Associations of self-report and actigraphy sleep measures with experimental pain outcomes in patients with temporomandibular disorder and healthy controls.

OBJECTIVE: Discrepancies between self-reported and actigraphy sleep measures are common, producing ambiguity about which are better predictors of experimental pain outcomes. The current study tested if pain intensity during and situational pain catastrophizing following experimental pain were differentially predicted by self-reported or actigraphy sleep measures in patients with chronic temporomandibular disorder (TMJD) or healthy controls (HCs). METHODS: Forty patients with TMJD and 20 HCs completed self-report sleep measures (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, PSQI; Insomnia Severity Index, IS

Interrelations of work with health and wellbeing on a 50+ year old workforce assessed using longitudinal self-reports and actigraphy.

Daily activities, work, and health are closely intertwined. We closely followed 45 participants aged 50-66 years working across different sectors in a year-long study, who completed a range of baseline, weekly, and monthly Participant Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs). Participants self-reported on work-related aspects using the Brief Job Stress Questionnaire (BJSQ) and Workplace Wellbeing Question Bank (WWQB); wellbeing using the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS); and sleep using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Additionally, they provided wrist-worn actigraphy data

Bidirectional associations between daily sleep and pain severity in adults with rheumatoid arthritis: A daily diary and actigraphy study.

Poor sleep and pain are common in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study sought to understand the temporal relationships between multidimensional sleep and pain in daily life among individuals with RA. Participants with RA completed up to four waves of 7-day daily diary and sleep actigraphy spanning two years (n=117, Mean age=58.05 years, 87% female). A sleep health composite captured regularity, satisfaction, alertness, timing, efficiency, and duration. Both individual sleep dimensions and the composite were examined. Average daily pain severity, night pain, morning pain, and morning joint sti

Validation of actigraphy sleep metrics in children aged 8 to 16 years: considerations for device type, placement and algorithms.

BACKGROUND: Actigraphy is often used to measure sleep in pediatric populations, despite little confirmatory evidence of the accuracy of existing sleep/wake algorithms. The aim of this study was to determine the performance of 11 sleep algorithms in relation to overnight polysomnography in children and adolescents. METHODS: One hundred thirty-seven participants aged 8-16 years wore two Actigraph wGT3X-BT (wrist, waist) and three Axivity AX3 (wrist, back, thigh) accelerometers over 24-h. Gold standard measures of sleep were obtained using polysomnography (PSG; Embletta MPRPG, ST + Proxy and TX

Actigraphy-based sleep and activity measurements in intensive care unit patients randomized to ramelteon or placebo for delirium prevention.

Patients in the ICU often sleep poorly for various reasons, which may predispose to delirium. We previously conducted a clinical trial in which we tested the efficacy of ramelteon, a melatonin-receptor agonist used to treat insomnia, versus placebo, in preventing ICU delirium in patients who underwent elective pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE) surgery. Here we examine sleep, activity, and circadian patterns, measured with actigraphy, to understand changes in these metrics with our intervention and in those with and without delirium. Participants wore wrist actigraphy devices while recoveri

Sleep and daytime functioning in children with tourette syndrome: A two-week case-control study with actigraphy and cognitive assessments.

There is increasing recognition of the high prevalence of sleep issues in children with Tourette syndrome (TS), a condition characterised by motor and vocal tics. Overnight polysomnography (PSG) has been the primary mode of sleep assessment in the TS literature, despite the extensive use of actigraphy in other neurodevelopmental populations. As a result, there are existing research gaps surrounding day-to-day variability of sleep in TS and links to daytime functioning. This study adopts a naturalistic, intensive longitudinal design to examine sleep in children with TS while considering potenti

Applicability of Actigraphy for Assessing Sleep Behaviour in Children with Palliative Care Needs Benchmarked against the Gold Standard Polysomnography.

In children with life-limiting conditions and severe neurological impairment receiving pediatric palliative care (PPC), the degree to which actigraphy generates meaningful sleep data is uncertain. Benchmarked against the gold standard polysomnography (PSG), the applicability of actigraphy in this complex population was to be assessed. An actigraph was placed on N = 8 PPC patients during one-night polysomnography measurement in a pediatric tertiary care hospital's sleep laboratory. Patient characteristics, sleep phase data, and respiratory abnormalities are presented descriptively. Bland-Altman

Toward a Digital Future in Bipolar Disorder Assessment: A Systematic Review of Disruptions in the Rest-Activity Cycle as Measured by Actigraphy.

BACKGROUND: Disruptions in rest and activity patterns are core features of bipolar disorder (BD). However, previous methods have been limited in fully characterizing the patterns. There is still a need to capture dysfunction in daily activity as well as rest patterns in order to more holistically understand the nature of 24-h rhythms in BD. Recent developments in the standardization, processing, and analyses of wearable digital actigraphy devices are advancing longitudinal investigation of rest-activity patterns in real time. The current systematic review aimed to summarize the literature on a

Predicting prosthesis use and mobility needs in lower limb amputees: a machine learning approach using clinical and actigraphy data.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in prosthetic technology, many individuals with lower limb amputation (LLA) fall short of achieving their full functional potential. The Medicare Functional Classification Level (K-level) system remains a standard for guiding prosthetic prescriptions; however, it has historically reflected anticipated mobility potential rather than actual performance in daily life. Similarly, standardized clinical assessments provide only episodic snapshots and are limited in their ability to determine whether individuals will meet their real-world mobility goals. Consequently, the

Association between wrist-worn actigraphy and the MDS-UPDRS Parkinson's disease rating scale through machine learning: an exploratory study.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is typically assessed during short clinical visits using rating scales such as the Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS). These assessments provide only a snapshot of symptom severity and may not capture fluctuations in daily life. In this study, we examined whether wrist-worn actigraphy can be used to estimate MDS-UPDRS scores in people with Parkinson's disease (PwP). METHODS: Continuous accelerometer recordings at 25 Hz were collected over up to 28 days using GeneActiv devices. From these recordings, three featu

Effects of time-restricted eating on actigraphy-derived sleep parameters: post hoc analysis of a randomized, isocaloric feeding study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Time-restricted eating (TRE) is a novel dietary intervention targeting weight loss and cardiometabolic risk factors. The impact of TRE on sleep patterns remains under-explored. METHODS: This was a post hoc analysis of a parallel-arm, controlled feeding trial in 41 adults with obesity and prediabetes/diabetes, randomized to TRE (08:00 am-06:00 pm) or usual eating pattern (UEP; 08:00 am-12:00 am) for 12 weeks. We objectively determined sleep-wake patterns from 7-day wrist actigraphy data obtained at baseline and week 12. From this data, we derived total sleep time (TST) and sl

Patients with chronic cluster headache may show reduced activity energy expenditure on ambulatory wrist actigraphy recordings during daytime attacks.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes in activity energy expenditure (AEE) throughout daytime cluster headache (CH) attacks in patients with chronic CH and to evaluate the usefulness of actigraphy as a digital biomarker of CH attacks. BACKGROUND: CH is a primary headache disorder characterized by attacks of severe to very severe unilateral pain (orbital, supraorbital, temporal, or in any combination of these sites), with ipsilateral cranial autonomic symptoms and/or a sense of restlessness or agitation. We hypothesized increased AEE from hyperactivity during attacks measured by actigraphy. M

The Association Between Actigraphy-Derived Behavioral Clusters and Self-Reported Fatigue in Persons With Multiple Sclerosis: Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Persons with multiple sclerosis frequently report increased levels of fatigue and fatigability. However, behavioral surrogates that are strongly associated with self-reports are lacking, which limits research and treatment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to derive distinct behavioral syndromes that are reflected by self-reports concerning fatigue and fatigability. METHODS: We collected actigraphic data of 30 persons with multiple sclerosis over a period of 1 week during an inpatient stay at a neurorehabilitation facility. Further, participants completed the German fatigue s

Childhood paternal abuse and low paternal affection predict adult panic symptoms 18 years later via actigraphy-indexed sleep disruptions.

BACKGROUND: Child abuse and low parental affection are established risk factors for higher adulthood panic disorder (PD) severity, but their plausible sleep mediators are under-investigated. We thus examined how actigraphy indices mediated the links between child parental abuse and affection deficits to adulthood PD severity. METHODS: Community-dwelling adult participants (N = 1,054) completed a series of self-reports on child parental abuse and affection at Wave 1. An eight-day actigraphy protocol was conducted at Wave 2, 9 years later. Telephone-administered clinical interviews assessing PD

Actigraphy-measured sleep concordance, night-wakings, intraindividual sleep variability in parents and their children-Associations with childhood sleep disturbances.

The relationship between the sleep of parents and their children has primarily been studied using self-reported measures, but data using objective sleep assessments are limited. In particular, objective assessments of sleep disturbance and night-wakings in parents in relation to their children's night-wakings is underexamined. This pilot study employed actigraphy to determine concordance in sleep-wake patterns between parents and their children, and examine temporal links between their wakings lasting five min or longer. The study also explored individual variability in parents' sleep based on
