Burnout, Work Addiction and Stress-Related Growth Among Emergency Physicians and Residents: A Comparative Study.

The field of emergency medicine (EM) is a high-stress medical specialty. We aim to comparatively investigate burnout, work addiction, and stress-related growth between EM physicians and EM residents. Our sample consists of 117 EM professionals, 41 physicians and 76 residents, from 5 out of the 12 EM county departments in Romania that run residency programs. Methods: An online survey was sent to 461 EM professionals (170 physicians and 291 residents), with a response rate of 25.4%. The survey comprised two sections: the first focused on sociodemographic and professional data, with the second co

Precision Genomics: A Reality Having Universal Impact in a New Era of Psychiatry - Lessons Learned, Past and Present.

Addiction neuroscience explores the complex interplay between genetic, neurobiological, environmental, and socio-spiritual factors underlying substance and behavioral addictions. Over the past three decades, research in this domain has identified critical molecular and epigenetic mechanisms-particularly those affecting dopaminergic signaling and reward pathways-that contribute to both vulnerability and resilience to addictive behaviors. Central to this understanding is the concept of reward deficiency syndrome (RDS), first introduced by Kenneth Blum, which posits that hypodopaminergic function

Behavioral Health Care Delivery Through Street Medicine Programs in California.

Mental health and substance use disorders are prevalent among people experiencing homelessness. Street Medicine can reach unhoused people who face barriers to accessing healthcare in more traditional medical settings including shelter-based clinics. However, there is little guidance on best practices for mental health and substance use treatment through Street Medicine. The aim of the study was to describe behavioral health care through Street Medicine by analyzing data from the California Street Medicine Landscape survey and follow-up qualitative interviews. Most street medicine programs util

Substance Use Disorders and Role of Complementary and Integrative Medicine/Functional Medicine.

Substance use disorders are a growing concern for all ages, including adolescents. Even though there is an increase in recreational substance use and a wider variety of drugs is available to this young population, treatment options remain scarce. Most medications have limited evidence in this population. Few specialists treat individuals struggling with addiction along with mental health disorders. As the evidence grows, these treatments are usually included in complementary and integrative medicine. This article discusses available evidence for many complementary and integrative treatment app

[Short intervention in patients with alcohol problems--counseling materials developed by the German Federal Medical Council and the German Federal Center for Health Education].

The German Medical Association and the Federal Centre for Health Education have developed counselling material to support physicians in their efforts at counselling and treating persons with alcohol problems. The material consists of a counselling manual for diagnosis and therapy in the framework of ambulatory primary health care and of a brochure for patients on the basis of evidence-based medicine. The counselling manual for general practitioners and the brochure for the patients are both designed around the same core ideas and make a distinction between low risk alcohol consumption and risk

A review of the history, actions, and legitimate uses of cocaine.

The history of cocaine is charted with specific reference to its usefulness as a medicine and local anesthetic. It is common knowledge that coca leaves were used as a panacea and local anesthetic throughout the history of the Incan Empire of Peru. In Europe, however, its medical usefulness was not fully recognized until Carl Koller used it to anesthetize the cornea of the eye. Over the next 20 years, cocaine became a popular medicine and tonic in Europe and America, where it was credited with curing a wide variety of diseases and illnesses. However, reports soon started to appear claiming that

Anabolic Androgenic Steroids: Emerging Use Disorder, Mechanisms of Action, and Clinical Considerations for Pharmacotherapy.

Anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) are synthetic versions of testosterone that are frequently used as performance-enhancing drugs. Over the past few decades, these drugs have become more popular and readily available through online clinics and retail outlets. At the same time, increasing evidence has demonstrated their addictive potential and the likely emergence of an AAS use disorder. In addition to their impact on reward pathways, which is similar to that of other addictive substances, AAS have an addiction-related unique mechanism involving hormonal dysregulations of the hypothalamic-pitui

[Medical complications connected with the use of drugs].

Aside from disease induced by the direct pharmacological effect of heroin or cocaine, the occurrence of several medical complications not directly related to the drug itself is becoming an increasingly serious problem. In addition to the well-known occurrence of infective diseases, including AIDS, related to the i.v. use of heroin, heroin addicts also seem significantly more at risk for chronic nephropathy. Amyloidotic nephropathy is especially frequent in addicts who use heroin by subcutaneous route (skin popping); it seems to be mediated by an immunologic mechanism. Amyloidotic nephropathy i

Assessment and treatment of compulsive sexual behavior disorder: a sexual medicine perspective.

INTRODUCTION: The addition of compulsive sexual behavior disorder (CSBD) into the ICD-11 chapter on mental, behavioral, or neurodevelopmental disorders has greatly stimulated research and controversy around compulsive sexual behavior, or what has been termed "hypersexual disorder," "sexual addiction," "porn addiction," "sexual compulsivity," and "out-of-control sexual behavior." OBJECTIVES: To identify where concerns exist from the perspective of sexual medicine and what can be done to resolve them. METHODS: A scientific review committee convened by the International Society for Sexual Medic

Beyond Stigma-Integrating Neurobiology, Genetics, and Awareness Integration Theory in Addiction Recovery.

Addiction continues to be heavily stigmatized due to lingering misconceptions that frame substance use as a moral failing rather than a treatable neurobiological disorder. This stigma, when internalized, intensifies shame and obstructs recovery. Awareness Integration Theory, a multidisciplinary therapeutic model, addresses these internalized beliefs by identifying and integrating fragmented aspects of the self across thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and promotes self-awareness, emotional regulation, and cognitive restructuring, critical components in reducing shame and fostering resilience. This

Opioid drugs in maintenance and detoxification treatment of opiate addiction; Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, HHS. Final rule.

The Department of Health and Human Services and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) are issuing final regulations for the use of narcotic drugs in maintenance and detoxification treatment of opioid addiction. This final rule repeals the existing narcotic treatment regulations enforced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and creates a new regulatory system based on an accreditation model. In addition, this final rule shifts administrative responsibility and oversight from FDA to SAMHSA. This rulemaking initiative follows a study by the Institute of Medi

Costs of care for persons with opioid dependence in commercial integrated health systems.

BACKGROUND: When used in general medical practices, buprenorphine is an effective treatment for opioid dependence, yet little is known about how use of buprenorphine affects the utilization and cost of health care in commercial health systems. METHODS: The objective of this retrospective cohort study was to examine how buprenorphine affects patterns of medical care, addiction medicine services, and costs from the health system perspective. Individuals with two or more opioid-dependence diagnoses per year, in two large health systems (System A: n = 1836; System B: n = 4204) over the time span

Perinatal Substance Use-Related Content at Major Addiction Scientific Conferences: An Analysis of Oral Presentation Sessions.

BACKGROUND: Substance use is a leading cause of pregnancy-associated death in the US. It is not known if the amount of perinatal content at national addiction science conferences reflects the research and education being done in this area nationally. METHODS: We analyzed oral presentation sessions at five major addiction scientific conferences from 2021 to 2023 (American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry [AAAP], American Society of Addiction Medicine [ASAM], Association for Multidisciplinary Education and Research in Substance use and Addiction [AMERSA], College on Problems of Drug Dependence [

Timing of Vasopressin Addition to Norepinephrine and Efficacy Outcomes in Patients With Septic Shock.

BACKGROUND: Current guidelines recommend norepinephrine as the first-line vasopressor in septic shock followed by addition of vasopressin to achieve a goal mean arterial pressure. Limited evidence exists evaluating how the timing of vasopressin addition affects clinical outcomes in septic shock. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine whether the timing of the addition of vasopressin to norepinephrine affects shock resolution. METHODS: This was a multi-site, single system, retrospective cohort, institutional review board (IRB)-approved study examining adult patients with sept

The battle over "food addiction".

Despite decades of nutrition, obesity, and diabetes research, and worsening prevalences and severities of virtually every chronic metabolic disease, the scientific community remains divided over the existence and veracity of the concept of food addiction. There are numerous rationalizations - 1) you need food to survive, (of which "Food is Medicine" is the latest mantra); 2) people with obesity should not be stigmatized as "mentally ill"; 3) people with obesity should instead adhere to "personal responsibility"; 4) the data are incomplete and not strong enough; 5) it's correlation but not caus

Building a strong foundation from the ground up: the impact of a medical student substance use disorder organization on curriculum and community.

Due to the increasing rates of substance use disorders (SUDs), accidental overdoses, and associated high mortality rates, there is an urgent need for well-trained physicians who can grasp these complex issues and help struggling patients. Preparing these physicians occurs through targeted education and clinical exposure in conjunction with medical school curricula in the field of addiction medicine. Medical students can often feel overwhelmed by the medical school curriculum and changes to the curriculum take time, money, and administrative commitment to ratify. Implementing a student organiza

Effect of opioid use disorder training on the attitudes of emergency medicine providers toward treatment of opioid use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) remains a significant public health concern in the United States, claiming a staggering number of lives annually. Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) with buprenorphine has emerged as an effective intervention. However, its utilization remains low, especially in Emergency Departments (EDs), due in part to bias against addiction. This study evaluated the impact of a grant to increase OUD treatment in the ED from the Ohio Department of Health on bias among ED providers. METHODS: A longitudinal survey of emergency medicine providers was conducted before and
