Development and validation of the outburst monitoring scale for children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop a parent-completed questionnaire measure of specific types of aggressive behaviors in children and adolescents. METHOD: Two studies tested the psychometrics of the Outburst Monitoring Scale (OMS), a questionnaire measure of verbal, property, self, and physical aggression, based in part on the categories of the Overt Aggression Scale. In Study 1, parents of 23 adolescents with a history of aggressive-disruptive behavior and 30 control adolescents completed the OMS and other measures of aggressive-disruptive behavior. In Study 2, parents of 9 adol

A case of anterior open bite developing during adolescence.

Imaging studies have reported on the relationship between temporomandibular joint (TMJ) degeneration and facial deformity. These studies have suggested that mandibular growth is affected by TMJ degeneration, resulting in altered skeletal structure as mandibular retrusion. However, there are very few longitudinal case reports on TMJ osteoarthrosis (OA). Progressive open bite occurred in an adolescent patient with TMJ OA. Cephalometric analysis showed a downward and backward rotated mandible, and a labial inclination of the upper incisor. Magnetic resonance imaging showed internal derangement wi

Sexually transmitted diseases among adolescents in developed countries.

CONTEXT: Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are responsible for a variety of health problems, and can have especially serious consequences for adolescents and young adults. An international comparison of levels and trends in STDs would be useful to identify countries that are relatively successful in controlling the incidence of STDs, as a first step toward improving policies and programs in countries with high or growing STD incidence. METHODS: Incidence data for the past decade on three common bacterial STDs--syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia--were obtained for as many as 16 developed cou

The acquisition, development and maintenance of lottery and scratchcard gambling in adolescence.

The U.K. National Lottery and instant scratchcards are now well established yet there is still little empirical research on the players. This study was an exploratory investigation of the psychosocial effects of these forms of gambling among adolescents (n=1195; aged 11- to 15-years-old). Using a questionnaire, it was shown that large numbers of adolescents were taking part in these activities. There was a significant link between parental and child gambling with most lottery tickets and scratchcards being bought for the adolescents by their parents. Results showed that many adolescents though

The development of a testicular self-examination instructional booklet for adolescents.

Testicular cancer (TC) is the most common cancer in 15-34-year-old males, but many young men are unaware of their risks, symptoms, and possibility of detection by testicular self-examination (TSE). After a pretest to determine baseline knowledge and TSE activity, 66 young men, 15-20 years old (means = 18.5 +/- 1.5), were given a programmed-learning self-instructional booklet to read. A posttest after completion of reading the booklet assessed attitudes and new knowledge. A 2-year follow-up tested knowledge and current TSE activity. Pretest analysis revealed that only 15% of the subjects were a

[Physical development indices of children and adolescents in genetic monitoring].

The significance of physical development parameters of children and teen-agers in assessment of the state of health in this population group is emphasized. A brief analysis of some investigators' viewpoints relative to the ratio of biological and social factors in the physical development of children is given. Novel methodical approaches to more exact tabulation of the data concerning the physical development of children and teen-agers are suggested, instead of regional scales of regression generally used in this country. Statistical parameters of height-subgroup and not those of the whole age

Mentalization Profiles of Adolescents with Internalizing Disorders: Domain-specific Differences Compared to Typically Developing Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a sensitive period for mentalization development and also marks the onset and exacerbation of psychiatric conditions. Mentalization impairments are transdiagnostic, but the literature primarily focuses on younger children and adults in Western cultures, with limited exploration in adolescents. This study aimed to explore the differences between mentalization profiles of adolescents with internalizing disorders (AID) and typically developing adolescents (TDA) in India. METHODS: The sample included 166 adolescents (aged 12-17), divided into the AID group (n = 83) diag

The National Consortium on Alcohol and NeuroDevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA): A Multisite Study of Adolescent Development and Substance Use.

OBJECTIVE: During adolescence, neurobiological maturation occurs concurrently with social and interpersonal changes, including the initiation of alcohol and other substance use. The National Consortium on Alcohol and NeuroDevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA) is designed to disentangle the complex relationships between onset, escalation, and desistance of alcohol use and changes in neurocognitive functioning and neuromaturation. METHOD: A sample of 831 youth, ages 12-21 years, was recruited at five sites across the United States, oversampling those at risk for alcohol use problems. Most (83%) h

Fear learning and memory across adolescent development: Hormones and Behavior Special Issue: Puberty and Adolescence.

Throughout the past several decades, studies have uncovered a wealth of information about the neural circuitry underlying fear learning and extinction that has helped to inform treatments for fear-related disorders such as post-traumatic stress and anxiety. Yet, up to 40% of people do not respond to such treatments. Adolescence, in particular, is a developmental stage during which anxiety disorders peak, yet little is known about the development of fear-related neural circuitry during this period. Moreover, pharmacological and behavioral therapies that have been developed are based on mature c

Gender diversity and cholesterol in early adolescence: Findings from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study.

OBJECTIVES: Previous research has shown that gender minorities face health inequities, including mental and physical health disparities, but few studies have examined cardiovascular disparities, such as lipid profiles, in early adolescents. Monitoring cholesterol in adolescence is important, as early lipid levels can predict future cardiovascular risk. This study aimed to assess associations between multiple measures of gender diversity and cholesterol profiles among early adolescents. METHODS: Data from 1511 participants aged 10-14 years in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (2

Adolescence and Aging: Impact of Adolescence Inflammatory Stress and Microbiota Alterations on Brain Development, Aging, and Neurodegeneration.

Puberty/adolescence is a critical phase during neurodevelopment with numerous structural, neurochemical, and molecular changes occurring in response to genetic and environmental signals. A consequence of this major neuronal reorganizing and remodeling is a heightened level of vulnerability to stressors and immune challenges. The gut microbiota is a fundamental modulator of stress and immune responses and has been found to play a role in mental health conditions and neurodegenerative disorders. Environmental insults (stress, infection, neuroinflammation, and use of antibiotics) during adolescen

Community engagement of adolescents in the development of a patient-centered outcome tool for adolescents with a history of hypospadias repair.

INTRODUCTION: Hypospadias may lead to long-term issues with urination, sexual function and psychosocial well-being. Limited evidence exists regarding the healthcare communication preferences of male adolescents regarding sensitive topics. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the healthcare communication preferences of male adolescents regarding sensitive topics (e.g. urinary and sexual issues) and engage them in the initial stages of development of a patient-centered outcome tool for adolescents with a history of hypospadias repair. Validation of a Locally Developed Life Skills Development Package (the Manohari Module) for Adolescents in Sri Lanka: Evidence From Expert Review and Adolescent Feedback.

Background Adolescent mental health is a growing public health concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where access to mental health services is limited. Life skills-based interventions have been identified as effective strategies for promoting mental well-being. This study aimed to validate the locally developed life skill developmental package (the Manohari module) using a mixed-methods approach to support its implementation among adolescents. Methods A mixed-methods approach was employed. Expert validation was conducted using the modified Delphi method with a panel of six

Radiographic assessment of the pubic symphysis in elite male adolescent football players: Development and reliability of the Maturing Adolescent Pubic Symphysis (MAPS) classification.

INTRODUCTION: The pubic symphysis is susceptible to growth related injuries long after the adolescent growth spurt. Our study describes the radiographic maturation of the pubic symphysis on pelvic radiographs in adolescent football players and introduces the Maturing Adolescent Pubic Symphysis classification (MAPS classification). METHODS: Anteroposterior pelvic radiographs of 105 healthy adolescent male football players between 12 and 24 years old were used to develop the classification system. The radiological scoring of the symphyseal joint was developed over five rounds. The final MAPS cl

Adolescent health and the intersectionality of ethnicity/race, sex, and sexual orientation: A national probability sample from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study.

Although children with marginalized sociodemographic characteristics are exposed to increased health risk and disparities, there is a paucity of population-based research on health status of children occupying multiple social marginalities. The present study investigated implications of children's intersectional sociodemographic characteristics on health risk indicators. In this longitudinal cohort study, we used longitudinal data from the ongoing Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study. The study used a population-based sample of 9- to 10-year-old children attending private and public sc

Sleep as a moderator of adolescent brain development-evidence from a longitudinal MRI study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Adolescent brain maturation is characterized by profound structural changes to grey and white matter. While cross-sectional studies in youth indicate that measures such as sleep duration and regularity are linked to regional grey matter volumes, there is less evidence on how sleep may shape developmental trajectories over time. Therefore, the goal of this study was to test whether objectively measured sleep is a moderator of grey matter volume changes in early adolescence. METHODS: Structural MRI was acquired longitudinally at two time points six months apart in 39 healthy a
