Crossover study of amputee stair ascent and descent biomechanics using Genium and C-Leg prostheses with comparison to non-amputee control.

This study was a randomized crossover of stair ambulation of Transfemoral Amputees (TFAs) using the Genium and C-Leg prosthetic knees. TFAs typically have difficulty ascending and descending stairs, limiting community mobility. The objective of this study was to determine the relative efficacy of the Genium and C-Leg prostheses for stair ascent and descent, and their absolute efficacy relative to non-amputees. Twenty TFAs, and five non-amputees participated in the study. TFAs were randomized to begin the study with the Genium or C-Leg prosthesis. Informed consent was obtained from all particip

Care for Ukrainian Conflict Amputees: A Gap Analysis With Recommendations.

Ukrainians have undergone over 100,000 limb amputations, according to United nations reporting in February, 2026; far surpassing the approximately 2,100 U.S. war-related amputees from the Global War on Terror. To meet the needs of war amputees and their families, Ukraine must coordinate national resources, allied nations, humanitarian organizations, charitable foundations, and private industry. We identified major systemic deficits across all stages of amputee care. Key gaps include overload of the trauma and evacuation system, insufficient early and integrated rehabilitation, inadequate prost

An Experimental Approach to Induce Trips in Lower-Limb Amputees.

Reestablishing balance after a trip is challenging for lower-limb amputees and often results in a fall. The effectiveness of reestablishing balance following a trip depends on factors such as amputation level (transtibial or transfemoral) or which limb is tripped (prosthetic or sound/lead or trailing). Understanding the recovery responses can help identify strategies to avoid a trip becoming a fall and what trip-response functionality could be designed into a prosthesis. This study presents an experimental approach for inducing unexpected trips in individuals with amputation. Tripping was manu

Risk Factors for Prolonged Opioid Consumption in Lower Extremity Amputees.

UNLABELLED: Extremity amputation is a common procedure performed to treat a variety of different problems and affects quality of life in a number of ways. In addition to acute postoperative pain, amputations have been shown to cause chronic pain that is often neuropathic in many amputees. This study sought to better characterize the role of opioids in postoperative pain control in lower extremity amputees. METHODS: Patients who underwent lower extremity amputation between 2010 and 2018 were identified in a national insurance-claims database using ICD-9, ICD-10, and CPT codes. Patient demograp

Measuring Balance Abilities of Transtibial Amputees Using Multiattribute Utility Theory.

BACKGROUND: Berg Balance Scale (BBS) can be considered the standard for assessment of functional balance but has a noted ceiling effect in active transtibial amputees (TTAs). Development of ceiling-free measures based on quantitative measurement techniques that is suitable for patients in any experience levels, yet sensitive enough to capture improvements in any stage of prosthetic rehabilitation, is needed. Research Question. Does a scoring scheme based on Multiattribute Utility (MAU) theory assess balance abilities of multileveled TTAs comparable to BBS? METHODS: A case-control study includ

Characterisation of Phantom Limb Pain in Traumatic Lower-Limb Amputees.

INTRODUCTION: There is no diagnosis for phantom limb pain (PLP), and its investigation is based on anamnesis, which is subject to several biases. Therefore, it is important to describe and standardize the diagnostic methodology for PLP. OBJECTIVE: To characterise PLP and, secondarily, to determine predictors for its diagnosis. Methodology. This is a cross-sectional study involving patients with unilateral traumatic lower-limb amputation aged over 18 years. Those with clinical decompensation or evidence of disease, trauma, or surgery in the central or peripheral nervous system were excluded. S

Osseointegrated Transcutaneous Device for Amputees: A Pilot Large Animal Model.

Traditional above-the-knee amputation prosthetics utilize a stump-socket interface that is well-known for skin/socket problems, sitting difficulty, disuse osteopenia, and increased work of ambulation. As a result, we evaluated a novel osseointegrated transcutaneous implant in a large animal. The implant was designed to promote osseointegration at the bone-implant interface and minimize complications. As proof of concept, four Dorset sheep underwent a two-stage surgery for forelimb placement of an osseointegrated transcutaneous implant utilizing Compress® technology (Biomet, Inc., Warsaw, IN).

Increased cardiovascular disease mortality rates in traumatic lower limb amputees.

We evaluated the 24-year mortality rates of male traumatic lower limb amputees (n = 201) of the Israeli army, wounded between 1948 and 1974 compared with a cohort sample representing the general population (n = 1,832). Mortality rates were significantly higher (21.9% vs 12.1%, p <0.001) in amputees than in controls. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality was the main cause for this difference. The prevalence of selected risk factors for CVD was determined in 101 surviving amputees (aged 50 to 65 years) and a sample of the controls (n = 96) matched by age and ethnic origin. Amputees had higher
