Parental Phubbing and Adolescent Depression: The Role of Parental Involvement and Adolescent Grit.

Phubbing has become a widespread phenomenon in the era of mobile Internet. The Phubbing behavior in parent-adolescent relationships and its effects are gaining increasing academic attention. This study aimed to explore the mediating role of parental involvement between parental phubbing and adolescent depression, as well as the moderating role of grit in this relationship. Participants were 670 high school students (390 girls, 58.2%), aged 13 ∼ 19 years (M = 15.73, SD = 0.92). A questionnaire measuring parental phubbing, parental involvement, adolescent grit, adolescent depression, and demogra

Comparing factors associated with maternal and adolescent reports of adolescent traumatic event exposure.

Existing research indicates that there is very little agreement between youth and their parents on youth trauma exposure and subsequent treatment. Few studies, however, have attempted to examine factors that may contribute to this lack of agreement. This study addressed this gap by examining youth and maternal-reported youth traumatic event exposure using a sample of 100 urban, African American adolescent-maternal dyads. Cumulative report of youth potentially traumatic event exposure (57%) was higher than youth (41%) and maternal (27%) reports. Findings indicate that there was agreement for se

Characteristics of adolescent patients and their health problems at an adolescent health clinic.

In Taiwan, there has been an increase in biopsychosocial morbidity among adolescents in the past ten years, but neither an adolescent health care delivery system nor a subspecialty training program in adolescent medicine has been hitherto established. To better understand the characteristics of adolescent patients and their health problems, the sociodemography and health problems of all adolescent patients aged 11 to 21 years who visited the Adolescent Health Clinic twice or more during January, 1994 and December, 1995 at a college hospital, were analysed by reviewing patients' medical records

Mother-Adolescent Discrepancies in Reports of Relationship Quality and Early Adolescent Internalizing Symptoms.

This 3-wave longitudinal study examined the bidirectional associations between adolescents' and mothers' perceptions of the mother-adolescent relationship quality (i.e., warmth and hostility) and internalizing symptoms (i.e., depressive symptoms and loneliness). The focus was on the direction of effects between internalizing symptoms and both the levels of and discrepancies in mothers' and adolescents' perceptions of mother-adolescent relationship quality and potential differential associations with depressive symptoms and loneliness over time. A total of 622 early adolescents (55% girls, Mage

Adolescent Vaping: Revisiting developmental perspectives on adolescent substance use in the digital age.

Every wave of preferred substance use in adolescence serves similar developmental functions. The recent explosion among adolescents of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), popularly known as vaping, offers an opportunity to revisit models of the role of substance use in adolescent development. Social media's rise alongside that of ENDS distinguishes this recent phenomenon from previous historical waves of substance abuse: Vaping was and remains highly integrated into the digital culture, situating social media as a unique window into the adolescent users' subjective experience. To that

Caregiver emotional support and adolescent trauma symptoms after sexual abuse: Adolescent age matters.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents who have been sexually abused often experience trauma symptoms, and caregiver emotional support has been highlighted as fundamental to the recovery process. Yet the benefits of caregiver emotional support may differ for adolescents of different ages. OBJECTIVE: This study examines whether the relation between caregiver emotional support and adolescent trauma symptoms after sexual abuse varies across adolescents of different ages. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Participants were 829 adolescents; 92.7 % were female and the remainder was male. All reported sexual abuse and we

Adolescent Emotional Reactivity in Family and School Contexts: Prospective Links to Adolescent Psychopathology.

Emotional reactivity has been linked to adolescent psychopathology and mental health problems. However, limited research has investigated the distinct associations between emotional reactivity in multiple interpersonal contexts and the development of adolescent psychopathology. The current study examined emotional reactivity to interparental conflict, parent-adolescent conflict, and school problems as predictors of adolescent internalizing problems, depressive symptoms, and anxiety symptoms six months later. The sample included 139 adolescents (54% girls; Mage = 13.30, SDage = 0.73) and their

Adolescent Pregnancy: A Case-Series Study of 112 Adolescent Mothers and Their Newborns.

Background Although declining, adolescent pregnancy remains an important health concern and is associated with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. We aimed to characterize adolescent pregnancy in a level II hospital and the observed maternal, fetal, and perinatal complications. Methods We conducted a case-series study of five-years duration with adolescent mothers and their newborns. We collected sociodemographic, obstetric, and neonatal data through chart review and conducted a comparison analysis between newborns who needed hospitalization and those who did not. Results We identified 112 ne

The Adolescent Champion Model: Primary Care Becomes Adolescent-Centered via Targeted Quality Improvement.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of implementing the Adolescent Champion model, a novel quality improvement program targeted at helping primary care sites become more adolescent-centered. STUDY DESIGN: Nine primary care sites from pediatrics, family medicine, and medicine-pediatrics implemented the Adolescent Champion model. Each site identified a multidisciplinary champion team to undergo training on adolescent-centered care, deliver prepackaged trainings to other staff and providers, make youth-friendly site changes, implement a standardized flow to confidentially screen for risky behavio

Body composition of adolescent males. Part I. Total body water in normal adolescent males. Part II. Body composition of the male reference adolescent.

This study was undertaken to obtain total body water (TBW) data suitable for derivation of body composition of the typical adolescent male. TBW by the deuterium dilution method, stage of sexual development and anthropometric parameters (weight, height and triceps and subscapular skinfold thickness) were determined in 108 males between 10 and 14 years of age, whose weight and height fell between the 10th and the 90th percentile of the NCHS reference data. TBW/weight did not change significantly between 10 and 14 years, although a slight increase after age 11 years and from genital stage 2 to st

Does later chronotype cause poorer adolescent mental health? An adolescent brain cognitive development study.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated whether chronotype (biobehavioral preference for sleep and wake timing) across early adolescence impacts mental health symptoms at age 13-14. This is a relationship with growing correlational evidence but limited causal exploration. METHODS: Participants were 7,489 adolescents (aged 9-10 at baseline; 13-14 at the fifth assessment wave) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (ABCD). Marginal structural models with machine learning-based weight estimation were used to assess the causal impact of chronotype at ages 11-12 and 12-13, as measured b

Developmental Pathways to Adult Mental Health in Adolescent Parents: Childhood and Early Adolescent Antecedents.

This study examined three questions: 1) what are the childhood predictors of becoming a teenage parent (versus a first-time parent as a young adult); 2) does becoming a parent in the teen years carry higher risk of young-adult internalizing and externalizing problems than becoming a first-time parent as a young adult; and 3) does the relation between childhood factors and adult mental health differ between teen parents and adult parents. We combined data from two U.S. samples that were followed from age 6 through age 35. Family socioeconomic status, one's parent's marital status, parenting beh

Cannabis legalization and early adolescent expectancies: Findings from the adolescent brain cognitive development study.

PURPOSE: Cannabis legalization in the U.S. has introduced an ongoing public health challenge. Among adults, cannabis legalization is associated with increased cannabis use and shifting attitudes toward cannabis use. These expectancies, or personal beliefs about the outcomes of a behavior, are both positive (e.g., increased relaxation) and negative (e.g., cognitive impairment). With rapid shifts in state-level cannabis legislation, the associations of these policies with adolescent cannabis expectancies are unknown. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the Adolescent Brain Cogni

Informant discrepancies in adolescent anxiety assessment: The roles of adolescent depression and school avoidance.

When assessing adolescent psychopathology, discrepancies in adolescent self-report versus caregiver informant-report scores on symptom measures are typical. As anxiety is the most common mental health concern among adolescents, understanding variables associated with adolescent-caregiver informant discrepancies on anxiety measures is valuable for assessment and treatment planning. However, although anxiety often co-occurs with other problems, no existing work has examined how other common emotional/behavioral problems (i.e., depression, school avoidance) among adolescents moderate the magnitud

Early adolescent gender diversity and mental health in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study.

BACKGROUND: There are known associations between mental health symptoms and transgender identity among adults. Whether this relationship extends to early adolescents and to gender domains other than identity is unclear. This study measured dimensions of gender in a large, diverse, sample of youth, and examined associations between diverse gender experiences and mental health. METHODS: The ABCD study is an ongoing, longitudinal, US cohort study. Baseline data (release 2.0) include 11,873 youth age 9/10 (48% female); and the 4,951 1-year follow-up visits (age 10/11; 48% female) completed prior

Attachment behavior and hostility as explanatory factors linking parent-adolescent conflict and adolescent adjustment.

This study examined whether adolescents' behavior in a support-seeking context helped to explain associations between increases in mother-adolescent conflict during early adolescence and changes in adolescents' internalizing and externalizing symptoms. A sample of 194 adolescents aged 12 to 14 (51% female) and their mothers were followed over 1 year. Mother-adolescent pairs participated in a speech task introducing an external social stressor into the parent-child relationship. Using a latent difference score model, adolescents' observed attachment behavior and hostility were compared as poten
