Function of Renal Nerves in Kidney Physiology and Pathophysiology.

Renal sympathetic (efferent) nerves play an important role in the regulation of renal function, including glomerular filtration, sodium reabsorption, and renin release. The kidney is also innervated by sensory (afferent) nerves that relay information to the brain to modulate sympathetic outflow. Hypertension and other cardiometabolic diseases are linked to overactivity of renal sympathetic and sensory nerves, but our mechanistic understanding of these relationships is limited. Clinical trials of catheter-based renal nerve ablation to treat hypertension have yielded promising results. Therefore

Corneal sensitivity in keratoconus: a review of the literature.

Corneal sensitivity has recently received much attention given the crucial role the corneal nerves play in maintaining normal corneal structure and function. An increased understanding of the corneal sensitivity and dry eye disease in keratoconus, including alterations of the conjunctival cells, may help explain the pathogenesis of this disorder. There is histological evidence of the involvement of corneal nerves in the pathology of keratoconus and it has been suggested that this plays a role in the pathophysiological features and progression of the disease. In this review, the impaired cornea

Brainstem viscerotopic organization of afferents and efferents involved in the control of swallowing.

Cholera toxin horseradish peroxidase (CT-HRP), a sensitive antegrade and retrograde tracer, is effective at labeling swallowing motoneurons and their dendritic fields within the nucleus ambiguus (NA), nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS), dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve, and hypoglossal nucleus. Using this tracer to label motoneurons within the NTS demonstrates that palatal, pharyngeal, and laryngeal afferents overlap considerably within the interstitial and intermediate subnuclei. These afferents have a pattern of distribution within the NTS similar to the labeling observed after appli

Somatotopic termination of spinal afferents to the feline lateral cervical nucleus.

The labelling pattern of the feline lateral cervical nucleus (LCN) was investigated after pressure injections of lectin-conjugated horseradish peroxidase into cervical, thoracic or lumbar segments of the spinal cord. Sixteen cats received a 5-8 nl injection staining large parts of mainly the ipsilateral grey matter of a single segment. Light microscopic examination of frozen sections reacted with tetramethylbenzidine showed a somatotopic organization in the LCN. Rostral segments of the spinal cord projected mainly to rostroventral and medial parts of the ipsilateral LCN, while more caudally lo

Efferent and afferent connections of the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus determined by neural tracer analysis: implications for lordosis regulation in female rats.

Neural connections of the ventromedial hypothalamic nucleus (VMN) to and from forebrain and midbrain structures, which are involved in the neuroendocrine regulation of reproduction, were investigated. A retrograde (fluoro-gold [FG]) or an anterograde neural tracer (phaseolus vulgaris-leucoagglutinin [PHA-L]) was injected into the left side of the VMN in ovariectomized rats. Six days after injection with FG or 11 days after injection with PHA-L, brains were fixed and sectioned. After immunohistochemistry, digital images of FG-labeled neural cell bodies (FG-cells) or PHA-L-labeled fibers (PHA-L-

[Neurophysiological investigations of respiratory function].

Neurophysiological assessment of breathing is mandatory for the diagnosis and management of respiratory problems occurring in neuromuscular disorders (neuromuscular complications of critical illness, spinal cord trauma, C4-C5 radiculopathies, phrenic nerve neuropathy, diabetes mellitus, Guillain-Barré syndrome etc...). We review the methods of exploration (principles and normative data) of efferent pathways (phrenic nerve conduction, central motor conduction studies with transcranial magnetic stimulation, diaphragmatic EMG) and afferent pathways (somatosensory evoked potentials of the phrenic

Central connections of the sensory and motor nuclei of the vagus nerve.

Recent morphological and immunohistochemical studies bearing on the central pathways involved in processing vagal afferent information and in modulating the activity of vagal preganglionic neurons are summarized. The nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS), the principal recipient of first order vagal afferent inputs, projects to preganglionic cell groups of both divisions of the autonomic nervous system, to motor nuclei of cranial nerves that supply the face and tongue, to a series of 'relay' nuclei in the brainstem, and to a number of cell groups in the hypothalamus and the limbic region of the

Postcordotomy spontaneous dysesthesias in macaques: recurrence after spinal cord transection.

Monkeys chronically attack the hypoalgesic hindlimb after thoracic contralateral anterolateral cordotomy or hemisection. This compulsive behavior could be induced by innocuous stimulation in the hypoalgesic region, and it also appeared to occur spontaneously. The postcordotomy spontaneous compulsive self-directed behavior was studied in 4 macaques after subsequent upper lumbar crush spinal transection. Despite the paraplegia and bilateral analgesia/anesthesia, this spontaneous abnormal behavior continued to be directed to the same hindlimb as before transection, but not to the opposite hindlim

Functionally distinct evoked and spontaneous neurotransmission operate via a shared pool of synaptic vesicles in viscerosensory afferents.

Viscerosensory afferent neurons of the vagus nerve form excitatory synapses onto second-order neurons in the brainstem nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS). Vagal afferent neurons release glutamate via functionally distinct action potential-dependent (evoked) and -independent (spontaneous) release pathways. Current models remain conflicted regarding whether synapses maintain physically and functionally separate vesicle pools underlying each release pathway or if they are unified via a common pool of vesicles. Most evidence has been derived from neurons in the CNS, so it remains unclear whether

Cross-talk and sensitization of bladder afferent nerves.

The coordination of pelvic physiologic function requires complex integrative sensory pathways that may converge both peripherally and/or centrally. Following a focal, acute irritative or infectious pelvic insult, these same afferent pathways may produce generalized pelvic sensitization or cross-sensitization as we show bi-directionally for the bladder and bowel in an animal model. Single unit bladder afferent recordings following intracolonic irritation reveal direct sensitization to both chemical and mechanical stimuli that's dependent upon both intact bladder sensory (C-fiber) innervation an

Visceral versus somatic pain: an educational review of anatomy and clinical implications.

Somatic and visceral nociceptive signals travel via different pathways to reach the spinal cord. Additionally, signals regulating visceral blood flow and gastrointestinal tract (GIT) motility travel via efferent sympathetic nerves. To offer optimal pain relief and increase GIT motility and blood flow, we should interfere with all these pathways. These include the afferent nerves that travel with the sympathetic trunks, the somatic fibers that innervate the abdominal wall and part of the parietal peritoneum, and the sympathetic efferent fibers. All somatic and visceral afferent neural and sympa

Afferent mechanism in the urinary tract.

Much of the current research on lower urinary tract dysfunction is focused on afferent mechanisms. The main goals are to define and modulate the signaling pathways by which afferent information is generated and conveyed to the central nervous system. Alterations in bladder afferent mechanisms are a potential source of voiding dysfunction and an emerging source of drug targets. Even some established drug therapies such as muscarinic receptor antagonists, as well as emerging therapies such as botulinum toxin type-A, may act partly through afferent mechanisms. This review presents up-to-date find

Reflex regulation of airway smooth muscle tone.

Autonomic nerves in most mammalian species mediate both contractions and relaxations of airway smooth muscle. Cholinergic-parasympathetic nerves mediate contractions, whereas adrenergic-sympathetic and/or noncholinergic parasympathetic nerves mediate relaxations. Sympathetic-adrenergic innervation of human airway smooth muscle is sparse or nonexistent based on histological analyses and plays little or no role in regulating airway caliber. Rather, in humans and in many other species, postganglionic noncholinergic parasympathetic nerves provide the only relaxant innervation of airway smooth musc

The distribution of the cat's carotid sinus nerve afferent and efferent cell bodies using the horseradish peroxidase technique.

The location of both afferent and efferent carotid sinus nerve (CSN) cell bodies in the cat has been determined using the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) technique. Following a limited exposure of the central cut end of the CSN to HRP, labeled sensory ganglion cells were found in both the petrosal and superior ganglia of the IXth cranial nerve. An average of 387 in the former and 16 cells in the latter ganglion were labeled. Retrogradely labeled neurons were found only within the ipsilateral medulla. These cells were both round and spindle shaped and had an average somal diameter of 19 micrometer

Properties of sensory neurons innervating synovial joints.

While it is clear that the TMJ joint has a sensory innervation like other synovial joints, there is little specific information about the function of the innervation of the TMJ. In order to provide a template upon which future studies might build, this article briefly reviews the function of sensory neurons in other synovial joints.

Tonotopic and somatotopic representation in the nucleus basalis of the barn owl, Tyto alba.

We have investigated the somatosensory and auditory representations in the nucleus basalis of the barn owl. In pigeons and finches, the nucleus basalis contains a representation of the beak and an auditory area. In the barn owl, the nucleus basalis also contains a complete somatotopic map of the head and body (as in the budgerigar), with a tonotopically organized auditory area in close proximity to the representation of the facial ruff and the preaural area. Recordings within and around the nucleus basalis revealed predominantly (about 80%) contralateral responses to somatic stimulation. The s

A method for direct measurement of afferent renal nerve activity in unanesthetized rats.

This study introduces a novel method for recording afferent renal nerve activity (ARNA) in unanesthetized rats. A bipolar electrode was surgically implanted on the left renal nerve to record renal nerve activity (RNA), and efferent renal nerve activity (ERNA) was selectively blocked by administering 5% lidocaine via a polyurethane catheter placed over the renal artery-aorta junction. Lidocaine administration reduced RNA by approximately 82% relative to prelidocaine values, enabling the isolation of afferent nerve signals. Intrarenal arterial infusion of increasing doses of bradykinin (10, 20,
