Spontaneous rupture of solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous rupture of solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas is an unusual complication during pregnancy. CASE: At 19 weeks of gestation, a 29-year-old woman presented with a pancreatic mass and upper abdominal pain radiating to the back. On the third day of admission, shock and peritoneal signs developed. Exploratory laparotomy and subsequent subtotal pancreatectomy were performed for a bleeding tumor. Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm was confirmed by pathological examination. The patient delivered a healthy full-term girl vaginally. Eight months postoperatively, the clini

Surgical aspects of Clostridium septicum septicemia.

Clostridium septicum is a virulent cause of gas gangrene and sepsis. Although thought to be rare, a survey of our affiliated hospitals for a recent five-year period disclosed eight cases. Seven of the eight had an occult malignant neoplasm. The eighth patient was thought to be preleukemic. All seven malignant neoplasms involved the gastrointestinal tract. Four patients were admitted with gangrene of an extremity, three with abdominal pain, and one with both. In four patients, C septicum septicemia appeared in an extremity before the underlying gastrointestinal malignant neoplasm was recognized

Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas causing obstructive jaundice: Case report of a rare entity.

INTRODUCTION: Solid pseudopapillary neoplasm (SPN) is an extremely rare, low-grade, malignant pancreatic tumour with an excellent prognosis. We describe a case of SPN causing obstructive jaundice in a young female, thus mimicking pancreatic adenocarcinoma clinically and radiologically. CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old female presented with abdominal pain for 12 h, icterus, and an epigastric mass measuring 3 × 3 cm. Imaging studies revealed features of pancreatic neoplasm in the head of pancreas, possibly pancreatic adenocarcinoma. However, ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology of

A rare case of extrahepatic biliary mucinous cystic neoplasm in a middle-aged woman: A case report.

Biliary mucinous cystic neoplasms are very rare tumors of the biliary tract with malignant potential. Preoperative diagnosis is challenging, as clinical, biochemical and radiological features are not specific. Surgical resection with negative margins is the gold standard treatment for these uncommon lesions. A 55-year-old woman presented at the Third Department of Surgery (Attikon University Hospital, Athens, Greece) with a history of mild right upper quadrant (RUQ) abdominal pain and jaundice. A 2-cm lesion in the distal common bile was identified by imaging. Following discussion in our multi

Synchronous laparoscopic resection of colorectal and renal/adrenal neoplasms.

Synchronous laparoscopic resections of coexisting abdominal diseases are shown to be feasible without additional postoperative morbidity. We report our experience with synchronous laparoscopic resection of colorectal carcinoma and renal/adrenal neoplasms with an emphasis on surgical and oncologic outcomes. Five patients diagnosed to have synchronous colorectal carcinoma and renal/adrenal neoplasms (renal cell carcinoma in 2 patients, adrenal cortical adenoma in 2 patients, and adrenal metastasis in 1 patient) underwent synchronous laparoscopic resection. The median operative time was 420 minut

Mesenteric desmoid tumor causing ureteric obstruction.

Desmoid tumors are rare, accounting for just 0.03% of all neoplasms and less than 3% of all soft tissue tumors. Although these tumors are benign, they are locally invasive and can cause considerable morbidity and mortality. We describe the case of a 16-year-old female who presented with hydronephroureter secondary to an intra-abdominal desmoid tumor. This case report draws the attention of urologists to the diagnostic dilemma and therapeutic challenges associated with an intra-abdominal mass causing ureteral obstruction especially in young patients.

Primary carcinoma of the ureter--a 24-year-study from south India.

This study from India has envisaged a characterization of primary carcinomas of the ureter using a review of all available Indian literature over a period of 32 years. The character of the tumor in the Indian patients was clinically; pain, abdominal lump and haematuria with most neoplasms being single, situated in the ureteric pelvis and such neoplasms being squamous cell in type. The others were transitional cell carcinomas. Similar ureteric neoplasms reported from Western literature showed that the reporting authors gave the predominant complaint as haematuria alone, the neoplasm being usual

Mucinous cystic neoplasms of the pancreas associated with pregnancy: Two case reports.

RATIONALE: Although rare, pancreatic neoplasms can occur during pregnancy, both in benign and malignant forms. Mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCNs) of the pancreas, a type of these neoplasms, are precursor lesions to invasive pancreatic cancer. The presence of the ovarian-type stroma is a defining feature. PATIENT CONCERNS: The first case was a 38-year-old woman in her 18th week of pregnancy with abdominal pain that worsens a few weeks later. The second case was a 30-year-old woman in her 17th week of pregnancy with abdominal pain in the left hypochondrium. DIAGNOSIS: The patients were under cli

From the spectrum of PEComa: a renal angiomyolipoma.

PEComas or Perivascular Epithelioid Cell neoplasms are uncommon mesenchymal origin neoplasms composed of perivascular epithelioid cells. They affect various anatomic sites, kidneys being one of them. Renal PEComas are further rare, posing a challenge to include them in the differential diagnoses. We present a case of a type of renal PEComa in a 54-year old post-menopausal female with vague abdominal pain. Imaging revealed a large left perinephric mass initially suspected to be a liposarcoma. Surgical excision and subsequent histopathological evaluation confirmed a benign, fat predominant renal

Pseudomyxoma peritonei induced by low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm accompanied by rectal cancer: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a disease involving the peritoneum characterized by the production of large quantities of mucinous ascites. PMP has a low incidence, is difficult to diagnose, and has a guarded prognosis. PMP induced by low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm is extremely rare, and PMP accompanied by rectal cancer is even rarer. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a unique case of a 70-year-old male with PMP induced by low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm accompanied by rectal cancer. The patient's clinical, surgical, and histologic data were reviewed. The patient had

An extremely rare cause of acute abdomen in pregnancy: ruptured pancreatic mucinous cystadenocarcinoma.

Pancreatic cystadenocarcinoma is an extremely rare neoplasm in pregnancy. To our knowledge, there have been 2 published cases of pancreatic mucinous cystadenocarcinoma (PMC) during pregnancy in the literature; one of which was reported to have ruptured into the abdominal cavity. We present a second case of ruptured PMC resulting in acute abdomen in 36 weeks of pregnancy. Rupture of mucinous cystic neoplasms of pancreas including PMC should be remembered in acute abdomen during pregnancy.

Duodenal gangliocytic paraganglioma: A rare cause for gastrointestinal polyp.

Duodenal gangliocytic paragangliomas are rare neoplasms often arising in the duodenum in close proximity to the ampulla of Vater. These neoplasms are considered to have a benign behavior with lymph node metastases being a rare phenomenon and distant metastases even more so. Although a standardized treatment has not been determined, a margin-free tumor resection seems to be the best treatment modality. We report herein the case of a 36-year-old female who presented with abdominal pain and was found to have a polyp in the second part of duodenum which was excised endoscopically. Histopathology a

Use of immune repertoire sequencing to resolve discordant microscopic and immunochemical findings in a case of T cell-rich large B cell lymphoma in a young dog.

BACKGROUND: Lymphocytic neoplasms with frequent reactive lymphocytes are uncommonly reported in dogs, and can pose a diagnostic challenge. Different diagnostic modalities such as cytology, flow cytometry, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and clonality testing, are sometimes required for a diagnosis. This report illustrates the value of using a multi-modal diagnostic approach to decipher a complex lymphocytic tumor, and introduces immune repertoire sequencing as a diagnostic adjunct. CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-month-old Great Dane was referred for marked ascites. Cytologic analysis of abdomi

[Rare differential diagnosis on suspected liver tumor].

This case report describes a 77-year old woman with a leiomyosarcoma of subhepatic inferior caval vein. The presented symptom was unspecific abdominal pain. Ultrasound and CT suggested a primary liver tumor. MRI revealed retroperitoneal location of the neoplasm. The tumor was resected completely and ICV was replaced by a PTF-graft. Vascular leiomyosarcoma is a rare tumor entity, which often is diagnosed in advanced stage. Depending on location it can be mistaken for neoplasms of other organs.

Low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm mimicking an ovarian cyst: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Appendiceal mucocele (AM) is a very rare neoplasm with an incidence of 0.2-0.3% of all appendectomy specimens. AM usually defined as an intraluminal dilation of the appendix in response to mucin accumulation. The preoperative diagnosis is difficult and can be misdiagnosed to any of the other differential diagnosis especially in female patients. If it is suspected, imaging modalities and colonoscopy can be helpful as a guide for the right surgical approach. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 41-year-old lady who found to have an appendicular tumor discovered incidentally on magnetic resonan
