Radiographic lumbosacral vertebral abnormalities and constipation in cats.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Lumbosacral intervertebral disk disease (IVDD) in cats usually develops concurrent with constipation, spondylosis deformans, and sacralization. However, the prevalence of lumbar IVDD in cats was considered low, and there was less information on the incidence of non-traumatic lumbosacral vertebral abnormalities that may affect large bowel dysfunction. This study aimed to retrospectively investigate the relationship between non-traumatic lumbosacral vertebral abnormalities, both congenital and acquired, and large bowel dysfunction in cats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 3108 cats

Distribution of androgen receptor immunoreactive cells in the adrenal glands of Hystrix javanica.

BACKGROUND: The adrenal glands play a vital role in regulating endocrine functions by producing corticosteroids, mineralocorticoids, and androgens. Adrenal androgens contribute to overall systemic androgen levels, primarily through interactions with androgen receptors (ARs) within the gland. Although the distribution of AR has been studied in various mammalian species, no research has yet focused on the Sunda porcupines (Hystrix javanica), a species of considerable ecological importance in Indonesia. AIM: This study aimed to investigate the endocrinal regulation of the adrenal gland of Sunda

Casting techniques of equine hand and foot synovial cavities for the development of teaching models.

Horse joints are common sites of injury, orthopedic issues, and surgical and clinical interventions. For this reason, a thorough understanding of joint anatomy, including the boundaries of their recesses and their relationships with other structures of the locomotor apparatus, is essential. This study aimed to develop cast anatomical models of the synovial structures of the equine hand and foot, compare different casting materials and visualization methods, and identify the most suitable technique for enhancing the understanding of equine limb arthrology. Additionally, an anatomical descriptio

Ongoing evolution of urinary tract disorders in dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius): a comprehensive illustrated sonographic overview.

In practice, urinary tract disorders are increasingly reported in dromedary camels, particularly in regions where environmental stress and limited resources prevail. Our primary goal in writing this review was to provide a simple, accessible, and practical data tailored for veterinary clinicians working with dromedary camels in remote and resource-limited environments. These veterinarians often operate under harsh conditions such as pastoral regions of North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of South Asia, with very basic tools and limited access to advanced diagnostic equipment. Therefore, w

Lymnaea schirazensis, an overlooked snail distorting fascioliasis data: genotype, phenotype, ecology, worldwide spread, susceptibility, applicability.

BACKGROUND: Lymnaeid snails transmit medical and veterinary important trematodiases, mainly fascioliasis. Vector specificity of fasciolid parasites defines disease distribution and characteristics. Different lymnaeid species appear linked to different transmission and epidemiological patterns. Pronounced susceptibility differences to absolute resistance have been described among lymnaeid populations. When assessing disease characteristics in different endemic areas, unexpected results were obtained in studies on lymnaeid susceptibility to Fasciola. We undertook studies to understand this disea

Breed-specific coxofemoral morphometry in three dog breeds: Comparative evaluation of radiography and CT for orthopedic planning.

The study was designed to compare femoral and acetabular morphometric parameters obtained via radiography and computed tomography (CT) in German Shepherd Dogs (GSDs), Labrador Retrievers (LABs), and Indian Pariah Dog, with the goals of identifying modality-specific differences, evaluating bilateral symmetry, and informing Orthopaedic implant planning. A total of 72 cadaveric specimens (24 per breed) underwent standardized radiography and CT. Fourteen morphometric parameters, including version angle (VA), femoral neck-shaft angle (FNA), femoral neck diameter (FND), canal flare index (CFI), and

The comparative morphology of the oral cavity glands in captive South African painted dogs (Lycaon pictus pictus) and captive fennec foxes (Vulpes zerda) (Carnivora: Canidae).

BACKGROUND: The African painted dog is classified as a relic canid lineage, inhabiting areas south of the Sahara. The fennec fox is the smallest member of the Canidae family, found in the Arabian Peninsula and northern Sahara. METHODS: The gross anatomy and light microscopic examination of the oral cavity glands were studied in five adult captive South African painted dogs and five adult captive fennec foxes from the Wroclaw Zoological Garden, Poland. In this research, the zygomatic gland, monostomatic sublingual gland, polystomatic sublingual gland, mandibular gland, and parotid gland were e

Gross anatomical adaptations of the craniolateral forearm muscles in Tamandua mexicana (Xenarthra: Myrmecophagidae): development of accessory muscles and rete mirabile for its arterial supply.

The northern tamandua (Tamandua mexicana) is a xenarthran mammal with a distribution from Mexico to Peru. This species arrives to wildlife care centres due to illegal trafficking and attacks by domestic dogs, both of which are situations where the northern tamandua's thoracic limbs (forelimbs) can be affected. As such, it is necessary to have anatomical studies that allow us to perform better medical and surgical procedures. Among these, studies about the musculoskeletal system also aid in the muscular reconstructions of extinct species. The aim of this study was to characterize the craniolate

A practical protocol to prepare paraffin-embedded whole tick histology sections.

Ticks are important ectoparasites that are capable of transmitting multiple classes of pathogens and are currently linked with many emerging tick-borne diseases worldwide. With increasing occurrences of tick-borne diseases in both humans and veterinary species, there is a continuous need to further our understanding of ticks and the pathogens they transmit. Whole tick histology provides a full scope of the tick internal anatomy, allowing researchers to examine multiple organs of interest in a single section. This is in contrast to other techniques that are more commonly utilized in tick-borne

3T high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging, conventional ultrasonography and ultrasound biomicroscopy of the normal canine eye.

BACKGROUND: Advances in MRI coil technology and increased availability of high-field MRI in veterinary medicine enable the acquisition of images of increasingly high spatial resolution while preserving signal-to-noise ratio. The purpose of the present study was to compare 3T high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI) with ultrasound (US) and ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) in the normal canine eye, to assess its potential to depict normal ocular anatomy. RESULTS: HR-MRI was compared with US and UBM in 10 eyes from 10 healthy beagle dogs. Ocular structures (cornea, anterior chamber, iri

Machine-driven vs. manual nickel-titanium instrumentation of canine teeth in dogs: a high resolution micro-CT evaluation of canal geometry and obturation quality.

Root canal treatment in canine teeth of dogs represents a technically demanding procedure due to complex root canal anatomy and large canal dimensions. The present study aimed to compare different endodontic instrumentation techniques and to evaluate their effects on canal geometry, obturation quality, and procedural safety using high-resolution micro-computed tomography (micro-CT). In addition, the diagnostic value of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in the assessment of postoperative findings was investigated. Thirty extracted canine teeth were randomly assigned to three groups (n = 10)

A review of spontaneous bone metastases in domestic and laboratory animals.

Bone metastases cause significant morbidity and ultimately death in some human cancer patients. Although experimental animal models of skeletal metastases have been invaluable for investigating the molecular mechanisms of cancer progression and growth in bones, few of these models recapitulate the heterogeneous nature of bone metastases observed in humans. Animals with naturally occurring cancers have been proposed as ideal and unique models for human cancer research. From this, understanding the incidence, histologic features, clinical presentation, and response to therapy of spontaneous bone
