed?

It is established that Hutchinson's ratio of the weights and sizes of the body and foraging organs in similar species is not fully obeyed in shrew species of the genus Sorex. Similarity in the centroid size of the mandible was observed in the large species S. isodon and S. araneus. Differences in the shape of the mandible, which is intensely used in foraging, were detected between the species by geometric morphometrics. Interspecific differences were found in mandibular indices, which reflect trophic specialization and functional features of the mandibles. Shrews can therefore avoid competitio

Role of Neurohumoral Imbalance at Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in the Antitumor Immune Response. Experimental Study.

The aim of the study is to investigate the growth and development of B16 melanoma in mature male C57Black/6 mice with a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) model. Behavioral, immunohistochemical, morphometric methods, enzyme immunoassay were used. A forced decrease in the level of corticosterone, which is characteristic for PTSD, was established, followed by intensification of the production of increased concentrations of pro-inflammatory interleukins by the cells of the immune system and, at the same time, a decrease in the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines. Priority data were obtain

Drawbacks and Unexpected Advantages of the Response to Modeling Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Old Wistar Rats.

In modeling post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), old Wistar rats exhibit the same general signs of a PTSD-like condition as young rats do. The ratio of testosterone to corticosterone levels was assessed as a new index and proved to provide a guideline for dividing the rat population into low- and high-anxiety groups when modeling PTSD. Several features were observed in behavior, psycho-emotional manifestations, hormone levels, and myocardial state in old rats. A sharp rise in circulating testosterone was for the first time shown to occur in old, but not young, rats in stress, contributing to

Dental Anomaly in Hapalodectes dux (Hapalodectidae, Mesonychia) from the Late Paleocene of Mongolia.

The holotype of Hapalodectes dux Lopatin, 2001 from the Upper Paleocene of Mongolia (Tsagan-Khushu locality, Naran Bulak Formation, Zhigden Member) is a lower jaw with complete dentition, showing healed alveoli in place of the right P3. Examination of the holotype using X-ray microtomography revealed a rare dental anomaly previously unknown in fossil mammals, namely the presence of the inverted (positioned upside down and rotated lingual side labially) impacted premolar inside the dentary. The cause of this anomaly may be an aberration of a tooth bud location or an injury.

Trioecy in Flowering Plants.

Populations of trioecious plants consists of individuals with staminate, pistillate, and hermaphrodite flowers. Trioecy is extremely rare in angiosperms, and relevant data are scarce. A list of trioecious plants found in the global flora was compiled on the basis of literature data and original research. The list includes 80 species of 46 genera, which represent 33 families and 21 orders of flowering plants. Trioecy is found in 7.9% of families, 0.3% of genera, and 0.03% of species in angiosperms. Trioecious species are now unknown in basal angiosperms, uncommon in magnoliids, and rather rare

Distribution of Siboglinids (Annelida, Siboglinidae) in the Laptev Sea and Adjacent Areas of the Arctic Basin.

Biodiversity in the Laptev Sea was assessed for gutless marine worms of the family Siboglinidae (Annelida), whose metabolism is provided by symbiotic bacteria that oxidize hydrogen sulfide and methane. Seven siboglinid species were found within the geographical boundaries of the Laptev Sea, and another species was found in an adjacent sector of the Arctic Basin. The largest number of finds and the greatest biological diversity of siboglinids were observed in the eastern part of the Laptev Sea in a field of numerous methane flares. One find was made in the estuary area of the Lena River at a de

Effects of Heavy Metals on the Metabolome of Pinus sylvestris (Pinaceae).

The effects of Cu, Ni, and Cd on the Pinus sylvestris metabolome was studied in experimental conditions by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Structural changes in plant metabolite network became detectable on day 6 of exposure to the metals, 3-6 days earlier than visual signs of toxicity developed. Differences at the metabolome level arose earlier in a control group of plants, and specific effects of particular metals on the plant metabolome became distinct on day 9. Both nature and concentration of a metal equally contributed to the plant metabolome clustering. Plant responses (ch

Morfofunctional and Molecular Changes in Placenta and Peripheral Blood in Preeclampsia and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and preeclampsia (PE) are common pregnancy complications with similar risk factors. Although GDM is associated with PE, the exact mechanism underlying the association is unclear. The objective of this work was to study the morphofunctional and molecular changes in the placenta and peripheral blood in PE and GDM. Local and systemic changes in the production of several placental proteins were assessed along with markers of inflammation and metabolic disorders. Expression of placental lactogen, trophoblastic β1-glycoprotein, placental alpha-1-microglobulin, and

Early Pleistocene Serotine Bat Eptesicus praeglacialis (Vespertilionidae, Chiroptera) from the Taurida Cave in Crimea.

The cranial and mandibular remains of a large serotine bat Eptesicus praeglacialis Kormos, 1930 are described from the Lower Pleistocene deposits of the Taurida cave in the central Crimea. This is the first finding of the skull material of E. praeglacialis and the first record of the species in Crimea. Judging by the tooth wear stages, the remains of both young and adult specimens are present in the taphocenosis. The small mammal tooth marks on the bones (caused by eating the remnants of soft tissues) in the absence of signs of digestion, characterizing materials from the predatory bird pellet

Rhinolophus mehelyi scythotauricus subsp. nov. (Rhinolophidae, Chiroptera) from the Lower Pleistocene of the Taurida Cave in Crimea.

A new extinct subspecies of the Mehely's horseshoe bat, Rhinolophus mehelyi scythotauricus subsp. nov., is described on the base of an incomplete skull from the Lower Pleistocene deposits of the Taurida cave in the central Crimea. It is the largest member of the R. euryale group. In terms of the evolutionary level, it is intermediate between Plio-Pleistocene R. mehelyi birzebbugensis Storch, 1974 and recent members of the species, but its large size and relatively narrow upper molars may indicate belonging to a separate phylogenetic lineage within R. mehelyi Matschie, 1901. They are assigned to Rhinolophus macrorhinus cimmerius subsp. nov. In dental characters the new subspecies is less specialized than R. m. anomalidens Topál, 1979 from the Late Villafranchian of Central Europe, which implies the origin of the former from an earlier form morphologically close to R. m. macrorhinus Topál, 1963.
