Allostatic Load and Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between allostatic load, as an estimate of chronic stress, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of nuMoM2b (Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: Monitoring Mothers-to-Be), a prospective observational cohort study. Our primary exposure was dichotomous high allostatic load in the first trimester, defined as 4 or more of 12 biomarkers in the "worst" quartile. The primary outcome was a composite adverse pregnancy outcome: hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), preterm birth, small for gestational age (SGA), and stillbirth

Childhood abuse and depression in adulthood: The mediating role of allostatic load.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic experiences during childhood are considered a major risk factor for depression in adulthood. Childhood trauma may induce physiological dysregulation with long-term effects of increased allostatic load until adulthood, which may lead to depression. Thus, our aim was to investigate whether allostatic load - which represents a multi-system measure of physiological dysregulation - mediates the association between childhood trauma and adult depression. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 324 depressed inpatients participating in the Munich Antidepressant Response Signature

Self Reported Childhood Difficulties, Adult Multimorbidity and Allostatic Load. A Cross-Sectional Analysis of the Norwegian HUNT Study.

BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity receives increasing scientific attention. So does the detrimental health impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACE). Aetiological pathways from ACE to complex disease burdens are under investigation. In this context, the concept of allostatic overload is relevant, denoting the link between chronic detrimental stress, widespread biological perturbations and disease development. This study aimed to explore associations between self-reported childhood quality, biological perturbations and multimorbidity in adulthood. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We included 37 612 partici

Race, race-based discrimination, and health outcomes among African Americans.

Persistent and vexing health disadvantages accrue to African Americans despite decades of work to erase the effects of race discrimination in this country. Participating in these efforts, psychologists and other social scientists have hypothesized that African Americans' continuing experiences with racism and discrimination may lie at the root of the many well-documented race-based physical health disparities that affect this population. With newly emerging methodologies in both measurement of contextual factors and functional neuroscience, an opportunity now exists to cleave together a compre

Do stress reactions cause abdominal obesity and comorbidities?

'Stress' embraces the reaction to a multitude of poorly defined factors that disturb homeostasis or allostasis. In this overview, the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic nervous system have been utilized as objective measurements of stress reactions. Although long-term activation of the sympathetic nervous system is followed by primary hypertension, consequences of similar activation of the HPA axis have not been clearly defined. The focus of this overview is to examine whether or not repeated activation of these two stress centres may be involved in

The association between allostatic load and lymphedema in breast cancer survivors.

PURPOSE: Allostatic load, a measure of physiological dysregulation secondary to chronic exposure to socioenvironmental stressors, is associated with 30-day postoperative complications and mortality in patients with breast cancer. This study aimed to examine the association between allostatic load (AL) at diagnosis and development of breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL). METHODS: Patients aged 18 years or older who received surgical treatment for stage I-III breast cancer between 2012 and 2020 were identified from The Ohio State University Cancer Registry. AL was calculated using biomarkers

Characterization of depression subtypes and their relationships to stressor profiles among middle-aged and older adults: An analysis of the canadian longitudinal study on aging (CLSA).

The current diagnostic criteria for depression do not sufficiently reflect its heterogeneous clinical presentations. Associations between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), allostatic load (AL), and depression subtypes have not been extensively studied. Depression subtypes were determined based on clinical presentations, and their relationships to AL biomarkers and ACEs were elucidated in a sample of middle-aged and older adults. Participants from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging who screened positive for depression were included (n = 3966). Depression subtypes, AL profiles and ACE

Association of allostatic load with overall survival in epithelial ovarian cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Elevated allostatic load (AL), an integrated, cumulative marker of physiologic damage due to socioenvironmental stress, is associated with increased mortality in patients with breast, lung, and other cancers. The relationship between allostatic load and mortality in ovarian cancer patients remains unknown. We examined the relationship between allostatic load and overall survival in ovarian cancer patients. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from 201 patients enrolled in a prospective observational ovarian cancer cohort study at a National Cancer Institute-designated Comp

Chronic Physiologic Effects of Stress Among Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Adults: Results From the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

OBJECTIVE: Social disadvantage is associated with markers of physiological dysregulation, which is linked to disease trajectories. Chronic experiences with discrimination are thought to result in the accumulation of physiological "wear and tear" known as allostatic load (AL) among socially marginalized populations such as sexual minorities. Using a nationally representative US sample, we examined whether (1) people who self-identified as homosexual or bisexual display higher levels of AL than heterosexual individuals and (2) subgroups of sexual identity would further differ from each other as

Early life adversity and adult biological risk profiles.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether there is a relationship between early life adversity (ELA) and biological parameters known to predict health risks and to examine the extent to which circumstances in midlife mediate this relationship. METHODS: We analyzed data on 1180 respondents from the biomarker subsample of the second wave of the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States. ELA assessments were based on childhood socioeconomic disadvantage (i.e., on welfare, perceived low income, and less educated parents) and other stressors (e.g., parental death, parental divorce, and pa

The impact of allostatic load on maternal sympathovagal functioning in stressful child contexts: implications for problematic parenting.

The present study applies an allostatic load framework to an examination of the relationship between maternal psychosocial risk factors and maladaptive parenting behaviors. Specifically, the implications of low socioeconomic status and maternal depressive symptoms for maternal sympathovagal functioning during young children's distress were examined, as well as whether that functioning was, in turn, associated with maternal insensitivity, hostility, intrusiveness, and disengagement during mother-child dyadic interaction. Consistent with an allostatic framework, three patterns of sympathovagal f

Acute exercise as active inference in chronic musculoskeletal pain, effects on gait kinematics and muscular activity in patients and healthy participants: a study protocol for a randomised controlled laboratory trial.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic musculoskeletal pain is a highly prevalent, complex and distressing condition that may negatively affect all domains of life. In view of an active inference framework, and resting on the concept of allostasis, human movement per se becomes a prerequisite for health and well-being while chronic pain becomes a sign of a system unable to attenuate an allostatic load. Previous studies on different subgroups of chronic pain conditions have demonstrated alterations in gait kinematics and muscle activity, indicating shared disturbances in the motor system from long-term allostat

The neurobiology of stress: from serendipity to clinical relevance.

The hormones and other physiological agents that mediate the effects of stress on the body have protective and adaptive effects in the short run and yet can accelerate pathophysiology when they are over-produced or mismanaged. Here we consider the protective and damaging effects of these mediators as they relate to the immune system and brain. 'Stress' is a principle focus, but this term is rather imprecise. Therefore, the article begins by noting two new terms, allostasis and allostatic load that are intended to supplement and clarify the meanings of 'stress' and 'homeostasis'. For the immune

Pre-deployment prediction of partial and full PTSD in a French military cohort.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), in its partial or full forms, is frequently observed in military populations. It is therefore important to predict the risk of PTSD prior to deployment. OBJECTIVE: Since elevated allostatic load markers have been described in PTSD, we investigated whether these alterations pre-exist before PTSD onset. Our objective was to explore the ability of four allostatic load markers (urinary and blood cortisol, BDNF and 8-iso-PGF2α) to predict partial/full PTSD onset after a 6-month deployment. METHODS: We conducted a prospective study in a French mil

Understanding the role of age and U.S. acculturation factors on the relationship between allostatic load and cancer mortality risk in Hispanic Americans.

PURPOSE: Despite growing recognition of stress-related health inequities, the role of nativity and acculturation in shaping the relationship between chronic stress and cancer outcomes among Hispanic populations remains poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to examine whether nativity factors (United States (US) citizenship status and length of time residing in the US modify the association between allostatic load (AL), a measure of chronic physiologic stress, and cancer mortality among Hispanic adults. METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort analysis using data from the National

Outdoor air pollution, road traffic noise, and allostatic load in children aged 6-11 years: evidence from six European cohorts.

Emerging evidence suggests that exposure to air pollutants and road traffic noise triggers stress responses, which mediate physiological responses in multiple organs and tissues. However, epidemiological study in children is sparse. We aimed to evaluate whether outdoor air pollution and road traffic noise are associated with physiological response measured by allostatic load in children. We studied 919 children aged 6-11 years from the HELIX (Human Early Life Exposome) cohort in 6 European countries with 19 biomarkers assessed in four physiological systems-cardiovascular, metabolic, immune/inf

Association Between Uveal Melanoma and Allostatic Load.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Allostatic load (AL) is a measure of chronic stress that is associated with worse cancer outcomes. The purpose of this retrospective cohort study was to investigate the relationship between AL and uveal melanoma (UM) clinical features. PATIENTS AND METHODS: AL score was calculated as a composite of ten biomarkers in 111 patients with UM from the University of Illinois Hospital. One point was assigned to an AL score for each biomarker based on predetermined cutoff values. Linear and logistic regression analyses evaluated the relationship between AL score and several tumor clini

Mediators of the relationship between socioeconomic status and allostatic load in the Chicago Health, Aging, and Social Relations Study (CHASRS).

Low socioeconomic status (SES) has been associated with higher levels of allostatic load (AL). Posited mechanisms for this association include stress, personality, psychosocial variables, coping, social networks, and health behaviors. This study examines whether these variables explain the SES-AL relationship in a population-based sample of 208 51- to 69-year-old White, Black, and Hispanic adults in the Chicago Health, Aging, and Social Relations Study. AL was based on nine markers of physiological dysregulation. SES was inversely associated with a composite measure of AL; hostility and poor s

Parametrial adipose tissue and metabolic dysfunctions induced by fructose-rich diet in normal and neonatal-androgenized adult female rats.

Hyperandrogenemia predisposes an organism toward developing impaired insulin sensitivity. The aim of our study was to evaluate endocrine and metabolic effects during early allostasis induced by a fructose-rich diet (FRD) in normal (control; CT) and neonatal-androgenized (testosterone propionate; TP) female adult rats. CT and TP rats were fed either a normal diet (ND) or an FRD for 3 weeks immediately before the day of study, which was at age 100 days. Energy intake, body weight (BW), parametrial (PM) fat characteristics, and endocrine/metabolic biomarkers were then evaluated. Daily energy inta
