COVID-19-related role disruption and alcohol use disorder risk among adults in South Korea.

This cross-sectional study examined whether COVID-19-related disruption of occupational, social/leisure, and family roles was associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD) risk among adults in South Korea. We analyzed data from 936 adults aged 20-69 years who participated in the 2022 Chungnam Provincial Mental Health Survey. COVID-19-related disruption was assessed across three role domains and categorized as low, moderate, or high. AUD risk was defined using the Korean version of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate adjusted odds r

Integrating hepatology with addiction care for inpatients with alcohol use disorder reduces future liver-related events.

BACKGROUND: Strategies to identify patients with early alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), prior to the development of liver-related decompensated events, and promote alcohol therapy engagement in these patients are urgently needed to stem the rising tide of mortality associated with ALD. METHODS: We compared the rate of incident liver-related decompensating events in hospitalized patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) seen either by an integrated hepatology and addiction care approach or addiction care alone at 2 academic medical centers. Cox proportional hazards regression model and a

The Role of Perceived Stress in the Relation between Childhood Maltreatment and Severity of Alcohol Use Disorder: A Mediation Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Experiences of Childhood Maltreatment (CM) relate to relapse and lower treatment success in Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), one of the most prevalent substance use disorders. However, the exact mechanisms of this relationship still remain unclear. This study examines perceived stress and "drinking to cope with negative affect" (coping) as possible mediators in this relationship. Moreover, it aims at uncovering the differential effects of the subtypes of CM. METHODS: N = 96 individuals (42% women; mean age 41 ± 13 years) including healthy controls and individuals with varying severit

The oral health-related quality of life for individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder - a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The oral health status of an individual can dramatically influence quality of life. Most individuals in Canada report having good oral health, however, this is not true for individuals with developmental disabilities such as fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). The purpose of this study is to compare the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of individuals with FASD and the general population in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Additionally, it aims to suggest ways to improve the oral health status and OHRQoL of these individuals. METHODS: For this cross-sectional study, the Ora

Regional brain volume reductions relate to facial dysmorphology and neurocognitive function in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Individuals with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure can experience significant deficits in cognitive and psychosocial functioning and alterations in brain structure that persist into adulthood. In this report, data from 99 participants collected across three sites (Los Angeles and San Diego, California, and Cape Town, South Africa) were analyzed to examine relationships between brain structure, neurocognitive function, facial morphology, and maternal reports of quantities of alcohol consumption during the first trimester. Across study sites, we found highly significant volume reductions in the FA

Diagnostic utility of two-dimensional speckle tracking imaging in detecting subclinical left ventricular systolic dysfunction in patients with alcohol-related disorders.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related disorders affect 4.5-7.8% of Chinese adults and are known to precipitate alcoholic cardiomyopathy; nevertheless, conventional left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) often remains within the normal range in early disease, so a more sensitive marker of incipient systolic injury is needed. This study aims to quantify the diagnostic performance of two-dimensional speckle tracking imaging (2D-STI) for detecting sub-clinical left ventricular systolic dysfunction in patients with alcohol-related disorders. METHODS: Consecutive 50 in-patients (100% male, age 47.21±4.57

Gender-related associations between psychiatric disorders and alcohol use disorder: Findings from the french "Mental health in the general population" survey.

Women with alcohol use disorder (AUD) might be particularly vulnerable to psychiatric comorbidities. However, population surveys have yielded disparate findings. We used data from the French Mental Health in the General Population survey to investigate gender-related risks of psychiatric comorbidities associated with AUD. A cross-sectional survey based on face-to-face interviews, including the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview, was conducted among 38,717 subjects. Logistic regression models were used to assess risks of psychiatric comorbidities associated with AUD. After adjustment

Concordance between gambling disorder diagnoses in the DSM-IV and DSM-5: Results from the National Epidemiological Survey of Alcohol and Related Disorders.

The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-5) eliminates the committing illegal acts criterion and reduces the threshold for a diagnosis of gambling disorder to 4 of 9 criteria. This study compared the DSM-5 "4 of 9" classification system to the "5 of 10" DSM-IV system, as well as other permutations (i.e., just lowing the threshold to 4 criteria or just eliminating the illegal acts criterion) in 43,093 respondents to the National Epidemiological Survey of Alcohol and Related Conditions. Contingency management to promote treatment engagement in comorbid alcohol use disorder and alcohol-related liver disease: Findings from a pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related liver disease (ARLD) is a leading cause of preventable death and health inequalities. Evidence-based interventions for comorbid alcohol use disorder (AUD) and ARLD remain limited, and only a small proportion of this clinical population engages with treatment. There is a need to improve patient outcomes by bridging this gap through novel, person-centred interventions. Contingency management (CM) is a psychosocial intervention that involves gradual, increasing incentives upon the completion of treatment-related goals, such as treatment attendance.
