Patterns of alternative tobacco product use among youth experiencing homelessness.

INTRODUCTION: Identifying distinct patterns of tobacco product use can inform efforts to reduce poly-tobacco use among young people, but little is known regarding patterns of use among youth experiencing homelessness. This study identified patterns of using tobacco/nicotine products among youth experiencing homelessness, and assessed whether certain subgroups of youth were more likely than others to engage in specific patterns of use. METHODS: Data were collected from a probability sample of 469 homeless youth who used tobacco in the past month, recruited from 25 service and street sites in L

Non-tobacco nicotine dependence and postoperative outcomes in operative treatment of humeral shaft fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Humeral shaft fractures are common, often affecting younger patients through high-energy mechanisms. With rising use of e-cigarettes, vapes, and nicotine pouches, the impact of non-tobacco nicotine dependence (NTND) on fracture healing remains unclear. This study evaluates postoperative outcomes following fixation of humeral shaft fractures among NTND patients compared with traditional tobacco users and non-nicotine controls. METHODS: The US collaborative network (TriNetX) was queried to identify adults undergoing humeral shaft ORIF between the dates of January 1, 2004, and June

Consumer Experiences with Delta-8-THC: Medical Use, Pharmaceutical Substitution, and Comparisons with Delta-9-THC.

Introduction: Cannabis products containing delta-8-THC became widely available in most of the United States in late 2020 and rapidly became a significant source of revenue for hemp processing companies, especially in states where use of delta-9-THC remains illegal or requires professional authorization for medical use. Scientific research on the use of delta-8-THC is scarce, previous clinical studies included a combined total of 14 participants, leading some state governments to prohibit it until its properties and effects are better understood. Methods: Researchers developed an online survey

Smoking, nicotine and pregnancy 3 (SNAP3) trial: protocol for a randomised controlled trial of enhanced support and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) offered for preloading, lapse recovery and smoking reduction in pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) helps pregnant women quit smoking. Usual National Health Service (NHS) cessation care in pregnancy starts only after women stop smoking and comprises behavioural support and NRT. NRT is stopped if women restart smoking. We hypothesised that NRT would have a bigger effect on cessation in pregnancy if used: (1) to reduce smoking before quitting ('preloading'), (2) during brief smoking lapses after quitting and (3) to help those who cannot stop smoking, to reduce instead. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A two-arm parallel group, open-label, multicentre, ass

Mechanisms of cannabis impairment: Implications for modeling driving performance.

Past research on cannabis has been limited in scope to THC potencies lower than legally available and efforts to integrate the effects into models of driving performance have not been attempted to date. The purpose of this systematic review is to understand the implications for modeling driving performance and describe future research needs. The risk of motor vehicle crashes increases 2-fold after smoking marijuana. Driving during acute cannabis intoxication impairs concentration, reaction time, along with a variety of other necessary driving-related skills. Changes to legislation in North Ame

Extending Gender- and Sex-Based Analyses in Cannabis Research: Findings from an Online Sample of Gender Diverse Young Adult Consumers.

Background: Gender and sex can influence cannabis behaviors and consequences (Cannabis Use Disorder [CUD]). Research typically examines sex and gender independently. Gender analyses often exclude transgender and gender diverse (TGD) populations. The objectives of this study were to (a) replicate less frequent cannabis use among TGD young adults compared to cisgender counterparts (b) compare severity of CUD, and (c) examine the role of sex on cannabis outcomes. Method: Online survey participants between 18 and 34 (N=1213) from the United States who reported past-week cannabis consumption provid

The Relationship Between Cannabis, Cognition, and Schizophrenia: It's Complicated.

The consequences of cannabis use, especially in the context of schizophrenia, have gained increased importance with the legalization of cannabis in North America and across the globe. Cannabis use has multifaceted impacts on cognition in schizophrenia patients and healthy subjects. Healthy subjects, particularly those who initiated cannabis use at earlier ages and used high-potency cannabis for longer durations, exhibited poorer cognition mainly in working memory and attention. Cannabis use in schizophrenia has been associated with symptom exacerbation, longer and more frequent psychotic episo
