Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of Tigecycline on Acinetobacter in Burn Patients.

BACKGROUND: Burn infection is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in spite of significant improvements in burn care and treatment. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter spp., Staphylococcus aureus etc. are the commonest isolates in which rapid development of resistance to multiple drugs limits the therapeutic options for infections by Acinetobacter species. Hence, this study was done to find the occurrence of Acinetobacter and to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration of tigecycline against Acinetobacter isolates. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in Phect-Nepal H

Acute blindness in a dog with Acinetobacter-associated postencephalitic hydrocephalus.

A 10-month-old male Welsh Corgi with a history of acute blindness underwent neuro-ophthalmological testing and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Vision testing revealed complete visual deficits but the electroretinograph and pupillary light reflex were normal in both eyes. The motor and sensory functions of the eyelids and eyes were also normal. The MRI revealed compression of the optic chiasm caused by severe ventriculomegaly in the lateral and third ventricles. Such lesions are associated with inflammatory stenotic lesions in the mesencephalic aqueduct. Moderate neutrophilic pleocytosis was

New molecules and adjuvants in the treatment of infections by Acinetobacter baumannii.

INTRODUCTION: The current problems of the treatment of infections by Acinetobacter baumannii are linked with the increase of multidrug- and extensive-drug resistance and the lack of development of new antimicrobial drugs for Gram-negative bacilli. For these reasons, new alternatives for the treatment and control of severe infections by A. baumannii are necessary. Several studies have reported the effect of adjuvants to restore the efficacy of existing antimicrobial agents. AREAS COVERED: In the present review, the authors describe the main results in the development of adjuvant drugs as well

Proteomic characterization of Nα- and Nε-acetylation in Acinetobacter baumannii.

UNLABELLED: Nα- and Nε-acetylation represent a pivotal post-translational modification used by both eukaryotes and prokaryotes to modulate diverse biological processes. Acinetobacter baumannii has been described as an important nosocomial pathogen for the past 30 years, frequently involved in ventilator-associated pneumonia, bloodstream and urinary tract infections. Many aspects of the biology of A. baumannii remain elusive, in particular the extent and function of N-acetylation. We investigated here N-acetylation in A. baumannii strain ATCC 17978 by proteomic analysis, and we showed the usefu

A comparative study of class 1 integrons in Acinetobacter baumannii.

Multidrug resistance (MDR) in Acinetobacter baumannii is increasingly reported and has become a significant public concern. The method responsible for the acquisition of resistance genes via integrons from the environment or intra-species in A. baumannii remains to be understood. This study was performed to investigate the transmission route of these integrons using a comparative analysis of published A. baumannii complete genomes. The phylogenetic analysis of A. baumannii type 1 integrases (IntI1) showed that the integrons could be transferred across the two evolutionary lineages, the interna

The complete genome and phenome of a community-acquired Acinetobacter baumannii.

Many sequenced strains of Acinetobacter baumannii are established nosocomial pathogens capable of resistance to multiple antimicrobials. Community-acquired A. baumannii in contrast, comprise a minor proportion of all A. baumannii infections and are highly susceptible to antimicrobial treatment. However, these infections also present acute clinical manifestations associated with high reported rates of mortality. We report the complete 3.70 Mbp genome of A. baumannii D1279779, previously isolated from the bacteraemic infection of an Indigenous Australian; this strain represents the first communi

Role of integrons in antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of Acinetobacter baumannii.

The relationship between the presence and types of integrons and the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of Acinetobacter baumannii was investigated. A total of 134 non-duplicated A. baumannii isolates, 54.5% (n=73) of which were subsequently found to carry class 1 integrons, were collected from a regional hospital in Taiwan between March and September 2007. Only two types of gene cassette array, aacA4-catB8-aadA1 and aacC1-orfP-orfP-orfQ-aadA1, were identified. Susceptibility data showed that those strains carrying integrons were significantly more resistant to all antibiotics tested except

Emerging species in pediatrics: a case of Acinetobacter johnsonii meningitis.

BACKGROUND: Among the microorganisms corresponding to the genus Acinetobacter, Acinetobacter johnsonii is a species of low epidemiological incidence compared to Acinetobacter baumannii. However, it has a comparable infectious capacity since it can be involved in severe diseases like bacteremia or meningitis. Its habitat is variable, usually found in humid tropical climates (as is the case in Colombia), soil, water, or animal reservoirs. It is still an unknown germ for most health personnel, as there are not many reported cases, and information about its microbiological and epidemiological char

The Involvement of the csy1 Gene in the Antimicrobial Resistance of Acinetobacter baumannii.

Acinetobacter baumannii is an important, opportunistic nosocomial pathogen that causes a variety of nosocomial infections, and whose drug resistance rate has increased in recent years. The CRISPR-Cas system exists in several bacteria, providing adaptive immunity to foreign nucleic acid invasion. This study explores whether CRISPR-Cas is related to drug resistance. Antibiotics were used to treat strains ATCC19606 and AB43, and the expression of CRISPR-related genes was found to be changed. The Csy proteins (Csy1-4) were previously detected to promote target recognition; however, the potential f

Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii: in pursuit of an effective treatment.

BACKGROUND: Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) has gained global notoriety as a critically important nosocomial pathogen. It mostly affects debilitated patients, causing pneumonia and bloodstream infections with high mortality rates. Difficulties in treating CRAB infections stem from a formidable resistance profile that leaves available only a few antibiotics of uncertain efficacy such as colistin and tigecycline. Despite the relentless attempts to improve therapeutic approaches (as depicted in colistin-oriented randomized clinical trials and the numerous observational studies

Miltefosine Reduces the Cytolytic Activity and Virulence of Acinetobacter baumannii.

Stagnation in antimicrobial development has led to a serious threat to public health because some Acinetobacter baumannii infections have become untreatable. New therapeutics with alternative mechanisms of action to combat A. baumannii are therefore necessary to treat these infections. To this end, the virulence of A. baumannii isolates with various antimicrobial susceptibilities was assessed when the isolates were treated with miltefosine, a phospholipase C inhibitor. Phospholipase C activity is a contributor to A. baumannii virulence associated with hemolysis, cytolysis of A549 human alveola

[Epidemiology and clinical features of Acinetobacter baumannii infections in humans].

Over the past 30 years, Acinetobacter (A.) baumannii has been increasingly recognized as an important human pathogen. In contrast to the "non-baumannii" Acinetobacter spp. which rarely cause diseases in humans, the members of the A. baumannii-group (A. baumannii, A. pittii and A. nosocomialis) are important nosocomial pathogens. A. baumannii itself has been implicated as a causative agent in various severe infections such as bloodstream infections, pneumonia, or meningitis, mainly in immunocompromised patients in the intensive care unit setting. The combination of intrinsic and increasing acqu

Emergence of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii in hospitals in Pakistan.

The emergence of pan-resistance in bacterial pathogens poses a threat to human health. Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged as a serious challenge, causing nosocomial infection and community-acquired outbreaks in hospitals globally, including in Pakistan. We collected 90 Acinetobacter isolates from patients with secondary or nosocomial infections from different hospitals in Pakistan and screened for carbapenem-resistant strains. Of the 90 isolates, 59 were resistant to carbapenems. Among oxacillinase -encoding genes, blaOXA-51-like was common in all isolates, including in c

Morphine, but not trauma, sensitizes to systemic Acinetobacter baumannii infection.

Acinetobacter baumannii is an important nosocomial pathogen in civilian intensive care units. Recently the incidence has increased in wounded military personnel. Morphine is documented in numerous animal studies to be immunosuppressive and to sensitize to infection. The hypotheses were tested that morphine, administered for analgesia in the battlefield, predisposes to Acinetobacter infection, and that the opioid may have an additive or synergistic effect with trauma. To test these hypotheses, an intraperitoneal infection model was established in mice using several Acinetobacter strains. Morphi
