Facial paralysis after craniocerebral surgery is a common postoperative complication that not only causes facial motor dysfunction but also triggers a series of psychosocial adaptation problems, severely affecting patients' quality of life. This paper systematically reviews recent domestic and international studies on the psychosocial adaptation of patients with postoperative facial paralysis. It explores the concept, current status, influencing factors, assessment tools, and interventions related to psychosocial adaptation. The purpose is to provide theoretical and practical references for cl

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic growth (PTG), as a positive psychological adaptation mechanism, can significantly enhance patients' psychological resilience and promote positive psychological transformation. However, among lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, fear of progression (FoP) is associated with substantial psychological distress and lower levels of positive adaptation. Research on the association between FoP and PTG in this population remains limited.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between FoP and PTG among lung cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, and to examine w

Resilience-the capacity to adapt, recover, and engage dynamically with adversity-has emerged as a central construct for understanding psychological health. Although meditation offers a promising route for cultivating resilience, current scholarship rarely differentiates between the mechanisms of focused attention meditation (FAM) and open monitoring meditation (OMM), thereby obscuring their distinct contributions to adaptive functioning. This perspective article integrates contemporary resilience theory with cognitive-affective models of meditation to propose the Meditation-Resilience Interact

OBJECTIVES: We sought to characterize psychosocial profiles of adaptation to neurofibromatosis (NF).
METHODS: Participants (N = 224) completed self-report measures of psychosocial functioning, including risk (i.e., perceived stress, depression, anxiety) and resiliency (i.e., gratitude, optimism, coping, social support, mindfulness, empathy). We used a TwoStep hierarchical cluster analysis to determine clusters reflecting adaptation to NF.
RESULTS: The analysis revealed two distinct groups, with the "Low Adaptation" group defined by high emotional distress and low resiliency (n = 130; 57% of

The problem of emotional "burn-out" among health care professionals who work with cancer patients is a significant clinical issue. An interdisciplinary group of these health care service providers participated in a workshop aimed at identifying the major stresses which contribute to emotional "burn-out." While some of these stresses are unavoidable aspects of cancer treatment programs, participants also identified a set of coping strategies which seem helpful in reducing caretaker vulnerability to severe emotional exhaustion in oncology treatment settings.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the relationship among adjustment disorder, emotional intelligence, and mental resilience in newly licensed registered nurses.
METHOD: This study adopts a cross-sectional design to explore the factors influencing work adaptation and mental resilience among newly graduated nurses with <3 years of clinical experience. The research was conducted by distributing a comprehensive, multi-part questionnaire to a targeted sample of new nurses across various healthcare settings. The questionnaire was meticulously designed to capture a holistic view of the participa

1. Continual exposure to work-related stressors compounds nurses' workloads, increases their stress levels, and places increased demands on their abilities to adapt. 2. Nurses need to learn and routinely use coping measures to prevent exhaustion and burnout. 3. An in-house stress management program can help nurses learn to cope with constant exposure to work-related stressors, halt the cyclic process of stress, prevent burnout, and decrease turnover.

The psychological structure was studied in 120 patients with paroxysmal disorders of the cardiac rhythm. Anxiety, obsessive-phobic, neurasthenic and ergopathic syndromes were singled out. It was established that psychological aspects of personality of the patients depended on the course of paroxysmal disorders of the rhythm and influence the number of arrhythmia triggering that often reduced the grade of medicosocial adaptation. Psychological preparation of these patients to laser treatment may be achieved by rational psychotherapy. Details of such psychotherapy are discussed.

Self-care and home dialysis encourages the patient's active participation in his treatment which may enhance coping and adaptation to his illness. The psychological issues of dependence-independence, activity-passivity, and control and mastery are frequently referred to in the literature as being important in understanding the chronic stress of illness and treatment. The measure of successful coping should be determined by adaptive or maladaptive value of behavior rather than traditional concepts of normality or abnormality. Treatment planning and patient selection should be tailored to the ps

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to understand the impact of living with Klinefelter syndrome (XXY) as an adolescent or an adult and to examine the factors that contribute to adaptation.
METHODS: Individuals (n = 310) aged 14-75 years with self-reported XXY were recruited from online support networks to complete a self-administered survey. Perceived consequences, perceived severity, perceived stigma, and coping were measured and evaluated as correlates of adaptation.
RESULTS: The use of problem-focused coping strategies was positively correlated with adaptation (p < 0.01) and age was

The field of cardiovascular genetic counseling has evolved dramatically in recent years largely to manage the unique psychological needs of the inherited cardiovascular disease patient population. For many, there can be difficulty in coming to terms with a diagnosis, whether it be adjusting to lifestyle recommendations such as exclusion from competitive sports or living with a small but remarkable risk of sudden cardiac death. For those considered at risk of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias, the decision to have an implantable cardioverter defibrillator can be difficult. Living with th

BACKGROUND: Skin disease is a global public health problem that often has physiological, psychological and social impacts. However, it is not very clear how to adapt to these impacts, especially psychosocial adaptation of patients with skin disease.
METHODS: We searched EMBASE, PubMed, CINAHL and PsycINFO from 2009 to 2018. The following themes were extracted from the included articles: the concepts, related factors, and interventions for psychosocial adaptation of patients with skin disease. Two reviewers independently screened and analyzed.
RESULTS: From 2261 initial records, 69 studies we

Emotion regulation (ER) has been found to contribute to psychological symptoms. Previous studies have mostly examined various aspects of ER in isolation. Comprehensive knowledge regarding the relative influence of distinct aspects of ER is lacking. Also, it is not clear whether distinct aspects of ER are associated with specific psychological symptoms. This cross-sectional study aimed to explore the relative association of six ER indicators (adaptive/maladaptive regulation of negative affect [NA], adaptive/ maladaptive regulation of positive affect [PA], and adaptive/ maladaptive ER repertoire

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart disease (CHD) affects 1% of live births globally. Although depression and anxiety are commonly recognized in adults with CHD, psychological challenges extend beyond traditional diagnoses to include regulatory flexibility and cognitive adaptability, which influence coping strategies.
CASE SUMMARY: A 40-year-old woman with a history of complex CHD presented for psychological support before major cardiac surgery. The patient described feeling "at war" with her body, demonstrating patterns of counterdependency and analytical problem-solving. Assessment revealed specif

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) is one of the most demanding chronic diseases for children and their families, since controlling diabetes involves a process of co-regulation with attachment figures. However, there is insufficient evidence in middle childhood on psychological mechanisms involved that might complicate the adaptation of these children. Therefore, 106 children (N = 31 with T1D and N = 75 as matched healthy group [HG]) aged 8 to 13 were assessed using the Child Attachment Interview, the Child Behavior Checklist, and the measure of glycated hemoglobin. Results showed that insecure T1

1. Hair loss, even when it occurs gradually, is usually accompanied by psychologic discomfort. For some chemotherapy patients, the prospect of hair loss is viewed with more dread than any of the other physical discomforts that accompany chemotherapy. 2. The pattern and extent of hair loss cannot be accurately predicted for a given patient. Chemotherapy causes alopecia by damaging hair stem cells and hair follicles making the hair brittle and causing scalp hair to break off or fall out. 3. Education and support of the patient is highly significant in helping the patient adjust to hair loss. Nur

In most cases psychosomatic patients are not vitally threatened. Nevertheless almost half of the emergency patients have got psychical disturbances (e.g. neurotic heart disease, states of hyperventilation or vertigo). A reason is not only the personal development of early childhood. More often the problems are to be found within strained relations. The physical illness can be conceived as an (unconscious) attempt to master a conflict or loss, as narcissistic reparation, as adaption-effort or even as self destruction Selye's theory of stress presents the linkage between the organ pathology and

Cognitive reappraisal, an adaptive emotion regulation strategy that involves subjectively reinterpreting stressful and adverse experiences in a more positive manner, can enhance personal resilience. Personal resilience is a constellation of attributes that facilitate successful coping and an expeditious return to adaptive functioning after exposure to stress or adversity. This meta-analysis evaluated the association between cognitive reappraisal and personal resilience. A systematic and exhaustive search identified 64 independent samples from 55 studies (N = 29,824) that examined the correlati

Behavioural coping strategies represent a key means by which people regulate their stress levels. Attention has recently focused on the potential role in coping of 'displacement behaviour' - activities such as scratching, lip biting and face touching. Increased levels of displacement behaviour are associated with feelings of anxiety and stress; however, the extent to which displacement behaviour, as a short-term behavioural response to emotionally challenging stimuli, influences the subsequent experience of stress remains poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the potentia
