The cepstral spectral index of dysphonia, the acoustic voice quality index and the acoustic breathiness index as novel multiparametric indices for acoustic assessment of voice quality.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The objective assessment of voice quality using acoustic measures is an important pillar of voice diagnostics. This article reviews three recent acoustic measures and their clinical use in phoniatrics and laryngology. RECENT FINDINGS: Two acoustic parameters, the cepstral spectral index of dysphonia (CSID) and the acoustic voice quality index (AVQI), have gained importance as validated multiparametric indices in the objective assessment of hoarseness because they include both continuous speech and sustained vowels. The acoustic breathiness index (ABI), another multiparametr

Acoustic reflex detection using wide-band acoustic reflectance, admittance, and power measurements.

The measurement of the acoustic reflex threshold is a basic component of the diagnostic audiological test battery that may subject patients to potentially harmful sound pressures. A wide-band acoustic impedance and reflectance system (D. H. Keefe, R. Ling, & J. C. Bulen, 1992) was investigated as a means of obtaining reflex thresholds at a reduced level and as a means of providing a more complete characterization of the reflex than current clinical methods provide. Reflex thresholds obtained by measuring changes in wide-band admittance, reflectance, and power were at least 8 dB lower than thos

MR imaging of the acoustic nerves and small acoustic neuromas at 0.6 T: prospective study.

To evaluate the capability of magnetic resonance (MR) in imaging normal acoustic nerves, 12 volunteers without signs or symptoms of intracranial disease were examined using a 0.6 T superconductive system. Several spin-echo (SE) pulse sequences were tested to identify the optimal sequence for demonstration of the acoustic nerve bundle. Repetition times (TRs) varied from 300 to 2000 msec and echo times (TEs) from 30 to 120 msec. A single-slice technique was used with 5 and 8 mm sections, one or two data acquisitions per projection, and axial and coronal imaging. The normal acoustic nerves were d

Integrating 3-D thermal videography, ultrasonic acoustics, and weather radar to characterize bird and bat activity at wind turbines.

Wind turbines intersect airspace used by both migratory birds and bats, yet most monitoring approaches rely on single sensing modalities that capture only part of this system. Here, we integrate synchronized three-dimensional (3-D) thermal videography, ultrasonic acoustic monitoring, and regional weather radar data to characterize wildlife activity at two inland wind turbines during fall migration in Iowa, USA. Across 38 nights in late summer and autumn of 2022, we recorded 12,047 3-D flight tracks within rotor-swept altitudes, 2,249 bat echolocation sequences, and cumulative radar-derived mig

Investigating the Interplay of Thermal, Lighting, and Acoustics in Intensive Care for Enhanced Patient Well-being and Clinical Outcomes.

This research explores the interplay among noise levels, thermal conditions, and lighting intensity in an intensive care unit (ICU), focusing on preserving circadian rhythm and promoting nighttime sleep to advance patient-centric care. This investigation assesses lighting levels (Lux), natural versus artificial light ratios, ICU room temperature, and correlations with acoustic data during a field research period and examines the collective impact of patient exposure to sleep linked to delirium and health outcomes, addressing critical gaps in understanding. Findings reveal that noise levels bet

The Impact of Vocal Task on Voice Acoustics, Effort and Discomfort Following Submandibular Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation in Healthy Adults.

BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) offers a potential adjuvant to traditional voice therapy for individuals with dysphonia. The type of vocal task to implement in conjunction with electrical stimulation to achieve maximal therapeutic benefit is unknown. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the impact of tasks on voice outcomes. METHODS: Nineteen vocally-healthy adult females, between 23 and 27 years of age (Ave: 23.8, SD: 1.13), participated in the study. 15 participants completed all three 30-minute sessions, and four completed at least one session. NMES was paired

The longer, the better? Investigating the effect of prolonged acoustic stimulation on brief acoustic tinnitus suppression.

BACKGROUND: Brief acoustic tinnitus suppression following sound stimulation is being studied to better understand the mechanisms underlying tinnitus and short-term suppression of the tinnitus perception. In this context, several kinds of filtered or modulated stimuli have been investigated. However, little research was conducted regarding the effect of stimulation length for brief acoustic tinnitus suppression. METHODS: The aim of the present study was to compare the extent of tinnitus suppression after a 20-minute and a 3-minute acoustic stimulation with an individual best stimulus. Three ex

Validation of the Acoustic Voice Quality Index Version 03.01 and Acoustic Breathiness Index in German.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to validate the acoustic voice quality index (AVQI) version 03.01 and the acoustic breathiness index (ABI) in the German language. METHODS: Concatenated voice samples of continuous speech (cs) and sustained vowel (sv) [a:] from 175 subjects with dysphonia and 43 vocally healthy subjects were perceptually judged for overall voice quality and breathiness severity. First, to reach a higher level of ecological validity, the proportions of cs and sv were equalized regarding the time length. Second, concurrent validity and diagnostic accuracy were statistically

Development of the acoustic startle response in rats and its change after early acoustic trauma.

Even brief acoustic trauma during the critical period of development that results in no permanent hearing threshold shift may lead to altered auditory processing in adulthood. By monitoring the acoustic startle response (ASR), we examined the development of auditory function in control rats and in rats exposed to intense noise at the 14th postnatal day (P14). First ASRs appeared on P10-P11 to intense low-frequency tones. By P14, the range of sound intensities and frequencies eliciting ASRs extended considerably, the ASR reactivity being similar at all frequencies (4-32 kHz). During the subsequ

Acoustic phenotypes for speech-genetics studies: toward an acoustic marker for residual /s/ distortions.

Findings in a prior study series indicate that acoustic markers may have the requisite sensitivity and specificity to discriminate speakers with histories of several types of speech disorders, one of which is posited to be genetically inherited. The present study in this series compares acoustic data from three groups of adolescent speakers. Group 1 speakers had residual dentalized /s/ distortions in conversational speech and histories of significant age-inappropriate deletion and substitution errors. Group 2 speakers also had residual dentalized /s/ distortions in conversational speech, but t

Acoustic reflex test in neuro-otologic diagnosis. A review of 24 cases of acoustic tumors.

Acoustic and other tumors of the cerebellopontine angle are not uncommon, and they usually have otologic symptoms or findings. Early diagnosis depends on a high index of suspicion and a thorough evaluation of patients with suspected tumors. This is a report of 24 cases selected from a group of 184 surgically confirmed tumors. Had the cases been evaluated only on the basis of pure tone or speech audiometry or on the basis of plain roentgenograms, the diagnosis might not have been made. Audiological examination should include the acoustic reflex test. The results of this test indicated a retroco

Acoustic Manipulation for Jetting Printing.

Jetting printing is widely used in electronics, biomedicine and other advanced manufacturing fields, yet jetting trajectory divergence severely impairs its printing resolution and deposition efficiency. Here, we propose a non-contact acoustic manipulation strategy for jetting trajectory regulation based on a hemispherical ultrasonic phased array. A dual-focus acoustic field is constructed via phase modulation of the transducer elements within the array, and the acoustic radiation force generated by this field is utilized to suppress the divergent motion of in-flight droplets. The acoustic fiel

[To the origins of surgery for acoustic neuromas].

Acoustic neuroma is one of the most common tumors of the posterior cranial fossa. Its removal is always a challenge for the neurosurgeon and the patient. The history of surgery for acoustic neuromas is inextricably linked with the history of neurosurgery in general. The modern surgical community must know history and be able to use it. Only then will the development of surgery lead to the preservation of the quality of life of patients. In the history of surgery for acoustic neuromas, the stages of its development are clearly visible from the description of the clinical picture through the stu

Wideband Acoustic Immittance in Children.

As wideband absorbance (WBA) gains popularity, it is essential to understand the impact of different middle ear pathologies on the absorbance patterns as a function of frequency in children with various middle ear pathologies. More recently, the use of wideband tympanometry has enabled clinicians to conduct WBA at ambient pressure (WBA amb ) as well as the pressurized mode (WBA TPP ). This article reviews evidence for the ability of WBA measurements to accurately characterize the normal middle ear function across a wide range of frequencies and to aid in differential diagnosis of common middle
