PURPOSE: Advances in minimally invasive therapies and novel targeted chemotherapeutics have provided a breadth of options for the management of renal masses. Management of renal angiomyolipoma has not been reviewed in a comprehensive fashion in more than a decade. We provide an updated review of the current diagnosis and management strategies for renal angiomyolipoma.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a PubMed(®) search of all available literature for renal or kidney angiomyolipoma. Further sources were identified in the reference lists of identified articles. We specifically reviewed case

OVERVIEW: Although angiomyolipoma (AML) is a relatively rare entity, it is the most common benign mesenchymal neoplasm of the kidney.
THE AIM OF THIS STUDY: To highlight the clinicopathological characteristics of AML and to assess the role of Human Melanoma Black-45 (HMB-45), Melan-A, smooth muscle actin (SMA), S-100 and cytokeratin in its diagnosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 15 cases of AML. Clinical and radiological data were retrieved from the archival files and all cases were subjected to a histopathological evaluation as well as immunohistochemical staining for HMB-45, M

Angiomyolipoma of the liver is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor, comprising three tissue components: blood vessels, smooth muscles, and adipose cells. Depending on the predominance of these components, tumors are categorized into various types, out of which the myomatous variant is the most rare. Most of these tumors are detected incidentally and are solitary when discovered. Definitive preoperative diagnosis is often difficult because the radiological appearance of hepatic angiomyolipoma can be non-specific and varied. This is because the distribution and relative proportion of the three tissu

Angiomyolipomas are benign mesenchymal tumours originating from the kidney and adrenals. They are rare tumours that can be sporadic and isolated or occur as a part of tuberous sclerosis. These tumours have a high content in the cells, which is pathognomonic for diagnosis using ultrasonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Atypical angiomyolipomas occur with excessive smooth muscle cells and less adipose tissue, and are sensitive to immunohistochemistry studies. Most of these lesions are detected incidentally but some can cause back and abdominal pains if large in size. L

Segmental neurofibromatosis (SN) is a rare disorder characterized by neurofibromas or neurofibromas with café-au-lait spots limited to one region of the body without crossing the midline. Renal angiomyolipomas (AMLs) are rare benign neoplasms usually found in association with tuberous sclerosis (TS). Similar to neurofibromatosis (NF), TS has a high spontaneous mutation rate and a family history often is absent. Although both are autosomal dominant diseases with neural involvement, there are few reports in the literature demonstrating a link between the 2 disorders. We report a case of SN assoc

Renal angiomyolipoma is a distinctive benign neoplasm that occurs either sporadically or in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex. A 45-year-old woman was admitted with history offlank pain and vomiting. There were no signs suggestive of tuberous sclerosis either in the patient or her family. At operation, she had a left renal mass with nephrolithiasis and hydronephrosis. Histopathology revealed epithelioid angiomyolipoma of the left kidney with chronic pyelonephritis. Immunohistochemistry confirmed the diagnosis of angiomyolipoma. This case is presented to highlight the epithelioid variant

BACKGROUND: Epithelioid angiomyolipoma is a recently recognized pathologic entity. The occurrence of epithelioid angiomyolipoma in thefemale genital tract is rare.
CASE: A case of uterine epithelioid angiomyolipoma occurred in a young woman without tuberous sclerosis and underwent an early recurrence with lymph node metastasis.
CONCLUSION: Uterine epithelioid angiomyolipoma should be considered in young women with a tumor exhibiting high intratumoral linear vascularity and aneurysmal dilation.

We describe a case of oncocytic angiomyolipoma composed of polygonal eosinophilic cells, that shares many features with renal oncocytoma. It was composed of alveolar structures, with accumulation of foamy histiocyte-like cells surrounding large globules of acellular, nonfibrillary, densely eosinophilic basal membrane-like substance. Immunohistochemically, there was focal reactivity for HMB45 and negativity for the epithelial markers. Oncocytic angiomyolipoma lacks the atypical features of the recently described epithelioid variant of angiomyolipoma. None of the reported cases have been associa

Angiomyolipoma is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor of the liver. We present the case of a 32-year-old female patient that seeks medical consultation to confirm pregnancy. Ultrasound was performed and a hyperechoic lesion was detected in the left lobe of the liver. CT scan showed a heterogenic mass arising from the left lobe of the liver, fine needle aspiration biopsy was performed and diagnosis of liposarcoma was made. A laparotomy was done and a left lateral segmentectomy performed, postoperative course was uneventful. Histology and immunohistochemical analysis of the tumor revealed classical

A case of an angiomyolipoma of the large intestine occurring in a 55-year-old man without evidence of tuberous sclerosis is reported. Endoscopically, the lesion resembled a sessile adenomatous polyp. The tumor measured 1 cm. Histologic examination revealed a lesion composed predominantly of spindle and epithelioid cells with significant nuclear atypia. Mitoses were rare. The tumor was strongly positive for HMB-45, CD68, vimentin, desmin, and smooth muscle actin. Rare scattered cells reacted with CD34. No residual tumor was found in the resected colon.

Angiomyolipomas are rare lesions that occur most commonly in the kidney, but also can occur in the liver and rarely, in the lymph nodes. Its rare association with tuberous sclerosis has been suggested, but never proved. We report a patient with multiple visceral angiomyolipomas as well as visceral vessel aneurysms and tuberous sclerosis. The association of the three lesions suggests a possible common connective-tissue defect.

An unusual example of angiomyolipoma, which presented as a bulging mass on the right lumbar region of a newborn baby, is presented. The case described is the first report of a newborn with an unusually located angiomyolipoma. The most common predilection sites are the renal parenchyma and the retroperitoneum. However, most of the patients described are adults, and to the best of our knowledge no newborn patient has previously been reported in the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Renal angiomyolipomas (AMLs) are vascular tumours that while histologically benign, carry a risk of rupture and potentially life-threatening haemorrhage. Selective arterial embolisation (SAE) has been demonstrated as effective treatment; however, given most tumours are asymptomatic, the challenge facing the radiologist is selection of which AML should undergo treatment. This study considers presence and size of intratumoural aneurysm, to advance the readers treatment decision-making beyond historical size criteria.
METHODS: Retrospective cohort analysis of all SAE-treated AML at

Angiomyolipomas (AMLs) are triphasic tumors (smooth muscle, vascular and adipocytic components) with myomelanocytic differentiation, arising most commonly in the kidneys, which can show predominant epithelioid morphology and fat-predominant or fat-poor variants. Fat-predominant AMLs can show areas of hypercellularity and lipoblast-like cells, and these features can mimic well-differentiated liposarcoma (WDLS). To date, only one documented metastatic epithelioid AML showed unequivocal MDM2 amplification by fluorescence in situ hybridization. We describe our findings in a series of 35 AMLs inclu

An angiomyolipoma (AML) is a benign mesenchymal tumor characterized by proliferation of mature vessels, smooth muscle, and adipose tissue. AMLs most commonly occur in the kidney but have been reported in a variety of extrarenal sites. Mediastinal AMLs are extremely rare. We herein present a case of a large AML of the mediastinum that was successfully treated by thoracoscopic resection.

Otolaryngologists are called upon to evaluate and treat sinonasal masses discovered incidentally on imaging studies. Although common conditions such as sinonasal polyps and mucus retention cysts predominate, it is prudent practice to formulate a differential diagnosis to identify unusual conditions. We present a case of a maxillary sinus mass in a 78-year-old man that was discovered incidentally on brain imaging and subsequently identified on biopsy as an angiomyolipoma (AML). AMLs are benign hamartomatous tumors that rarely occur in extrarenal locations. Only a few cases have been reported in

OBJECTIVE: To present a new case of an uncommon complication of a benign renal tumor. To our knowledge, there are only few published cases of benign renal angiomyolipoma (AML) presenting with tumor thrombus in females. Epithelioid angiomyolipoma is a recently described rare variant of renal angiomyolipoma. It can occur in patients with or without tuberous sclerosis, and may potentially be malignant. Benign renal angiomyolipoma AML rarely presents with evidence of extension into the renal vein, inferior vena cava (IVC) or atrium. We report a case of a benign renal AML with a tumor thrombus to t
