Tumors of the parathyroid glands. Changes in clinical features and in noninvasive localization studies sensitivity.

Primary hyperparathyroidism is the most common cause of hypercalcemia and 80-85% of the patients have parathyroid tumors. The purpose of this retrospective review was to analyse whether differences exist between patients with parathyroid tumors treated in the 1980s and 1990s. Between 1980-1997, 253 patients underwent initial surgical neck exploration for hyperfunctioning parathyroid tumors. Renal (polyuria, nocturia, renal colic due to lithiasis), rheumatologic (bone and joint pain), neurological (fatigue, memory loss, depression) and gastrointestinal (dyspepsia, anorexia, nausea) symptoms wer

Rhinoliths: Analysis of 24 Interesting Forgotten Foreign Body Cases.

Rhinoliths are petrified masses formed by accumulation of endogenous or exogenous salts around a nidus. Although rarely formed by the body, the most common cause is foreign bodies forgotten in the nose at childhood. Rhinoliths are rare and have been reported as a single case report in the literature. In this study, 24 different and different cases will be analyzed. Twenty-four interesting patients who were operated for rhinolith in the otorhinolaryngology clinic between 2014 and 2019 and were not seen in the literature before were analyzed retrospectively. The characteristics of these patients

Bilateral tonsilloliths and calcified carotid atheromas: case report and literature review.

Tonsilloliths and calcified carotid atheromas are dystrophic calcifications that can be identified in routine oral radiographs. This case report is the first description in the English literature of the simultaneous occurrence of bilateral tonsilloliths and calcified carotid atheromas. Panoramic oral radiographs from a 62-year-old woman presented bilateral radiopaque images of the left and right ramus of the mandible; multiple and well-defined radiopacities below the left angle of the mandible, next to the C3-C4 cervical vertebrae; and a single radiopacity on the right side between the hyoid b

Activation of the TGR5/cAMP/PKA/CREB axis in cholangiocytes mediates epithelial-mesenchymal transition and fibrosis in hepatolithiasis.

BACKGROUND: The molecular mechanisms linking bile acid signaling to biliary fibrosis in hepatolithiasis are unclear. We investigated the role of the bile acid receptor TGR5 in driving fibrotic progression. METHODS: We employed an integrated strategy. TGR5 expression was assessed in human hepatolithiasis tissues and bioinformatics databases. A hepatolithiasis mouse model was compared with TGR5-knockout (TGR5-/-) mice, analyzing lipid metabolism, cholesterol transport, and fibrosis markers via ELISA, qPCR, and immunohistochemistry. In vitro, human intrahepatic biliary epithelial cells (HIBECs) w

[Combined approach for parotid lithiases: A 9 cases retrospective study].

INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive techniques (MIT), including sialendoscopy, extracorporeal lithotripsy and intraoral approach, have to be preferred in parotid stones removal. In case of MIT failure, a combined intra- and extra-oral approach can be achieved. The aim of our study was to evaluate the efficacy and the complications of these combined approaches. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study has been conducted on patients treated between 2006 and 2015. All adult patients presenting with one or more parotid stones and in whom TMI failed have been included. Age and sex of the patients

Pathomechanisms of nephrolithiasis.

Lithiasis continues to be an important factor in chronic renal disease, since it leads to chronic tubulo-interstitial nephritis, which is estimated to be involved in 15- 30% of cases of end stage chronic renal insufficiency. It is believed that in order for a stone to be formed, a solid phase needs to be first produced from microcrystals (the nucleus), which are formed from salts (and other substances) that are found dissolved in the urine (nucleosis of crystals). Afterwards, the crystals that constitute the core increase in size and link up with each other (incorporation). The main physiochem

Chronic pancreatitis and inflammatory bowel disease: true or coincidental association?

OBJECTIVE: Several cases of pancreatitis have been described during the course of Crohn's disease (CD) or ulcerative colitis (UC), but many of them were related to either biliary lithiasis or drug intake. We tried to evaluate the clinical and morphological features of so-called idiopathic pancreatitis associated with inflammatory bowel disease and to define their pathological characteristics. METHODS: Chronic idiopathic pancreatitis was diagnosed on the basis of abnormal pancreatograms suggestive of chronic pancreatitis associated with or without impaired exocrine pancreatic function, or path

[Functional urination disorders in patients recovering in an intensive care unit for more than 30 days].

Patients in rest-homes, intensive care units, long hospitalization and dialysis and whoever stays in a hospital continuously or occasionally for long periods of time may run into the well-known and typical complications of prolonged hospitalization. We have studied the urologic aspect in all the cases of the Medical- Surgical Emergency Institute in the Hospital of Ancona (seated in Torrette), over the period 1990-96, in patients hospitalized for at least 30 days. All the patients were followed and studied with the same method, though taking into account their different pathological conditions.

Safety, Feasibility, and Efficacy of Bilateral Synchronous Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy for Bilateral Stone Disease: Evidence from a Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: With the evolution of endourologic technology, bilateral synchronous percutaneous nephrolithotomy (BS-PCNL) has emerged as a potentially practical intervention for patients with bilateral lithiasis. Although tradition has favored a staged approach, an increasing number of original studies have reported their experiences with the synchronous approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A Cochrane style search was performed after development of a sensitive and predefined search strategy. Primary outcomes measured were initial and final stone-free rate (SFR), drop in hemoglobin, hospital stay,
