BACKGROUND: Adjustment disorder (AD) is common among medically ill patients, yet current evaluation methods do not address the specific characteristics in this population. This study aimed to develop a measurement scale for AD in medically ill patients in Colombia and to find evidence of its validity and reliability.
METHODS: This was a scale development and validation study. In the first qualitative phase, items were developed. In the second phase, the content validity of each item was evaluated by patients and clinicians. In the third phase, structural validity, internal consistency, test-r

BACKGROUND: This longitudinal study focuses on the question to what extent symptoms of adjustment disorder (AD) occurred in the Dutch population in response to the corona pandemic.
AIM: To explore which (a) personal characteristics and which (b) pandemic, (c) health or (d) trauma-related factors are related to symptoms of AD.
METHOD: 2079 people (time 1) and 777 people (time 2) participated in an online questionnaire since 2020. Prevalence of adjustment disorder and the concurrent and longitudinal associations between the factors (a-d) and AD severity were determined.
RESULTS: A third exper

OBJECTIVE: Adjustment Disorder (AD) is a stress-related condition characterized by emotional and behavioral symptoms triggered by various identifiable stressors. Impulsivity, marked by difficulties in decision-making and control, and deficits in metacognition, which regulate cognitive awareness, are common in AD. This study explores potential associations between dimensions of impulsive behavior, as defined by the UPPS (Urgency, Premeditation, Perseverance, Sensation Seeking) model, and metacognitive beliefs in individuals with AD.
METHOD: This cross-sectional study included 75 male individua

BACKGROUND: Although it has been widely established that poor social functioning is a characteristic of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), little research has examined the relationship between OCD symptom subtypes and domains of social functioning. Thus, the present study sought to examine the specific ways in which impairment in social adjustment occurs in each symptom subtype of OCD.
METHODS: A total of 325 adult participants with a primary diagnosis of OCD were included in the study. Hierarchical linear regressions were used to compare the extent to which OCD symptom subtypes predicted s

Adjustment disorder (AD) is one of the most frequent mental health conditions after stressful life experiences in the medical setting. The diagnosis has been conceptually redefined in International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) and now includes specific symptoms of preoccupations and failure to adapt. The current study assesses the prevalence of self-reported ICD-11 AD among organ transplantation patients and their relatives, explores the association of patients' demographic-, transplant-, and health-related characteristics and ICD-11 AD symptoms, and evaluates the role of social support

Adjustment Disorder (AD) is one of the most common psychiatric diagnoses employed. In fact, it is the most frequent diagnosis utilized for psychiatric disorders in the military and in children, and is often utilized in the consultation-liaison medical setting. However, it is acknowledged that the diagnosis is not reliable, it cannot be validated, and it has an important degree of subjective consideration in its use. Commonly used screening tools like the Hamilton and Beck Depression Scales do not give an assessment of AD. Furthermore, its use is accompanied with descriptors of depression, anxi

BACKGROUND: Although adjustment disorder is common, there is a dearth of research on its physical health consequences. Earlier studies, biological mechanisms and stress-related behaviors suggest that cancer may be a potential sequelae of adjustment disorder. This study examined the association between adjustment disorder and type-specific cancer incidence in a nationwide cohort.
METHODS: Data were obtained from the comprehensive nationwide medical and administrative registries of Denmark. We calculated the incidence of type-specific cancers from 1995 to 2013 in patients with a prior adjustmen

BACKGROUND: Although Adjustment Disorder (AD) is a prevalent diagnosis in adolescent mental health services and linked to suicidal tendency in adolescence, little research exists examining prevalence and gender differences of suicidal symptoms among AD patients using standardized instruments.
AIMS: The present study aims to assess the presence of suicidal tendency in a clinical sample of Spanish adolescents with AD analyzing gender differences.
METHOD: Ninety-seven adolescents with AD were recruited at a public mental health center and included in the AD sample; they were administered the In

Using Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (American Psychiatric Association, 2000) criteria, we investigated whether the diagnosis adjustment disorder (AD) described first-year college students' adjustment problems. We found that a substantial portion of students experienced a set of adjustment symptoms meeting the AD criteria. Another portion of students reported adjustment concerns that were problematic but did not meet the AD diagnosis threshold. Female students tended to report more symptoms than do male students. College counseling implicat

We recently described an increase of pain thresholds and tolerances for thermal and electrical pain in patients suffering from adjustment disorder (AD). Furthermore, we presented evidence that pain perception in major depressive disorder (MDD) depends on pain modality, with thresholds for ischemic pain being decreased compared to increased thermal and electrical pain thresholds. Here, we investigated perception of experimentally induced ischemic pain in 15 patients suffering from AD (subtype with depressive symptoms) and controls matched for age and sex in order to examine whether a similar pa

OBJECTIVE: Research on adolescent adjustment disorder (AD) is scarce. We characterized adolescent outpatients with AD in psychosocial background and treatment received compared with patients with other non-psychotic disorders (OND). Furthermore, we explored precipitant stressors, distress symptoms and behavioral problems among males and females with AD.
METHOD: Data were collected prospectively on 290 consecutive psychiatric outpatients, aged 12-22 yrs, at a secondary care clinic in Finland. DSM-III-R diagnoses were assigned, based on all available information, at the end of treatment.

Although Adjustment Disorder (AD) is considered a marginal diagnostic category by many clinicians and researchers, all the rare studies undertaken in the last decades indicate that the prevalence of this disorder is high in psychiatric settings, but has never been investigated in general practice. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the current prevalence of Adjustment Disorders With Anxiety (ADWA) in primary care settings and to describe the characteristics of the population, nature of the stressors and management of the disorder by General Practitioners (GPs). This French study involve

The diagnosis of adjustment disorder is a dilemma in older medically ill patients. The authors conducted a prospective study of older cardiac surgery patients. Semistructured interview techniques were used to distinguish emotional impairment from physical impairment to diagnose an adjustment disorder. Among 71 patients interviewed at three points in time, 50.7% had an adjustment disorder. At 6 months after surgery, 30.6% were still showing evidence of emotional functional impairment. Continued impairment was related to initial severity of depressive and anxiety symptoms. Implications and sugge

Adolescents from two time periods, diagnosed with adjustment disorder (n = 72), were examined retrospectively for the type of life stressors that initiated their referrals to a child psychiatry unit. They were compared with a control group of adolescents (n = 42) who were referred to the unit during the same time periods and who received a diagnosis of "no psychopathology." Disappointment in relationships with a family member or with a friend of the opposite sex was found to be the main stressor. Frequency of distribution of the stressors was almost the same in the two time periods. Patients w

OBJECTIVE: Breast cancer survivors (BCS) may experience problems to adjust to their situation after cancer treatment completion. In case of severe distress, an adjustment disorder (AD) might develop. This study investigates the course of AD symptoms during 1 year and its predictors in BCS up to 5 years post-treatment.
METHODS: BCS completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months. HADS total scores were defined as no mental disorder (MD) symptoms (≤ 10), AD symptoms (11-14), and any other MD symptoms (≥ 15). Over the course of four assessments, sympto

OBJECTIVE: There is some evidence that posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with increased risk of infections, and it is unknown whether adjustment disorder is as well. We assessed the association between adjustment disorder and subsequent infections, and assessed additive interaction with sex.
METHODS: The study population included a nationwide cohort of all Danish-born residents of Denmark diagnosed with adjustment disorder between 1995 and 2011, and an age- and sex-matched general population comparison cohort. We compared rates of infections requiring inpatient or outpatient

BACKGROUND: Successful medication management for bipolar disorder requires clinicians to monitor and adjust regimens as needed, to achieve maximum effectiveness and patient adherence. This study aims to measure the prevalence of indications for medication adjustment at visits for bipolar disorder treatment; the frequency with which physicians recommend medication adjustments; and how strongly the indications predict the adjustments.
METHODS: Data included 3,094 visits for 457 patients in Bipolar CHOICE, a comparative effectiveness study that compared treatment with lithium versus quetiapine.
