Eco-physiological adaptations, metabolomic profiles and genetic diversity across varied habitats in four medicinal plant species.

BACKGROUND: Plants are constantly in need of adapting to different environmental conditions and responses in many ways. The response of plants is different between different species to the same environmental factors. It is therefore important to fulfill more about how plants respond and adapt. This study aimed to analyze four different plant species collected from two different habitats. It focused on examining the responses of these species based on the composition of phytoconstituents, measurements of antioxidant compounds, and the expression level of cellular proteins. RESULTS: Plant respo

Physiological adaptations in early-lactation cows result in differential responses to calcium perturbation relative to nonlactating, nonpregnant cows.

The peripartal cow experiences a rapid change in calcium metabolism at the onset of lactation. Research has focused on understanding how mammary-derived factors, such as serotonin (5HT) and parathyroid hormone like hormone (PTHLH), aid in coordinating these calcemic adaptations to lactation. Therefore, the aim of our study was to determine how induced subclinical hypocalcemia influences physiological responses, specifically the 5HT-PTHLH-Ca axis, in lactating and nonlactating dairy cows to elucidate the potential contribution of the mammary gland. Twelve nonlactating, nonpregnant (NL) multipar

Insights into the physiology and ecology of the brackish-water-adapted Cyanobacterium Nodularia spumigena CCY9414 based on a genome-transcriptome analysis.

Nodularia spumigena is a filamentous diazotrophic cyanobacterium that dominates the annual late summer cyanobacterial blooms in the Baltic Sea. But N. spumigena also is common in brackish water bodies worldwide, suggesting special adaptation allowing it to thrive at moderate salinities. A draft genome analysis of N. spumigena sp. CCY9414 yielded a single scaffold of 5,462,271 nucleotides in length on which genes for 5,294 proteins were annotated. A subsequent strand-specific transcriptome analysis identified more than 6,000 putative transcriptional start sites (TSS). Orphan TSSs located in int

Adaptive physiological speed/flow control of rotary blood pumps in permanent implantation using intrinsic pump parameters.

An adaptive speed/flow controller was developed based on previous work using the intrinsic pump parameters. Those intrinsic parameters were measured by long-term reliable sensors. The adaptive controller was designed to track the varying total peripheral resistance and update the controller parameters correspondingly. The controller was studied in computer simulation on two different types of pumps, whose hydrodynamic characteristics are described by static and dynamic equation, respectively. The pump pressure rise of both pumps is accessible. With the designed adaptive controller, the abnorma

Effects of Time-Based and Distance-Based Repeated Sprint Training on Physical and Physiological Adaptations in Collegiate Basketball Players.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the effects of time-based (TB) and distance-based (DB) repeated-sprint training (RST) on athletic performance adaptations in collegiate basketball players during preseason and to examine whether the 2 training prescriptions produce different levels of homogeneity in the magnitude of individual adaptations. METHODS: Thirty young male basketball players (age = 21.3 [1.4] y) were randomly and equally assigned to 3 groups (n = 10): DB-RST, TB-RST, and an active control group. Participants completed a 7-week RST program performed 3 times per week, consisting of

Dissolved oxygen thresholds drive adaptive functional trait remodeling in mesophytes via anatomical, physiological, and metabolic synergies.

Climate-exacerbated urban waterlogging imposes severe hypoxic stress on mesophytes. However, whether mesophytes possess dissolved oxygen (DO)-driven mechanisms for adaptive structural and physiological remodeling remains poorly understood. We conducted a hydroponic experiment with four representative mesophyte species (Gardenia jasminoides, Murraya paniculata, Ixora chinensis, and Heptapleurum actinophyllum 'Variegata') across four DO gradients (0-2, 2-4, 4-6, and 6-8 mg/L). Plant growth, physiology, and root anatomy were measured, and structural equation modeling (SEM) was applied to disentan

Trade-offs between behavioral plasticity and physiological adaptations in midday gerbils (Meriones meridianus) in response to extreme temperatures.

Climate change is reshaping the thermal environment of Meriones meridianus habitats in the Mu Us Desert in China. However, the trade-off between behavioral plasticity and physiological adaptations in this species when coping with extreme temperatures across seasons remains poorly understood. Here, we measured activity patterns and serum and brown adipose tissue (BAT) metabolite levels in this rodent during summer and autumn, and analyzed their relationships with microhabitat temperatures. Behaviorally, 87.9% of extra-burrow summer activity occurred between 22:00 h and 01:00 h, while autumn act

Adaptive capability of slow-growing backyard poultry as indicated by physiological and molecular responses in a hot and humid coastal climate.

Assessing the adaptability of slow-growing rural chickens for improving thermotolerance to suit the global climate change is a major research need. This work was aimed to evaluate the adaptability of CARI-Debendra chickens and to identify the polymorphism as well as expression profiling of thermotolerant genes (HSP70 and GRP78) under prevailing temperature-humidity indices and thermal stress in a coastal environment. One hundred sixty straight run chicks were reared at THI≥75 (control) and THI>80 under coastal climate till 12 weeks. Polymorphism of HSP70 and GRP78 candidate genes were explored

Chronic ethanol exposure produces long-lasting, subregion-specific physiological adaptations in RMTg-projecting mPFC neurons.

Chronic ethanol exposure produces neuroadaptations in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) that are thought to facilitate maladaptive behaviors that interfere with recovery from alcohol use disorder. Despite evidence that different cortico-subcortical projections play distinct roles in behavior, few studies have examined the physiological effects of chronic ethanol at the circuit level. The rostromedial tegmental nucleus (RMTg) is functionally altered by chronic ethanol exposure. Our recent work identified dense input from the mPFC to the RMTg, yet the effects of chronic ethanol exposure on thi

Time-course for onset and decay of physiological adaptations in endurance trained athletes undertaking prolonged heat acclimation training.

Short-term heat acclimation (HA) appears adequate for maximizing sudomotor adaptations and enhancing thermal resilience in trained athletes. However, for enhanced erythropoiesis and transfer effects to exercise capacity in cooler environments, prolonged HA appears necessary. To establish the time-course for physiological adaptations and performance effects, 20 male elite cyclists were divided into an intervention group (HEAT; n = 10) completing 5 weeks of HA (six one-hour HA-training sessions per week) and control (n = 10) tested pre and post in hot (40°C) and cool conditions (20°C). Nitric oxide biosensor uncovers diminished ferrous iron-dependency of cultured cells adapted to physiological oxygen levels.

Iron is an essential metal for cellular metabolism and signaling, but it has adverse effects in excess. The physiological consequences of iron deficiency are well established, yet the relationship between iron supplementation and pericellular oxygen levels in cultured cells and their downstream effects on metalloproteins has been less explored. This study exploits the metalloprotein geNOps in cultured HEK293T epithelial and EA.hy926 endothelial cells to test the iron-dependency in cells adapted to standard room air (18 kPa O2) or physiological normoxia (5 kPa O2). We show that cells in culture

Physiological adaptations affecting drug pharmacokinetics in space: what do we really know? A critical review of the literature.

As human spaceflight progresses with extended mission durations, the demand for effective and safe drugs will necessarily increase. To date, the accepted medications used during missions (for space motion sickness, sleep disturbances, allergies, pain, and sinus congestion) are administered under the assumption that they act as safely and efficaciously as on Earth. However, physiological changes have been documented in human subjects in spaceflight involving fluid shifts, muscle and bone loss, immune system dysregulation, and adjustments in the gastrointestinal tract and metabolism. These alter

Adaptation to hypocaloric feeding: physiologic significance of the fall in serum T3 as measured by the pulse wave arrival time (QKd).

We have investigated the physiologic significance of the decline in serum triiodothyronine (T3) occurring during hypocaloric feeding by measurement of changes in cardiovascular function. The QKd interval, the interval between the Q wave of the electrocardiogram and the onset of Korotkoff sounds at diastolic pressure at the brachial artery, is the sum of the preejection period and pulsetransmission time, and has proven to be a sensitive and effective measure of the effect of thyroid hormones on the cardiovascular system. Fifteen euthyroid obese volunteers underwent successive 2 wk periods of hy

Multiomics Provide Insights into the Key Molecules and Pathways Involved in the Physiological Adaptation of Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar) to Chemotherapeutic-Induced Oxidative Stress.

Although chemotherapeutics are used to treat infections in farmed fish, knowledge on how they alter host physiology is limited. Here, we elucidated the physiological consequences of repeated exposure to the potent oxidative chemotherapeutic peracetic acid (PAA) in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolts. Fish were exposed to the oxidant for 15 (short exposure) or 30 (long exposure) minutes every 15 days over 45 days. Unexposed fish served as the control. Thereafter, the ability of the remaining fish to handle a secondary stressor was investigated. Periodic chemotherapeutic exposure did not affect

Bone mass decreases in morbidly obese women after long limb-biliopancreatic diversion and marked weight loss without secondary hyperparathyroidism. A physiological adaptation to weight loss?

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of marked weight loss after long limb-biliopancreatic diversion (BPD-LL) on bone mass and serum calcium, 25-OH-vitamin D, and PTH levels in relation to calcium supplementation. BACKGROUND DATA: BPD is the most effective type of bariatric surgery, but it is followed by bone mass loss, mainly attributed to calcium and vitamin D malabsorption leading to secondary hyperparathyroidism. METHODS: Two groups, each consisting of 26 healthy, morbidly obese, premenopausal women, underwent BPD-LL. Both groups received high-calcium diets, 200 IU of vitamin D and 100 m

Physiology-aware latent shift adaptation for sEMG-based hand kinematics decoding across able-bodied and amputee populations.

Objective. Decoding continuous hand kinematics from surface electromyography (sEMG) across able-bodied and amputee populations remains a significant challenge, as amputation induces systematic alterations in neural drive and muscle activation patterns that reshape the generative relationship between motor intentions and observed sEMG signals. Such physiology-driven changes are not explicitly modeled by purely statistical domain alignment approaches, limiting their ability to achieve robust and interpretable cross-population decoding.Approach. We develop an integrated approach, termed physiolog
