Segmental arterial mediolysis, a rare arteriopathy first reported in humans, is described in the kidneys of 36 pigs slaughtered in an abattoir in Jutland, Denmark. The kidney changes presented themselves macroscopically as one or more cortical wedge-shaped hemorrhagic or pale lesions. The arterial lesions involved the interlobar and arcuate arteries and exhibited injurious and reparative phases of development. Two types of injurious lesions occurred: (1) a tearing separation of the outer media from the adventitia with fibrin, erythrocytes, and edema fluid filling the formed space, causing coll

Klotho plays an important role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Klotho is highly expressed in the kidney and parathyroid glands, but its presence in the vasculature is debated. Renal Klotho is decreased in CKD, but the effect of uremia on Klotho in other tissues is not defined. The effect of vitamin D receptor activator therapy in CKD on the expression of Klotho in various tissues is also in debate. In uremic rats (surgical 5/6th nephrectomy model), we compared 3 months of treatment with and without paricalcitol on Klotho immunostaining in the kidn

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Restenosis after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) of the internal mammary artery (IMA) grafts is much less pronounced than in other arteries and venous grafts. The aim of the study was to test whether various arteries respond differently to dilatation.
METHODS: PTA of the IMA, carotid, renal and circumflex coronary (RCx) arteries was performed in 9 pigs (balloon to artery ratio of 1:1.5). After 8 weeks, angiography was repeated and vessels prepared for histological analysis. Immunohistochemical staining was done to examine proliferative activity (Ki67) and to ident

Intracranial fungal aneurysms arise from major cerebral arteries. Fungi directly invade vessel walls from the luminal surface (fungal emboli) or from the adventitia (fungal meningitis). The vasa vasorum are free of fungi. Aneurysmal rupture is common with extensive hemorrhagic necrosis of the surrounding brain. Aspergillus is the usual causative agent; its sources are nasal sinusitis or endocarditis.

Progressive obstruction of an axillary vein following an axillary approach to brachial plexus blockade is described. At surgical exploration, the axillary vein was narrowed with an aneurysm of its wall. It is likely that, during the performance of the block, the needle penetrated the adventitia of the vein, causing a sub-adventitial haematoma and an aneurysm of the vein wall. Normal venous drainage was re-established surgically and the patient recovered completely.

Atherosclerosis (AS) is the common pathological basis for many cardiovascular diseases. Initial investigations into AS predominantly centered on endothelial immune responses associated with plaque formation. However, recent studies increasingly underscore the salutary immune modulation occurring on the aorta adventitia as the atheromatous plaque progresses. The immune responses extend from the intima of the vessel to the adventitia, and the artery tertiary lymphoid organ (ATLO) assumes a major immune role in advanced stages of AS, according to available studies conducted on ApoE-/- mice. In th

Vascular remodelling is an adaptive response to physiological and pathological stimuli that leads to structural and functional changes in the vascular intima, media, and adventitia. Pathological vascular remodelling is a hallmark feature of numerous vascular diseases, including atherosclerosis, hypertension, abdominal aortic aneurysm, pulmonary hypertension and preeclampsia. Autophagy is critical in maintaining cellular homeostasis, and its dysregulation has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various diseases, including vascular diseases. However, despite emerging evidence, the role of aut

The pathogenesis of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is characterized to be inflammation-associated degeneration of vascular wall. Neovascularization is regularly found in human AAA and considered to play critical roles in the development and rupture of AAA. However, little is known about lymphangiogenesis in AAA. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate both angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis in AAA. Abdominal aortic tissue was harvested either from autopsy (control group) and during open-repair surgery for AAA (AAA group). Adventitial lymphatic vasa vasorum was observed in both groups, bu

Perivascular acetylcholine (ACh)-immunoreactive nerve fibres were demonstrated in basilar and middle cerebral arteries, in pial arteries and arterioles and in intracerebral arteries of male Fisher 344 rats of 6 months (young), 15 months (adult) and 22 months (senescent). Analysis included whole mounts of basilar and middle cerebral arteries, of pial arteries and sections of brain including pia-arachnoid membrane to demonstrate the localization of nerve fibres throughout the wall of pial and of intracerebral arteries. ACh-immunoreactive nerve fibres were demonstrated by indirect immunohistochem

The author describes his experience with pulmonary hydatid disease in children. Unlike adults, pulmonary localization is common in children, up to 50% of the total cases involved. The following rules have been established for the correct treatment of this condition: 1. an accurate approach 2. sterilization and evacuation of the parasite 3. treatment of the adventitial layer of the membrane. The reason for the evacuation of the parasite is that it migrates when the adventitia is broken. The operation of "hydatid birth" is therefore recommended. This consists of the removal of the whole, intact

The vascular adventitia contains numerous cell types including fibroblasts, adipocytes, inflammatory cells, and progenitors embedded within a complex extracellular matrix (ECM) network. In response to vascular injury, adventitial progenitors and fibroblasts become activated and exhibit increased proliferative capacity and differentiate into contractile cells that remodel the ECM. These processes can lead to vascular fibrosis and disease progression. Our previous work established that the ECM protein aortic carboxypeptidase-like protein (ACLP) promotes fibrotic remodeling in the lung and is act

Tissue decellularization has emerged as a technique to provide an acellular, non-immunogenic scaffold that preserves the morphological features of native tissue. To study the possible effects of decellularization, investigating the mechanical behavior and the protein composition is crucial. In this study, we performed extension-inflation tests on native and decellularized porcine vena cava and investigated their microstructure using multiphoton microscopy. The mechanical behavior of both groups showed typical pressure-stretch curves of vascular structures with viscoelastic and nonlinear featur

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the arterial wall characterized by lipid deposition, plaque formation, and immune cell infiltration. Innate and adaptive immune cells infiltrate the artery during development of the disease. Moreover, advanced disease leads to formation of artery tertiary lymphoid organs in the adventitia (Grabner et al., 2009; Hu et al., 2015). Various and diverse types of immune cells have been identified in the aorta adventitia vs atherosclerotic plaques (Elewa et al., 2016; Galkina et al., 2006; Lotzer et al., 2010; Mohanta et al., 2016; Mohanta et al.,

BACKGROUND: Coronary endarterectomy with stent removal followed by arterial reconstruction is a surgical option for complex in-stent restenosis (ISR). However, this strategy generally assumes preservation of the coronary adventitia, and management of adventitial loss during stent removal has rarely been described.
CASE SUMMARY: A 67-year-old man on haemodialysis presented with exertional angina 1 year after percutaneous coronary intervention to the left anterior descending artery (LAD). Coronary angiography demonstrated severe ISR of the LAD with complex multivessel disease, and urgent off-pu

We attempted to establish histopathological identification between traumatic rupture and nontraumatic arterial dissection of the intracranial vertebral artery (IVA) resulting in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Step-serial observations of ruptured IVAs among four traumatic and 44 nontraumatic SAH patients were investigated. We found that the most specific characteristic for differentiation was the shape of the ruptured adventitia. Extension of the adventitia was clearly observed in nontraumatic cases. In contrast, traumatic cases showed transmural ruptures. Other specific characteristics were al

Liposarcomas, the most common soft tissue tumors, occur predominantly in the lower limbs and retroperitoneum. Primary mediastinal liposarcomas are rare and account for <1% of mediastinal masses. We report a case of a large primary mediastinal liposarcoma invading the right ventricular outflow tract, pulmonary artery, and aortic adventitia that was successfully resected. This report highlights the complex nature of liposarcomas, given their tendency to invade critical structures.

Resident CD34+ vascular wall-resident stem and progenitor cells (VW-SCs) are increasingly recognized for their crucial role in regulating vascular injury and repair. Establishing a stable and efficient method to culture functional murine CD34+ VW-SCs is essential for further investigating the mechanisms involved in the proliferation, migration, and differentiation of these cells under various physiological and pathological conditions. The described method combines magnetic bead screening and flow cytometry to purify primary cultured resident CD34+ VW-SCs. The purified cells are then functional

Intermittent claudication is frequently associated with atherosclerotic disease, but differential diagnosis must be sought in patients with no traditional risk factors. Cystic adventitial disease, of unknown etiology, most frequently affects the popliteal artery, and occasionally presents as intermittent claudication. We report a case of this disease and the surgical treatment, and discuss some aspects related to etiopathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of this condition.

Adventitial cystic disease of the popliteal artery is a rare non-atheromatous peripheral artery disease. In most cases, the cystic lesion is located in the adventitia of the popliteal artery. Herein, we present a rare case of cystic arterial disease in which the cyst was located only in the media of the popliteal artery. We successfully treated the cyst with resection of the affected popliteal artery and reconstruction with an autogenous vein graft.
