The Influence of Religion, Country of Origin, and United States Acculturation on Stress Coping Techniques in a Spanish-Speaking Free Clinic Population.

IntroductionMany Spanish-speaking individuals in the United States experience high levels of stress but disproportionately underutilize mental health services due to cultural, socioeconomic, and religious barriers in accessing culturally relevant mental health care.MethodsCross-sectional survey of Spanish-speaking adults to assess demographics, religious beliefs, and stress-coping preferences.ResultsOf 100 participants, 90% of participants identified as religious, with 75% reporting moderate to high religious influence on daily life. Higher religious influence correlated with a broader range o

An examination of the relationships between acculturative stress, perceived discrimination, and eating disorder symptoms among ethnic minority college students.

Empirical evidence suggests the importance of considering acculturative stress and perceived discrimination in understanding the mental health of ethnic minority groups, including their eating behaviors and associated psychopathology. The current study examined the effect of acculturative stress and perceived discrimination on eating disorder symptoms among ethnic minority undergraduate students. A total of 187 ethnic minority undergraduate students (41.2% men) completed this cross-sectional study by completing self-report questionnaires on a secure online system. Regression analyses revealed

Assessment of Perceived Stress Related to Migration and Acculturation in Patients with Psychiatric Disorders (MIGSTR10)-Development, Reliability, and Dimensionality of a Brief Instrument.

Assessment of stressors related to migration and acculturation in patients with psychiatric disorder and migration background could help improve culturally sensitive concepts of psychiatry and psychotherapy for diagnosis and treatment. The present overview delineates development and psychometric properties of an instrument (MIGSTR10) for assessment of stressors related to migration and acculturation, particularly for application in patients with psychiatric disorders. Ten migration-related stressors were derived from a qualitative content analysis of case histories of patients with psychiatric

Moderated mediation regarding the sun-safe behaviors of U.S. Latinos: advancing the theory and evidence for acculturation-focused research and interventions.

Recent studies revealed a negative association between acculturation and sun-safe behaviors, possibly mediated by education level, health status, and social networks. We sought to elucidate this relationship by exploring the moderating effects of gender and health insurance on each mediated path. We used data from 496 Latino respondents to the 2005 Health Information National Trends Survey. Acculturation, assessed by a four-item index, was the primary predictor; use of sunscreen and protective clothing were the primary outcomes, assessed by frequency scales. Moderated mediation was tested with

Exploring acculturative stress and coping mechanisms among pregnant South Asian immigrants in Ontario, Canada: A qualitative study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Canada's South Asian immigrant population has grown by 154% over the past two decades, making it the largest visible minority group in the country. Many Pregnant South Asian Immigrants (PSAIs) have unique reproductive well-being needs and face challenges adapting to new cultural and social contexts. Despite support from agencies like the Council of Agencies Serving South Asians (CASSA), PSAIs encounter cultural differences, language barriers, limited social support, financial uncertainties, and restricted access to culturally responsive resources. These factors increase acculturati

Understanding the role of age and U.S. acculturation factors on the relationship between allostatic load and cancer mortality risk in Hispanic Americans.

PURPOSE: Despite growing recognition of stress-related health inequities, the role of nativity and acculturation in shaping the relationship between chronic stress and cancer outcomes among Hispanic populations remains poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to examine whether nativity factors (United States (US) citizenship status and length of time residing in the US modify the association between allostatic load (AL), a measure of chronic physiologic stress, and cancer mortality among Hispanic adults. METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort analysis using data from the National

Language Acculturation, Group Relations, and Satisfaction With Life: A Case of First-Generation Immigrants From the Former Soviet Union in Israel.

This study investigates the connections between language acculturation, group relations, and life satisfaction among first-generation immigrants from the former Soviet Union in Israel. We operationalised language acculturation as using the native (Russian) and the new (Hebrew) languages in everyday life outside of work (communicating with relatives and friends, reading, using the internet, and watching movies). We included positive (social support from immigrants and the majority) and negative (discrimination) aspects of group relations in the model. The study used a stratified sample (n = 848

The role of acculturative stress and self-construal in maladaptive eating behaviors among female young adults in diverse college settings.

UNLABELLED: The increasing cultural diversity in the United States means more college students identify with racial and ethnic minority backgrounds and may experience acculturative stress. Emerging research has found an association between acculturative stress and maladaptive eating. However, these studies rarely consider other theoretical factors or confounders, and individual differences. Thus, the unique contribution of acculturative stress and the generalizability of previous findings remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study investigated the role of acculturative stress and s

The Role of Inflammation and Psycho-Behavioral Factors as Mediators Between Acculturation and Time to Incident Dementia Among Older Mexican Americans.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms through which acculturation influences the onset of cognitive impairment and dementia are not well understood, especially among older Hispanics. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether inflammation and psycho-behavioral factors mediate the relationship between acculturation and incident dementia among older Mexican Americans. METHODS: We analyzed the Sacramento Area Latino Study on Aging (1998-2007, SALSA), a longitudinal study (N = 1,194) with 10 years of follow-up, and used g-computation for mediation analysis with pooled logistic regression to evaluate whether accultu

The role of acculturation in the accuracy of type 2 diabetes risk perception: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011-2016.

OBJECTIVE: High rates of undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) necessitate additional efforts to increase risk awareness, particularly among marginalized and immigrant populations. We examined the association of acculturation with the likelihood of accurate perception of T2DM risk in a large nationally representative sample of adults at risk for T2DM. METHOD: Participants were 5,034 adults, M (SD) age: 53 (23) years, 48% female. Acculturation was operationalized as length of time in the United States, and whether participants predominantly spoke English or their native language at home.

Longitudinal associations between marianismo beliefs and acculturative stress among Latina immigrants during initial years in the United States.

Acculturative stress is commonly experienced among Latinx immigrants in the United States who may feel pressured to maintain their heritage cultural norms and beliefs and/or adopt norms and beliefs of the dominant culture. The present study examined longitudinal relations between acculturative stress and endorsement of traditional Latina gender role beliefs (i.e., marianismo). We determined strength of the relations and temporal precedence of acculturative stress and endorsement of marianismo across 3 time points during participants' initial 3 years in the United States using a random intercep

Contributions of individual acculturation and neighborhood ethnic density to variations in Hispanic children's respiratory health in a US-Mexican border metropolis.

BACKGROUND: We used an expanded conceptualization of ethnic density at the neighborhood level, tailored to Hispanic majority communities in the USA, and a robust measure of children's acculturation at the individual level, to predict Hispanic children's respiratory health. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 1904 children in 2012 in El Paso, TX, USA. One thousand one hundred and seven Hispanic children nested within 72 census tracts were analyzed. Multilevel logistic regression models with cross-level interactions were used to predict bronchitis, asthma and wheezing during sleep

Associations between nocturnal blood pressure dipping and the metabolic syndrome in high- vs. low-acculturated Mexican American women.

BACKGROUND: Less nocturnal blood pressure (BP) dipping has been associated with greater odds for the metabolic syndrome (MetS), a constellation of risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Little work has examined this association in Hispanics, who have elevated rates of MetS, or investigated differences in this relationship by level of acculturation. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between BP dipping and MetS in Hispanic women and to determine if this association is moderated by acculturation status. METHODS: Two hundred eighty-six Mexican American w

Association between acculturation and childhood vaccination coverage in migrant populations: a population based study from a rural region in Bavaria, Germany.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of our analysis was to investigate the association between acculturation and the vaccination coverage among pre-school children. METHODS: We performed a study of vaccination status for measles-mumps-rubella and hepatitis B among pre-school children, during mandatory school entry examinations, in a district of Bavaria, Germany, in 2004 and 2005 (N = 2,043). Prior to the examinations, parents were asked to fill out a self-administered questionnaire assessing socio-demographic information, including variables related to migration background (response rate 73%, N = 1,481). Acculturative stress and mental health among international students in Germany: the protective roles of mindfulness, optimism, self-efficacy and coping strategies.

BACKGROUND: Germany is a popular destination for international students. However, little is known about their mental health issues. Further, there is limited research in European countries investigating risk and protective factors for acculturative stress and mental health issues among international student samples. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of depression, anxiety and acculturative stress among international students in Germany. Further, we examined the association of possible protective and risk factors with these outcome variables. METHODS: A total of 327 international s

Acculturation and its impact on the oral health status of Pacific children in New Zealand: findings from the Pacific Islands Families study.

OBJECTIVES: Immigration and acculturation are increasingly recognized as important explanatory factors for health disparities, although their impact on oral health is less well understood. This study investigates the relationship between Pacific children's cultural orientation and oral health, after adjusting for potentially moderating and confounding variables. METHODS: The Pacific Islands Families (PIF) study follows a cohort of Pacific infants born in 2000. PIF study participants' data from their last dental examination were extracted from service records, and matched to the cohort. A bi-d

Alcohol Use Severity Among Hispanic Emerging Adult College Students: Examining Acculturation Stress, Self-Esteem, and Resilience in a Stress and Coping Framework.

Research on acculturation stress and its effects on alcohol-related outcomes among Hispanics has been the subject of many studies. However, these studies are limited because they generally use a single measure of acculturation stress to account for this complex construct, and most studies do not examine demographic factors or coping resources that may moderate the link between acculturation stress and alcohol-related outcomes. Our study examined two distinct components of acculturation stress-the pressure to acculturate and the pressure against acculturation-and their respective associations w

Acculturation and Physical Activity Among South Asian Mother-Daughter Dyads Residing in the United States: Application of the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model.

BACKGROUND: South Asian immigrant women and girls have low physical activity (PA). Little is known about the influence of salient cultural determinants such as acculturation on PA. This knowledge can inform strategies to improve PA in this population. METHODS: We analyzed baseline data from the South Asians Active Together (SAATH) randomized controlled trial which enrolled mother-daughter dyads. US acculturation and Asian acculturation were measured for mothers and daughters separately using the Suinn-Lew Asian Self-Identity Acculturation Scale (higher scores indicate higher acculturation). Including drinking motives in multivariate models of acculturation and drinking behaviors among U.S. Hispanic college students: Does the story stay the same?

OBJECTIVE: Previous research with U.S. Hispanic college students tends to find that higher levels of acculturation are associated with elevated alcohol use and that these effects are likely to be stronger for women than men. It is now important to consider the extent to which these associations remain once theoretically proximal predictors of alcohol use (e.g., drinking motives) are accounted for in multivariate models. Thus, we examined how multiple domains of acculturation were associated with alcohol use, high intensity drinking, and negative alcohol consequences, and whether direct associa
