Effects of acetazolamide on transient K+ currents and action potentials in nodose ganglion neurons of adult rats.

The aim of the present study was to determine whether acetazolamide (AZ) contributes to the inhibition of the fast inactivating transient K(+) current (I(A) ) in adult rat nodose ganglion (NG) neurons. We have previously shown that pretreatment with either AZ or 4-AP attenuated or blocked the CO(2) -induced inhibition of slowly adapting pulmonary stretch receptors in in vivo experiments. The patch-clamp experiments were performed by using the isolated NG neurons. In addition to this, the RT-PCR of mRNA and the expression of voltage-gated K(+) (Kv) 1.4, Kv 4.1, Kv 4.2, and Kv 4.3 channel protei

High concentrations of dexmedetomidine inhibit compound action potentials in frog sciatic nerves without alpha(2) adrenoceptor activation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Dexmedetomidine, an alpha(2)-adrenoceptor agonist, exhibits anti-nociceptive actions at the spinal cord and enhances the effect of local anaesthetics in the peripheral nervous system. Although the latter action may be attributed in part to inhibition of nerve conduction produced by dexmedetomidine, this has not been fully examined yet. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: We examined the effects of various adrenoceptor agonists including dexmedetomidine, and tetracaine, a local anaesthetic, on compound action potentials (CAPs) recorded from the frog sciatic nerve, using the air-gap

A comparison of efferent suppression of compound action potentials by simultaneous and non-simultaneous contralateral noise paradigms.

The intent of this study was to compare the effectiveness of continuous versus gated contralateral noise in producing efferent suppression of CAPs in guinea pigs. The average contralateral suppression was 2.0 dB when using gated noise, with ipsilateral tone-pip rates of 2 s(-1), and 1.4 dB when using continuous noise at an ipsilateral tone-pip rate of 31 s(-1). When the ipsilateral tone-pip rate employed in the simultaneous paradigm with continuous noise was reduced to 2 s(-1), a rate equivalent to that employed in the non-simultaneous paradigm, the average attenuation was 2.1 dB, a magnitude

[The effects of muscarinic and nicotinic receptor antagonists on compound action potentials in the cochleae of gerbils].

To explore the mechanism of the medial olivocochlear(MOC) efferents and their neurotransmitter acetylcholine in regulating the cochlear mechanics and the auditory afferent activities, the effects of contralateral noise(CLN) and muscarinic(M) and nicotinic(N) receptor antagonist on the compound action potential(CAP) of the cochleae of gerbils were observed in our studies. The results showed that the CAP was significantly inhibited by CLN, and the suppressive effect of CLN on CAP was eliminated either by atropine or by gentamycin. These results support that MOC efferents play their physiological

Direct cochlear nerve action potentials as an aid to hearing preservation in middle fossa acoustic neuroma resection.

A new application of auditory evoked potentials using direct cochlear nerve action potentials (CNAPs) for monitoring middle fossa acoustic neuroma resection with attempted hearing preservation is described. Twenty patients have been studied to date. With this technique, a monitoring electrode is secured between the floor of the internal auditory canal and the dura adjacent to the cochlear nerve in an extradural location. Standard auditory evoked potential techniques with click stimuli and microelectrical recording allow observation of nearfield waveforms in seconds versus several minutes requi

[Effects of Bunaphtine on right atrial and ventricular monophasic action potentials in man. Preliminary note (author's transl)].

Effects of Bunaphtine on right atrial and ventricular monophasic action potentials were investigated in 6 patients using the technique of endocavitary recording with a suction electrode. The authors found that the drug, given intravenously in the usual therapeutic dosages, increases the total duration of MAP both atrial and ventricular, together with quite a proportional ERP prolongation. At ventricular level MAP's increase in correlated to a prevailing and strong increase of phase 3. However, the variations of the MAP's amplitude, its O dv/dt phase and the cardiac specific conduction's altera

A relationship between Eysenck's P scale and change in muscle action potentials with attention to perceptual tasks.

An experiment is described in which an index of change in muscle tension produced by perceptual discrimination tasks, and scores on Eysenck's PEN scales, were measured on 39 university students. It was hypothesized that if P is an index of psychoticism, as has been claimed (Eysenck & Eysenck, 1968) then an index of one central feature of so called 'psychotics', namely attention difficulty while decision making, should correlate positively with P. P was found to correlate significantly with a measure of increase of EMG on the perceptual discrimination tasks (r = 0-54, P less than 0-001). Correl

Comparison of median and ulnar sensory nerve action potentials in the diagnosis of the carpal tunnel syndrome.

Recording of median and ulnar digital sensory nerve action potentials in normal subjects showed that the ratio of the median (index finger) to ulnar (little finger) potential amplitude was consistently greater than one. In 15 patients with the carpal tunnel syndrome (seven bilateral) this ratio was found to be less than one for all but two of the 22 clinically affected hands, including three of the four hands with a normal motor latency to threshold stimulation and four of the five hands with a normal sensory conduction. It is concluded that the estimation of the ratio of the median to ulnar s

Summating potential-action potential waveform amplitude and width in the diagnosis of Menière's disease.

OBJECTIVES: It has been suggested that analyzing the width and amplitude of the summating potential-action potential (SP-AP) waveforms can increase the sensitivity of electrocochleography. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ratio of SP to AP amplitude (SP/AP) and SP-AP waveform width, as well as the AP latency difference to condensation and rarefaction clicks, for the diagnosis of Menière's disease. STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective, controlled study. METHODS: We used transtympanic electrocochleography to evaluate 21 patients with definite Menière's disease and 19 normal-hear

Multiplication of Compound Signals in Neural Array Signal Processing Improves Signal Quality and Detectability of Action Potentials.

Electrode arrays along peripheral nerves can record sensory, motor and autonomic signals propagating in afferent and efferent direction at different conduction velocities. To extract this temporal information in a delay-and-sum approach, velocity-selective recording (VSR) utilizes summation to amplify time-aligned action potentials and average out noise. This improved contrast subsequently improves the automated detection and classification of action potentials-an essential prerequisite to interface with the peripheral nervous system. In this study, we replaced the summation with multiplicatio

Hyper-parameter tuning and feature extraction for asynchronous action detection from sub-thalamic nucleus local field potentials.

INTRODUCTION: Decoding brain states from subcortical local field potentials (LFPs) indicative of activities such as voluntary movement, tremor, or sleep stages, holds significant potential in treating neurodegenerative disorders and offers new paradigms in brain-computer interface (BCI). Identified states can serve as control signals in coupled human-machine systems, e.g., to regulate deep brain stimulation (DBS) therapy or control prosthetic limbs. However, the behavior, performance, and efficiency of LFP decoders depend on an array of design and calibration settings encapsulated into a singl

Acute effects of cochleostomy and electrode-array insertion on compound action potentials in normal-hearing guinea pigs.

INTRODUCTION: Electrocochleography (ECochG) is increasingly used in cochlear implant (CI) surgery, in order to monitor the effect of insertion of the electrode array aiming to preserve residual hearing. However, obtained results are often difficult to interpret. Here we aim to relate changes in ECochG responses to acute trauma induced by different stages of cochlear implantation by performing ECochG at multiple time points during the procedure in normal-hearing guinea pigs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven normal-hearing guinea pigs received a gold-ball electrode that was fixed in the round-wind

Neural mechanisms underlying immediate and final action goals in object use reflected by slow wave brain potentials.

Event-related brain potentials were used to study the neural mechanisms underlying goal-directed object use distinguishing between processes supporting immediate and final action goals during action planning and execution. Subjects performed a grasping and transportation task in which actions were cued either with the immediate action goal (the part of the object to grasp) or with the final action goal of the movement (the end position for transportation). Slow wave potentials dissociated between processes supporting immediate and final goals: reaching for the object was accompanied by the dev

Role of K(+) channels in frequency regulation of spontaneous action potentials in rat pituitary GH(3) cells.

The frequency of spontaneous action potentials (SAP) is important in the regulation of hormone secretion. The decrease in K(+) conductance is known as a primary mechanism for increasing SAP frequency. To investigate the nature of K(+) channels that contribute to the frequency regulation of the SAP in rat clonal pituitary GH(3) cells, the effect of various K(+) channel blockers on the SAP and membrane currents were recorded using the patch-clamp technique. A classical inward rectifying K(+) channel blocker, Cs(+) (5 mM), caused an increase in firing frequency and depolarization in after-hyperpo

Opioid peptides with differential affinity for mu and delta receptors decrease sensory neuron calcium-dependent action potentials.

Previously, it has been reported that opioid peptides decrease the calcium component of action potentials in a dose-dependent and naloxone-reversible manner consistent with mediation by opiate receptors. To clarify the relation of mu and delta opiate receptors to decreases of somatic calcium-dependent action potential duration, we investigated the potency of two opioid peptides which have different affinities for mu and delta opiate receptors, Leu-enkephalin and morphiceptin. We predicted that Leu-enkephalin would be about 1000-fold more potent than morphiceptin on dorsal root ganglion (DRG) n

The action of local anaesthetics on the compound action potential is altered by the nature of the permeant ion in frog nerve.

Compound action potentials were recorded from the isolated frog sciatic nerve using either sodium or lithium as the permeant ion, and an assessment of the action of local anaesthetics was made. The compound action potentials evoked from the nerve were not different in terms of their mean amplitude or time to peak whether recorded with sodium or lithium as the permeant ion. The local anaesthetics tested, procaine, lignocaine and benzocaine, were more potent, as measured by their IC50 values, by 2.3, 2.1 and 1.8 times, respectively, when lithium rather than sodium was used as the permeant ion. Ginsenosides in Liver Fibrosis: Pharmacological Actions and Therapeutic Potential.

Liver fibrosis (LF) represents a critical pathological stage in the progression of various chronic liver diseases, and is characterized by the sustained activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and excessive deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM). These processes ultimately lead to cirrhosis and even hepatocellular carcinoma. Current therapeutic strategies for LF primarily rely on etiological interventions and supportive management. However, due to the complex pathogenesis of LF, involving multiple interconnected signaling pathways, effective and specific antifibrotic therapies remain lac
