BACKGROUND: Bonebridge is an suitable option for conductive hearing loss, however, the traditional approach cannot accomplished a satisfying implantation for patients with congenital malformation or radical mastoidectomy.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical application of retrosigmoid sinus approach in Bonebridge implantation and postoperative evaluation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 11 patients who underwent retrosigmoid sinus approach Bonebridge implantation from March 2016 to September 2019 were retrospectively analyzed, including 6 males and 5 females, aged 12-54 years old (30.6 in average).

OBJECTIVES: Determine if the presence of cerebrospinal fluid in the fundal region of the internal auditory canal on preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans is predictive of improved hearing preservation after removal of vestibular schwannoma through the middle cranial fossa approach. Relationships between fundal fluid, tumor nerve of origin, tumor size, and hearing preservation also are examined.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present study was to compare three methods of estimating the audibility of aided speech using the Baha.
SUBJECTS: 23 Adult Baha users with primarily bilateral conductive hearing loss were recruited from the Bone Conduction Amplification Program at the Institute for Reconstructive Sciences in Medicine in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
METHODS: A test Baha was set to each subject's preferred listening level. The same Baha was used to assess the audibility of the long-term average speech spectrum (LTASS) for each of the following three approaches: 1) Aided soundfield

BACKGROUND: Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) syndrome is a systemic condition characterized by ocular inflammatory disease as well as skin, ear, and meningeal manifestations. Patients with VKH often report tinnitus and hearing loss, but these symptoms tend to be given secondary consideration because most undergo treatment with steroids to prevent blindness resulting from granulomatous uveitis, exudative retinal detachment, and optic nerve inflammation.
METHODS/STUDY DESIGN: In the current retrospective review, 24 patients with this syndrome were screened for auditory system abnormalities. All patie

Ten obligate carriers of Usher syndrome type 2A from 5 different families with 2 affected persons all underwent audiologic, vestibular and ophthalmologic examinations. They had a sensorineural hearing loss which was in excess of that expected for their age at all of the frequencies (0.25-8 kHz) tested, however, only a 10 dB (average) excess in hearing loss at 0.25-0.5 kHz proved to be significant. The speech discrimination scores obtained conformed with the hearing thresholds. Tympanometry, acoustic reflex and brain stem auditory-evoked potential findings were generally normal. Some vestibular

IMPORTANCE: Cisplatin is highly ototoxic but widely used. Evidence is lacking regarding cisplatin-related hearing loss (CRHL) in adult-onset cancer survivors with comprehensive audiologic assessments (eg, Words-in-Noise [WIN] tests, full-spectrum audiometry, and additional otologic measures), as well as the progression of CRHL considering comorbidities, modifiable factors associated with risk, and cumulative cisplatin dose.
OBJECTIVE: To assess CRHL with comprehensive audiologic assessments, including the WIN, evaluate the longitudinal progression of CRHL, and identify factors associated with

Scientific research has significantly propelled advancements in healthcare. One notable application is precision medicine, which seeks to analyze and comprehend disease pathology to offer personalized medical treatments to patients. Targeted oncology, a branch of precision medicine, focuses on identifying and targeting specific molecules that regulate cancer cells, thereby minimizing harm to healthy cells. Different types of targeted therapy against cancer include monoclonal antibodies and small molecules. This manuscript intends to provide an overview of the influence of these targeted oncolo

CONCLUSION: We tested one prototype of a new audioprosthesis including the audioprocessor, the implemented algorithms and fitting platform in a small group of selected patients with mixed hypoacusis due to earlier bilateral radical mastoidectomy. It was effective to compensate the conductive and the neurosensory components of those patients. Results regarding the energy, frequency and other requirements of the output transduction make it possible to develop a suitable actuator with the available Micro-Electromechanic-Machine-System (MEMS) technology to substitute the conventional transducer of

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Sensorineural hearing loss is a disturbing complication of microvascular decompression (MVD) for trigeminal neuralgia with an incidence of 1% to 23.8%. Cerebellar retraction with increasing I-V interpeak latency (IPL) during intraoperative brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) has been identified as the chief cause of acoustic injury. This study was designed to eliminate cerebellar retraction by a modification of the standard suboccipital craniectomy.
STUDY DESIGN: Nine consecutive patients undergoing surgery for trigeminal neuralgia were prospectively selected for

Hearing preservation is a frequently mentioned phrase in the growing field of skull base surgery. Many authors have attempted to identify prognostic factors for successful hearing preservation, and many have suggested alternative procedures for preserving serviceable hearing. Few have mentioned hearing improvement with skull base surgical procedures. In this article we present the hearing results of 25 surgical procedures for primary petrous apex lesions. These include 13 cholesterol granulomas, 5 cholesteatomas, 4 mucoceles, and 3 eosinophilic granulomas. Surgical approaches included 14 trans

For adult patients with single-sided deafness (SSD), treatment with a cochlear implant (CI) is well established as an acceptable and beneficial hearing rehabilitation method administered routinely in clinical practice. In contrast, for children with SSD, CI has been applied less often to date, with the rationale to decide either on a case-by-case basis or under the realm of clinical research. The aim of our clinical study was to evaluate the longitudinal benefits of CI for a group of children diagnosed with SSD and to compare their outcomes with respect to patient characteristics. OBJECTIVE: Hearing loss is a common symptom in patients with cochleovestibular schwannoma. Clinical and histologic observations have suggested that the hearing loss may be caused by both retrocochlear and cochlear mechanisms. Our goal was to perform a detailed assessment of cochlear pathology in patients with vestibular schwannoma (VS).
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of temporal bone histopathology.
SETTING: Multi-center study.
MATERIAL: Temporal bones from 32 patients with unilateral, sporadic VS within the internal auditory canal.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate hearing outcomes in patients treated with third generation bisphosphonates for otosclerosis-related sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL).
HYPOTHESIS: Otosclerosis is a disease of abnormal bone remodeling in the otic capsule. In recent years, third generation bisphosphonates, with more powerful anti-resorptive properties and increased bone affinity, have demonstrated effectiveness in the treatment of osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases. We hypothesized that newer generation bisphosphonates, such as risedronate and zoledronate, would be effective in slowing the pr

OBJECTIVE: The high energy demand of the auditory and visual pathways render these sensory systems prone to diseases that impair mitochondrial function. Primary open-angle glaucoma, a neurodegenerative disease of the optic nerve, has recently been associated with a spectrum of mitochondrial abnormalities. This study sought to investigate auditory processing in individuals with open-angle glaucoma. DESIGN/STUDY SAMPLE: Twenty-seven subjects with open-angle glaucoma underwent electrophysiologic (auditory brainstem response), auditory temporal processing (amplitude modulation detection), and spee
