Structurally conserved C-RFa revealed prolactin releasing activity in vitro and gene expression changes in pituitary of seasonally acclimatized carp.

Here we show the cloning and characterization of a novel homolog of prepro C-RFa cDNA from Cyprinus carpio. The deduced preprohormone precursor of 115 amino acids leads to a mature bioactive peptide of 20 amino acids with identical sequence to other teleost C-RFa. Modeling of the mature C-RFa peptide highlighted significant similarity to homologous human PrRP20, specifically the conserved amphipathic system defined by the C-terminal alpha-helix. Clearly, the synthetic C-RFa peptide stimulated prolactin release from primary cultured fish pituitary cells. For the first time, significant variatio

One night at 1,900 m prompts ventilatory acclimatization without altering cardiac autonomic regulation at 3,000 m in males with coronary artery disease.

Spending a single night at moderate altitude before ascending to high altitude may enhance ventilatory acclimatization but also exacerbate sympathetic activation, a response that should be carefully pondered in persons with coronary artery disease (CAD). Ten males with CAD participated in this randomized placebo-controlled crossover trial in a hypobaric chamber, where they slept either at simulated 1,900 m (intervention) or in control conditions (250 m, placebo) before being decompressed to 3,000 m the following morning. Respiratory polygraphy was performed each night. Peripheral oxygen satura

Engineering Chlorella pyrenoidosa via atmospheric and room-temperature plasma mutagenesis and microbial microdroplet culture acclimatization for enhanced treatment of high-concentration oxytetracycline wastewater.

Oxytetracycline (OTC) wastewater generated during the crystallization stage (OTC-CW) poses substantial challenges to conventional biological treatment processes. In the present study, an optimized microalgal strain (M-2) was developed through iterative atmospheric and room-temperature plasma mutagenesis and microbial microdroplet culture acclimatization, exhibiting markedly enhanced adaptability and treatment performance in OTC-CW relative to the wild-type strain (WT). Compared with WT, the tolerance of M-2 to OTC-CW was significantly enhanced, with optical density (OD680) attaining 1.20 and d

Effect of short-term high-altitude acclimatization on the relationship between cerebral blood flow and symptoms of mild acute mountain sickness in males.

People who climb high altitudes frequently experience headaches, which are the primary symptoms of acute mountain sickness (AMS). Although headaches and AMS are primarily caused by hypoxia, they remain poorly understood, specifically, the effects of regional cerebral blood flow on headache and AMS. In this high-altitude laboratory study, we investigated the hypothesis that regional cerebrovascular responses to high-altitude (3,776 m) sojourns are associated with AMS symptoms. The internal carotid artery (ICA), vertebral artery (VA), cardiorespiratory and vascular responses, and symptoms of AMS

Siberian Sturgeon (Acipenser baerii, Brandt, 1869) the Relationship Between Genetic Resources and Acclimatization: Ecology, Conservation, and the Nutritional Significance of Meat and Caviar.

The Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii, Brandt, 1869) is a potamodromous freshwater species with major ecological and commercial importance. Natural populations across the main Siberian River basins have declined so severely that the species is now classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. This narrative analysis synthesizes current scientific knowledge regarding the ecology, reproductive biology, conservation status, and nutritional value of products derived from A. baerii, with the aim of providing an integrated perspective on this species, which has recently been introduced

Time course and magnitude of ventilatory and renal acid-base acclimatization following rapid ascent to and residence at 3,800 m over nine days.

Rapid ascent to high altitude imposes an acute hypoxic and acid-base challenge, with ventilatory and renal acclimatization countering these perturbations. Specifically, ventilatory acclimatization improves oxygenation, but with concomitant hypocapnia and respiratory alkalosis. A compensatory, renally mediated relative metabolic acidosis follows via bicarbonate elimination, normalizing arterial pH(a). The time course and magnitude of these integrated acclimatization processes are highly variable between individuals. Using a previously developed metric of renal reactivity (RR), indexing the chan

High altitude with monotonous environment has significant impact on mood and cognitive performance of acclimatized lowlanders: Possible role of altered serum BDNF and plasma homocysteine level.

BACKGROUND: Monotony resulting due to the wilderness, sparse population and isolation from society could adversely affect human physiology and cause mood alterations. Thus, observations need to be conducted in order to elucidate the possible role of circulating biomarkers in inducing altered mood and cognitive performance following prolonged exposure to high altitude (HA) with persistent monotonous environment. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed towards investigating the impact of monotonous environment in remote HA on mood and cognitive performance of human volunteers and its correlation wit

Acute Mountain Sickness Following Incremental Trekking to High Altitude: Correlation With Plasma Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Levels and the Possible Effects of Dexamethasone and Acclimatization Following Re-exposure.

Purpose: The recognition and treatment of high-altitude illness (HAI) is increasingly important in global emergency medicine. High altitude related hypobaric hypoxia can lead to acute mountain sickness (AMS), which may relate to increased expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and subsequent blood-brain barrier (BBB) compromise. This study aimed to establish the relationship between AMS and changes in plasma VEGF levels during a high-altitude ascent. VEGF level changes with dexamethasone, a commonly used AMS medication, may provide additional insight into AMS. Methods: Twelve

Acetazolamide and exercise hypoxia.

Acetazolamide is useful for acclimatizing to high altitude. How long it should be taken, and the physiological consequences of stopping it have not been thoroughly studied. We investigated the effect of acetazolamide cessation on exercise oxygenation at different altitudes and durations of use. Three groups were studied: group 1 acclimatized to 4,060 m for 6 days while taking acetazolamide 250 mg three times a day. On day 7 acetazolamide was stopped, then resumed on day 8. Standardized exercise oximetry was performed each day. The protocol for group 2 was identical to group 1, except acclimati

MOTS-c attenuates cardiac dysfunction following high altitude exposure by promoting mitophagy.

Prolonged exposure to high altitude (HA) results in a range of systemic changes, some of which, specifically for the heart, particularly cardiac changes, remain difficult to reverse after returning to low altitude. Cardiac de-acclimatization after HA exposure and its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, mice were subjected to a decompression chamber to simulate a 6000-m altitude exposure for 10 days, followed by the other 10-day de-acclimatization period at a lower altitude of 400 m. The cardiac dysfunction induced by HA exposure persisted throughout the de-acclimatization, acc

From adaptation to maladaptation: regulatory reserve and ventilatory control responses to high altitude.

Altitude exposure can promote beneficial physiological adaptations but may also lead to altitude-related illnesses. Despite decades of research, the mechanisms explaining why some individuals acclimatize successfully whereas others do not remain incompletely understood. Traditional models of altitude acclimatization focus on the steps of the oxygen cascade but only partially account for the marked interindividual variability observed in acclimatization. In this perspective, the concept of regulatory reserve, defined as the capacity of integrated physiological control systems to maintain homeos

Effects of chronic hypoxia on MK-801-induced changes in the acute hypoxic ventilatory response.

Chronic hypoxia increases the sensitivity of the central nervous system to afferent input from carotid body chemoreceptors. We hypothesized that this process involves N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-mediated mechanisms and predicted that chronic hypoxia would change the effect of the NMDA receptor blocker dizocilpine (MK-801) on the poikilocapnic hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR). Male Sprague-Dawley rats were studied before and after acclimatization to hypoxia (70 Torr inspiratory Po(2) for 9 days). We measured ventilation (VI) and the HVR before and after systemic MK-801 treatment (3 m

A review of safety risk management and optimization strategies for physical education classes in Chinese schools in heat-stress environments.

Global warming influences rising temperatures, making outdoor physical education classes progressively challenging to organize. While heat acclimatization is essential for athletic development, the conventional emphasis on "endurance" training in Chinese schools sometimes overlook the physical limitations of youths. This paper reviews outdoor sports in heat acclimatization related published articles and examines the body's response to heat stress and evaluates whether physical education professionals are prepared to reduce these risks. This review found that many coaches and teachers lack the

Oxygen is toxic in the cold in C. elegans.

INTRODUCTION: Temperature and oxygen are two factors that profoundly affect survival limits of animals; too much or too little of either is lethal. However, humans and other animals can exhibit exceptional survival when oxygen and temperature are simultaneously low. This research investigates the role of oxygen in the cold shock death of Caenorhabditis elegans. METHODS: The survival of C. elegans populations in combinations of oxygen concentrations and was assayed. Additionally, the effect of cold acclimatization, mutations in the cold acclimatization pathway, compounds, and antioxidant prote

Influence of photoperiod and temperature on serum melatonin in the diamondback water snake, Nerodia rhombifera.

Serum melatonin concentrations in the diamondback water snake, Nerodia rhombifera, were measured with a radioimmunoassay to determine the influence of photoperiod and temperature on melatonin levels. A diel cycle of serum melatonin, with elevated concentrations during scotophase, occurred in snakes acclimatized for 2 weeks to a 12L:12D photoperiod and 25 degrees. This cycle persisted in snakes acclimatized to a reverse photoperiod, with a longer duration of elevated scotophase levels. In snakes acclimatized to a normal 12L:12D photoperiod and 10 degrees, photophase serum melatonin concentratio

Dopaminergic mechanisms of neural plasticity in respiratory control: transgenic approaches.

Data supporting the hypothesis that dopamine-2 receptors (D(2)-R) contribute to time-dependent changes in the hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR) during acclimatization to hypoxia are briefly reviewed. Previous experiments with transgenic animals (D(2)-R 'knockout' mice) support this hypothesis (J. Appl. Physiol. 89 (2000) 1142). However, those experiments could not determine (1) if D(2)-R in the carotid body, the CNS, or both were involved, or (2) if D(2)-R were necessary during the acclimatization to hypoxia versus some time prior to chronic hypoxia, e.g. during a critical period of developme

Glutamic oxalacetic and glutamic pyruvic transaminase activities in different tissues of rats and guinea pigs exposed to varying levels of altitude stress for different periods of time.

It was observed that both glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) activities were significantly increased in different tissues of both rats and guinea pigs, during a short period of altitude exposure, as well as in acclimatized animals. Interestingly, it was found that oral administration of glucose showed no such significant change at either sea level or in a hypoxic condition. Studies on the activity of GOT and GPT in different tissues of normal guinea pigs showed a little change in liver and brain during short periods of exposure. Kidney and heart show

Proposal for defining the severity of environmental hypoxia.

Every day, millions of people are exposed to environmental hypoxia, primarily due to living at or travelling to high altitudes for reasons such as work, tourism, business, or sports, e.g., mountaineering. Furthermore, hypoxic exposure at low altitudes (e.g., in hypoxia rooms or tents) is increasingly being used to pre-acclimatize individuals to high altitudes for activities such as athletic training, trekking and high-altitude climbing, as well as for preventive and therapeutic purposes. Especially for these applications a clear definition of environmental hypoxia severity is lacking, impeding
