Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) first emerged in China in November 2019. Most governments have responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by imposing a lockdown. Some evidence suggests that a period of isolation might have led to a spike in alcohol misuse, and in the case of patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD), social isolation can favour lapse and relapse. The aim of our position paper is to provide specialists in the alcohol addiction field, in psychopharmacology, gastroenterology and in internal medicine, with appropriate tools to better manage patients with AUD and COVID-19,considering so

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption and experiencing a concussion are positively correlated. Concussion history has not been examined previously in any alcohol field study (i.e., conducted in a natural setting).
OBJECTIVE: To better understand the relationship between concussion history and alcohol consumption.
METHODS: We conducted two anonymous field studies among a 2015 sample of bar patrons (N = 544; 62.5% males) in a college town to assess concussion history and two alcohol consumption measures: (1) breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) levels and (2) hazardous drinking scores (based on the A

INTRODUCTION: Reports indicate that up to 60% of pregnant women in Ireland consume alcohol and Ireland may have the third highest prevalence of fetal alcohol syndrome in the world. We sought objective evidence of alcohol intake and the acceptability of urinary alcohol screening.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a multicenter, prospective study conducted at one urban and two semirural maternity units. Pregnant women at their first visit (≈13 weeks gestation) were invited to participate. Urinary samples were obtained with individual consent. Samples were anonymized and tested for alcohol and ethy

Aiming to measure the prevalence of risky behaviors, familial disturbances and their interrelations, a probabilistic sample of 1904 teenagers (aged 15.5 +/- 1.8 years, 42% male) was surveyed using and anonymous and self applied questionnaire. Fifty two percent of the sample smoked, 54% consumed alcohol, 12.5% marihuana, 3.2% amphetamines, 2.3% cocaine, 0.8% inhalants and 5.3% other drugs. Thirty two percent smoked frequently (monthly, weekly or daily); frequent alcohol, marihuana, amphetamines, cocaine and other drug consumption was found in 15.5, 5, 1.4, 0.4 and 1.4% of the sample. We conducted a cross sectional study of 3958 college students in north of Iran in 2005 with an anonymous questionnaire that was adapted from the questionnaires used in "Monitoring the future". Three thousand seven hundred students responded (93.5%). Lifetime prevalence use of ecstasy, opium and cannabis was 4.3%, 2.7% and 2.4% respectively. The prevalence of current cigarette smoking was 19.5%. After the logistic regression, the factors influencing ecstasy use were use of other illicit drugs, alcohol and cigarette smoking (P<0.000), widow or divorced (ρ=0.007) and higher educational background

OBJECTIVE: The U.S. military conducts health screenings of service members three to six months after they return from combat deployments. This population health program includes a modified version of the Two-Item Conjoint Screen (TICS), which is widely used in primary care to screen for alcohol misuse. Rates of referral in the military for alcohol treatment are very low, and the utility of these screening questions in predicting serious alcohol-related behaviors is unknown.
METHODS: Anonymous surveys were collected from 6,527 U.S. Army soldiers who were screened three to four months after ret

Alcohol dependence is a chronic, relapsing biobehavioral disease mediated by various parts of the brain, including reward systems, memory circuits, and the prefrontal cortex. It is characterized by loss of the ability to drink alcohol in moderation and continued drinking despite negative consequences. The alcohol withdrawal syndrome is a common but not universal diagnostic feature of alcohol dependence. Benzodiazepine detoxification of the alcohol withdrawal syndrome prevents the development of withdrawal seizures and delirium tremens, and makes patients more comfortable, which promotes engage

BACKGROUND: When last assessed in 2013, all Canadian liver transplant programs required 6 months of abstinence from alcohol. New studies have questioned the validity of this policy. Moreover, with recreational cannabis now legal in Canada, more transplant candidates may use cannabis. Given these changes, our objective was to obtain an understanding of current Canadian practices regarding liver transplantation and candidates with addiction or alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, or opiate use.
METHODS: Electronic surveys were distributed to the medical directors of all seven adult liver transplant prog

A focus group of Reno area Gamblers Anonymous members identified four psychological traits contributing to risk for problem gambling, including: Escape, Esteem, Excess and Excitement. A panel of four experts authored 240 Likert-type items to measure these traits. By design, none of the items explicitly referred to gambling activities. Study 1 narrowed the field of useful items by employing a quasi-experimental design which compared the answers of Reno area Gamblers Anonymous members (N = 39) to a control sample (N = 34). Study 2 submitted successful items, plus new items authored with the know

Background: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) can cause adverse physical and neurocognitive fetal development. Numerous underlying mechanisms of PAE-risk have been hypothesized; however, these have predominantly focused on health-, interpersonal-, and social-related factors. Evidence suggests that stable personality traits, such as behavioral activation (BA) and behavioral inhibition (BI) may contribute toward risk of alcohol misuse. We posit that BA and BI may therefore increase risk of PAE. The potential of BA and BI to underpin both pre- and during-pregnancy alcohol use was thus explored in a

PURPOSE: Studies suggest alcohol and/or other substance misuse may develop after bariatric surgery (BS), but findings are not consistent or conclusive.
PROCEDURES: This cross-sectional online survey investigated alcohol and other substance use, via a modified version of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test, before and after bariatric surgery, compared to a non-bariatric surgery sample. Data were anonymously collected via Qualtrics from adults who reported alcohol or substance use (BS, n = 328; non-BS, n = 292).
FINDINGS: Problematic alcohol, opioid, amphetamine, and cannabis use wer

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) remains high despite international guidelines recommending alcohol abstinence during pregnancy. This poses a significant public health concern, as PAE is known to have harmful effects on fetal development and is the cause of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Enhancing knowledge and shifting attitudes toward PAE may help reduce its occurrence, but evidence remains limited. This study examined the impact of an educational intervention on knowledge and attitudes toward PAE among pregnant and recently pregnant women.

AIM: To describe recent trends in hospital admission rates for alcoholic liver disease (ALD) in the Veneto region of Italy.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study is based on anonymous hospital discharge records (HDRs) for 2000-2017 from all public and accredited private hospitals operating within the context of the Regional (Veneto) Health Services that are conserved in National/Regional database. It examined the HDR's of all the hospitalizations of the residents of the Veneto region that were registered under an ALD diagnosis. These were classified under three subheadings: acute alcoholic
