Predicting the acceptance of advanced rider assistance systems.

The strong prevalence of human error as a crash causation factor in motorcycle accidents calls for countermeasures that help tackling this issue. Advanced rider assistance systems pursue this goal, providing the riders with support and thus contributing to the prevention of crashes. However, the systems can only enhance riding safety if the riders use them. For this reason, acceptance is a decisive aspect to be considered in the development process of such systems. In order to be able to improve behavioural acceptance, the factors that influence the intention to use the system need to be ident

Survey of pedestrian detection for advanced driver assistance systems.

Advanced driver assistance systems (ADASs), and particularly pedestrian protection systems (PPSs), have become an active research area aimed at improving traffic safety. The major challenge of PPSs is the development of reliable on-board pedestrian detection systems. Due to the varying appearance of pedestrians (e.g., different clothes, changing size, aspect ratio, and dynamic shape) and the unstructured environment, it is very difficult to cope with the demanded robustness of this kind of system. Two problems arising in this research area are the lack of public benchmarks and the difficulty i

[Effectiveness of a training programme in reducing occupational injuries: the Turin-Novara high-speed railway line experience].

BACKGROUND: There is little evidence in the literature to suggest that safety training is effective in reducing injuries at the workplace. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at assessing the impact of a safety training programme on injury rates during construction work on the Turin-Novara high-speed railway line (2002-2006). METHODS: We adopted a before-after study design. Since workers were enrolled and trained at different times, pre- and post-training periods were calculated individually for each worker RESULTS: At the end of the training programme, the incidence of occupational injuries had fa

All-terrain vehicle rules and regulations: impact on pediatric mortality.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: All-terrain vehicles (ATV) use by children leads to severe injury and death. Since the US Consumer Product Safety Commission consent decree expired in 1998, there has been little movement in regulating ATV use for children (<16 yr). The authors hypothesized that states with laws and regulations restricting pediatric ATV use may abrogate excess death compared with states without such restrictions. METHODS: Pediatric mortality data reported to the consumer product safety commission from 1982 to 1998 were analyzed as well as state all-terrain vehicle requirements compiled by

The effects of age and experience on accidents with injuries: should the licensing age be raised?

In Canadian Provinces and in several states of the United States the minimal legal age to drive a motor vehicle is 16 years old and in some, it is 15. The excess mortality and morbidity registered by 15 to 24-year-old drivers is well known. Several studies have reported that accident rates decrease with experience, but the effect of the age of new drivers has not been well documented. The objective is to study injury accident rates in terms of the age and experience factors. The data sources are computer files of the Government Insurance Corporation (Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec

Wheels of Misfortune: All-Terrain Vehicles and Utility Task Vehicles.

In this article, authors provide a historical context for the increasing dangers of all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and side-by-side and utility task vehicles (UTV) used by children and teens. In addition, the article describes the design features that make these vehicles prone to crashes and particularly dangerous to children. Study data related to the characteristics of riders, crash and injury mechanisms, risk factors, and resulting injuries are also summarized. Finally, effective injury prevention strategies using approaches from engineering, education and laws/enforcement are outlined, with a p

The Impact of a Statewide Coalition to Decrease Pediatric All-Terrain Vehicle Injuries.

Children lack the cognitive judgment and motor skills to safely operate all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in all situations. The Trauma Team clinicians at Nemours Children's Health System/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children (N/AIDHC) were concerned about the severity of injuries sustained by children when they were either the driver or a passenger on an ATV. Although this subset of children within the trauma registry did not account for a high volume of trauma patients, these children sustained a higher proportion of severe injuries. In 2012, the Trauma Team at N/AIDHC partnered with Nemours Heal

[Challenges in Traffic for Blind and Visually Impaired People and Strategies for their Safe Participation].

BACKGROUND: Blind and visually impaired people experience special risks and hazards in road traffic. This refers to participation as a driver, bicycle rider and pedestrian. MATERIAL AND METHODS: These risks are shown by a review of international research studies and a study by the author, where 45 people with Usher syndrome were asked about their accident rates and causes as driver, bicycle rider and pedestrian. In addition, basic legal information has been worked out to demonstrate the visual conditions of people with visual impairment for participation in road traffic. RESULTS: The researc

Accidental deaths occurring in bed: review of cases and proposal of preventive strategies.

The bed is thought to be a safe place, but posses a number of risks that can cause deaths. To identify the causes of accidental death in bed and propose strategies for the prevention of further accidents, we surveyed and analyzed the literature on accidental deaths in bed from Japan and abroad, as well as legal cases related to accidental death in bed in Japan. A search of the medical literature in Japan (1983-2007), abroad (1976-2007), and Japan's legal cases (1989-2007) located 39 cases. The vast majority of accidental deaths in bed occur among infants and elderly individuals with neurologic

Bicycle injuries in Western Sweden: a comparison between counties.

The objectives of the study were to investigate whether there are differences in the incidence of bicycle-related injuries by geographic district (county), age, and gender in Sweden's Western Road Administration Region, and to utilize any detected differences to suggest priorities for intervention and prevention. Injury data come from the Swedish national hospital-discharge registry and a specialized national register of occupational injuries. Both bodily injuries in general and head injuries in particular show intra-regional differences. The rural part of Skaraborg County was shown to have a

The long-term effects of a token economy on safety performance in open-pit mining.

A token economy that used trading stamps as tokens was instituted at two dangerous open-pit mines. Employees earned stamps for working without lost-time injuries, for being in work groups in which all other workers had no lost-time injuries, for not being involved in equipment-damaging accidents, for making adopted safety suggestions, and for unusual behavior which prevented an injury or accident. They lost stamp awards if they or other workers in their group were injured, caused equipment damage, or failed to report accidents or injuries. The stamps could be exchanged for a selection of thous

[Eye injuries caused by a defective high pressure hose in mines. An analyse in 50 cases (author's transl)].

We analyse eye injuries in 50 miners who came to our Eye Hospital following an accident involving a defective high pressure hose. Depending on the nature of the accident we can distinguish 3 types, correlating with the severity of the injury. The majority of cases presented primarily as blunt bulbus traumata. Severe sequelae consisted of lens opacities and retinal damage. We discuss methods of prevention.

Management of a fire in the operating room.

Operating room (OR) fires remain a significant source of liability for anesthesia providers and injury for patients, despite existing practice guidelines and other improvements in operating room safety. Factors contributing to OR fires are well understood and these occurrences are generally preventable. OR personnel must be familiar with the fire triad which consists of a fuel supply, an oxidizing agent, and an ignition source. Existing evidence shows that OR-related fires can result in significant patient complications and malpractice claims. Steps to reduce fires include taking appropriate s

Preventable anesthesia mishaps: a study of human factors.

A modified critical-incident analysis technique was used in a retrospective examination of the characteristics of human error and equipment failure in anesthetic practice. The objective was to uncover patterns of frequently occurring incidents that are in need of careful prospective investigation. Forty-seven interviews were conducted with staff and resident anesthesiologists at one urban teaching institution, and descriptions of 359 preventable incidents were obtained. Twenty-three categories of details from these descriptions were subjected to computer-aided analysis for trends and patterns.

Prevention and Treatment of Drowning.

Nearly 4,000 drowning deaths occur annually in the United States, with drowning representing the most common injury-related cause of death in children one to four years of age. Drowning is a process that runs the spectrum from brief entry of liquid into the airways with subsequent clearance and only minor temporary injury, to the prolonged presence of fluid in the lungs leading to lung dysfunction, hypoxia, neurologic and cardiac abnormalities, and death. The World Health Organization has defined drowning as "the process of experiencing respiratory impairment from submersion/immersion in liqui

Contact dermatitis--irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis and protein contact dermatitis--are the most common occupational skin diseases, most often localized to the hands. Contact urticaria is rarer The main occupational irritants are wet work, detergents and disinfectants, cutting oils, and solvents. The main occupational allergens are rubber additives, metals (chromium, nickel, cobalt), plastics (epoxy resins, acrylic), biocides and plants. Diagnosis is based on clinical examination, medical history and allergy testing. For a number of irritating or sensitizing agents, ir

Immediate medical consequences of nuclear accidents. Lessons from Chernobyl.

The immediate medical response to the nuclear accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power station involved containment of the radioactivity and evacuation of the nearby population. The next step consisted of assessment of the radiation dose received by individuals, based on biological dosimetry, and treatment of those exposed. Medical care involved treatment of skin burns; measures to support bone marrow failure, gastrointestinal tract injury, and other organ damage (ie, infection prophylaxis and transfusions) for those with lower radiation dose exposure; and bone marrow transplantation for those
