The familial adenomatous polyposis syndrome is an autosomal dominant inherited disease characterized by progressive development of multiple adenomatous polyps throughout the colon and rectum. Due to the malignant potential of adenomatous polyps, colorectal cancer develops in 100% of cases, approximately 10-15 years after the onset of symptoms. Extracolonic manifestations of the disease including adenomatous polyps of the stomach, duodenum, small intestine and periampullatory region are rare. The etiology of the disease is germline mutation at the site of tumor suppressor gene located on chromo

BACKGROUND: Colorectal adenomatous and, probably, hyperplastic polyp development requires epithelial remodelling and stratification, with loss of E-cadherin expression implicated in adenoma formation. We have shown that P-cadherin, normally expressed in stratified epithelia and placenta, is aberrantly expressed in disturbed epithelial architecture associated with colitis.
AIMS: (i) To investigate the role of P-cadherin in colonic polyp formation. (ii) To ascertain whether expression of P-cadherin is independent of or correlated with expression of its associated proteins--E-cadherin, beta-cate

Patients with acromegaly are reported to be at risk of developing adenomatous colonic polyps, which are considered to be preneoplastic lesions. This assumption is, however, usually drawn from results obtained in rather small series of patients or without a control group. We, therefore, undertook a prospective colonoscopic and pathological study comprising 103 acromegalic patients and 138 nonacromegalic control subjects referred for irritable bowel syndrome. The prevalence of adenomatous colonic polyps was significantly increased in acromegalic patients compared to that in control subjects (22.

This study reviews different aspects of hereditary colorectal cancer associated with three polyposis syndromes: familial adenomatous polyposis, juvenile polyposis coli and Peutz-Jeghers syndrome. All these syndromes share some similarities: low incidence, autosomal dominant inheritance, genetic predisposition to colorectal cancer and/or other extracolonic cancers. Classical familial adenomatous polyposis is clinically defined by the presence of hundreds of adenomatous polyps in the colon and rectum, whereas less than 100 polyps are found in attenuated familial adenomatous polyposis. Here we report two cases of inverted hyperplastic polyps of the colon. The first patient showed three inverted hyperplastic polyps in the ascending colon, one of which was associated with adenoma. We immunostained this adenoma-associated polyp using anti-beta-catenin antibody and found accumulation of beta-catenin in the cytoplasm of the adenomatous lesion but not in the inverted hyperplastic polyp. This suggested an adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) mutation in the adenomatous region but not in the inverted hyperplastic polyp. The inverted hyperplastic polyp in the second patient was located a

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Obesity is a rising problem in industrialized countries. Numerous epidemiologic studies have shown a positive association between obesity and colorectal polyps. There are few studies investigating the association between colorectal adenomatous polyps and body fat composition in Korea. We tried to examine the relationship between body fatness and colorectal adenomatous polyps in health check-up subjects in Korea.
METHODS: Six thousand seven hundred and six routine health check-up subjects, who visited our hospital between March 2002 and April 2005 and underwent distal colon ex

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is characterized by multiple gastrointestinal hamartomatous polyps, mucocutaneous melanin deposition, and increased risk of cancer, mainly in the gastrointestinal tract. We examined mutations of the LKB1, beta-catenin, APC, K-ras, and p53 genes in 27 gastrointestinal hamartomatous polyps from 10 patients in nine PJS families. Of these hamartomatous polyps, one intestinal polyp had an adenomatous lesion, and one gastric polyp contained adenomatous and carcinomatous lesions. Germ-line mutations of the LKB1 gene were detected in six PJS families. Somatic mutations of

The aim of this study is to analyze the risk factors associated with the development of adenomatous and malignant polyps in the gallbladder. Adenomatous polyps of the gallbladder are considered precancerous and have a high likelihood of progressing into malignancy. Preoperatively, distinguishing between benign gallbladder polyps, adenomatous polyps, and malignant polyps is challenging. Therefore, the objective is to develop a neural network model that utilizes these risk factors to accurately predict the nature of polyps. This predictive model can be employed to differentiate the nature of pol

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in the world. Most colon cancer develop from the polyps. Data on the prevalence of colorectal polyps in Nepal is lacking. The objective was to determine the prevalence of colorectal polyps, site of occurrence and adenomas among various age groups. All polyps after removal by polypectomy was sent for histopathological examination.
METHODS: Study was done in 1027 consecutive patients who underwent colonoscopy in the pre-specified time after excluding patients with colorectal cancer, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and polyposis

BAP1 Tumor Predisposition Syndrome (BAP1-TPDS) is caused by germline pathogenic variants in the BAP1 gene and has been associated with uveal melanoma, mesothelioma, cutaneous melanoma, renal cell carcinoma, and other benign cutaneous lesions. Adenomatous colon polyposis has not previously been reported as part of BAP1-TPDS. We report two patients with unexplained adenomatous oligopolyposis and germline BAP1 pathogenic variants. To determine if BAP1 had a role in polypogenesis, we performed somatic mutational analysis on multiple polyps from both patients (n = 8 total polyps tested). In every p

Patients with adenomatous polyposis, usually defined as patients with >10 adenomatous polyps in the colorectum, are at increased risk for colorectal cancer (CRC). Since surgical and endoscopic treatment do not completely eliminate the potential for future polyps or extraintestinal neoplasms, there is an unmet medical need to identify pharmacological agents to delay major surgical interventions. We present two cases of patients with adenomatous polyposis who developed chronic myelogenous leukaemia and were treated with imatinib as part of their chemotherapy. A sustained regression of the coloni

INTRODUCTION: Adenomatous polyps in the gastrointestinal system rarely occur in childhood and are accompanied by syndromes such as Familial adenomatous polyposis, attenuated familial adenomatous polyposis, and MUTYH-associated polyposis, Gardner and Turcot syndrome, and also mismatch repair (MMR) gene defects. In this article, we want to present a rare patient who had adenomatous polyposis and in situ carcinoma and was detected biallelic MMR gene defect.
CASE: A 16-year-old female patient admitted with painless rectal bleeding, chronic abdominal pain, and anorexia for 1 year. Her physical exa

Familial adenomatous polyposis is a highly complex and multifaceted colorectal cancer prone disorder which is often significantly confounded by extracolonic cancers inclusive of gastric cancer, a significant problem in the Orient. Gastric cancer in familial adenomatous polyposis is heavily influenced by fundic gland polyps which are often so voluminous as to defy effective endoscopic surveillance. This study involves more than two decades of investigation of an attenuated familial adenomatous polyposis family where gastric cancer posed an early diagnostic problem because it was obscured by mul

Five cases of juvenile polyps at the level of a ureterosigmoidostomy are described. One of the juvenile polyps contained an area of adenomatous tissue. The mechanisms that might cause these polyps are discussed. The mechanisms that might cause these polyps are discussed. The presence of adenomatous tissue in one of the patients may be a step of the polyp cancer sequence at the level of ureteral implantation in the colon. The authors make a plea for a call-up and close follow-up of all patients who have a ureterosigmoidostomy.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancers often arise from benign polyps. Adenomatous polyps and serrated polyps progress step by step to adenocarcinoma and change into malignant cancers. Genetic and epigenetic changes have correlation with specific stages of polyp-adenocarcinoma progression and colorectal cancer histopathological changes.
AIMS: In this study we used immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining in sporadic colorectal polyps to assay functional status of MLH1, MSH2, MSH6, and PMS2 proteins, to track genetic/epigenetic roles of this issue in our patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sect

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Lesions may be missed during colonoscopy because of anatomical features such as mucosal folds. This feasibility study assessed the safety and efficacy of a novel colonoscope with extra-wide angle of view, which provides a simultaneous lateral-backward view to complement the forward view.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Consecutive patients undergoing colonoscopy using the prototype colonoscope were enrolled in this multicenter, single-arm study. The number of adverse events, and the first detection of adenomas during withdrawal by the lateral-backward view and the forward vie

In 72 of 13,500 patients who underwent endoscopy of the upper digestive tract during an 8-year period, 99 gastric polyps were found. All the polyps were biopsied; 18 were also removed. Histological examination of the 99 polyps showed that 25 were inflammatory, 23 hyperplastic, 17 hyperplasiogenic, 10 adenomatous, 3 hamartomatous, 3 with intestinal metaplasia and 18 with normal mucosa. The histological diagnosis was changed following polypectomy in 50% of the polyps that had been removed. Dysplasia was discovered in two adenomatous polyps; no carcinoma was found. In two cases the polyps were sy

Endoscopy with multiple biopsies of the upper gastrointestinal tract was repeated yearly over a two to six year period in nine patients with familial polyposis coli from three families. Adenomatous polyps, one to 20 in number and 2-8 mm in size, were detected in the antrum and the first and second duodenal portions in seven patients, while hyperplastic polyps were detected in four patients in the gastric body. In two patients adenomatous tubules were observed in the biopsies of endoscopically normal mucosa from the same area where adenomatous polyps later developed. Lymphoid polyps were detect

318 adenomatous polyps were removed by colonoscopic polypectomy, from two hundred patients, between 25 to 88 years old; 60.50% men, and 39.50% women. 86.50% of patients were older than 50 years old. In 64.50% of patients the adenomatous polyp was single, and 35.50% had "multiple adenoma"; the lesions distribution was 72.64% in the rectum-sigmoid colon. The grade of dysplasia was severe in adenomas over 20mm, and in those of villous type. The malignant percentage was: 1.61% in the adenomatous polyp under 10mm in diameter, 8.49% in those of 10mm to 19mm, and 30.68% in the adenomas of 20mm or mor

The prevalence of adenomatous and hyperplastic polyps of the colon and the degree of involvement of the aorta by atherosclerotic lesions were evaluated in 842 autopsies from New Orleans. A positive statistical association between the two variables was found in white males under 75 years of age. In black males a positive correlation between atherosclerotic lesions and adenomatous (but not hyperplastic) polyps was found. The most extensive involvement of the aorta by atherosclerosis was found in patients in whom adenomatous and hyperplastic polyps coincided. The possibilities that dietary factor
