Primary (localized) non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) of the ovary is rare. We studied eight cases of primary ovarian NHL to better understand the clinicopathologic and immunophenotypic features of these tumors. The patients ranged in age from 29 to 62 years (mean 47 years). Pelvic complaints were the most common symptoms; however, three of eight neoplasms were discovered incidentally. All tumors were unilateral and Ann Arbor stage I(E). Ewing sarcoma is an uncommon neoplasm considered in the differential diagnosis of tumors with "small round cell" morphology, but its occurrence in the gynecologic tract has only been sporadically documented. Herein, we describe the largest cohort of Ewing sarcoma localized to the female genital tract to date, and emphasize their clinicopathologic resemblance to more common gynecologic neoplasms. Malignant rhabdoid tumors (MRTs) are aggressive childhood neoplasms, occurring mainly in the kidney and brain. We describe 2 unusual cases of extrarenal and noncranial location (liver and soft tissue with dissemination) mimicking hepatoblastoma, neuroblastoma or Ewing sarcoma. AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the molecular alterations in primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) of the female genital tract.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features of 8 gynecologic PNET cases (3 cervical, 1 vaginal, and 4 ovarian). Ewing sarcoma family tumors (EFTs) of the head and neck are rare and may be difficult to diagnose, as they display significant histologic overlap with other more common undifferentiated small blue round cell malignancies. We report here that the autocrine signaling mediated by growth and differentiation factor 6 (GDF6), a member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family of cytokines, maintains Ewing sarcoma growth by preventing Src hyperactivation. Surprisingly, Ewing sarcoma depends on the prodomain, not the BMP domain, of GDF6. We demonstrate that the GDF6 prodomain is a ligand for CD99, a transmembrane protein that has been widely used as a marker of Ewing sarcoma. BACKGROUND AND AIM: Ewing family of tumors (EFT) encompass a group of small blue round cell tumors, including Ewing sarcoma (ES) and EWSR1-negative undifferentiated small round cell sarcoma. The distinction between the EFTs is essential from a clinical perspective due to prognostic and therapeutic differences and is substantiated by the advent of molecular testing in the modern era.
