Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors are now in widespread use for the treatment of essential and renovascular hypertension. Consequently, angioedema, an uncommon complication of ACE inhibitor therapy is being encountered with increasing frequency. Since ACE inhibitor angioedema predominantly involves the face, lips, oral cavity, and occasionally the larynx the otolaryngologist is often consulted to evaluate affected patients. Treatment ranges from simple cessation of the drug to emergent airway intervention. The pertinent pharmacologic properties of ACE inhibitors and the pathophysi

PURPOSE: Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEis) are commonly prescribed antihypertensive medications. They also possess antiplatelet properties. The aim of this single-center retrospective observational cohort study was to analyze whether intake of ACEis may increase the risk of incomplete aneurysm occlusion after this treatment modality. METHODS: We retrospectively included patients hospitalized between January 2015 and June 2024 with unruptured intracranial aneurysm, who underwent endovascular treatment with coiling or Flow Diverter (FD) placement. Imaging data (at 6 months and 18

The normal human retina contains several classes of photosensitive cell-rods for low-light vision, three cone classes for daylight vision, and intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) expressing melanopsin for non-image-forming functions, including pupil control, melatonin suppression, and circadian photoentrainment. The spectral sensitivities of the photoreceptors overlap significantly, which means that most lights will stimulate all photoreceptors to varying degrees. The method of silent substitution is a powerful tool for stimulating individual photoreceptor classes sele

Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) are widely used for the treatment of multiple conditions such as hypertension, heart failure and chronic kidney disease. Angioedema is a rare but potentially fatal complication of ACEi use and unilateral tongue edema is a very rare presentation. We report a case of a 55-year-old man, with a history of hypertension, on enalapril for three years, who presented to the hospital with unilateral tongue swelling, without airway compromise. Other causes were excluded and the diagnosis of angioedema due to enalapril was established. The patient was discha

UNLABELLED: Acute pancreatitis (AP) remains one of the most common causes of emergency department visits in the USA. The literature supports an association between angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi), mainly at steady-state doses, and AP[1]. We present a case of recurrent AP and pseudocyst formation following multiple ACEi dose adjustments after a steady-state period lasting for over a decade. Previous reports have rarely described ACEi-induced pancreatitis and pseudocyst development. ACEi can cause significant ductal obstruction[2] and fluid retention due to its angioedema effects

BACKGROUND: While the angiotensin-converting enzyme degrades amyloid-β, angiotensinconverting enzyme inhibitors (ACEis) may slow cognitive decline by way of cholinergic effects, by increasing brain substance P and boosting the activity of neprilysin, and by modulating glucose homeostasis and augmenting the secretion of adipokines to enhance insulin sensitivity in patients with Alzheimer's disease dementia (AD). We aimed to investigate whether ACE gene polymorphisms rs1800764 and rs4291 are associated with cognitive and functional change in patients with AD, while also taking APOE haplotypes an

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor has been utilized for monitoring analyte-ligand interactions in modern drug discovery processes. SPR biosensors measure the change in refractive indexes over the course of analyte molecules' binding to a specific immobilized ligand on sensor chip. This effort highlights a comprehensive SPR study besides enzymatic assay for discovery of new Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (ACE) inhibitors via screening of medicinal plants. At first, five medicinal plants were selected as potential sources for developing new ACE inhibitors through hydrolyzing hippuryl-L-hi

Antioxidant and antihypertensive potential of the sulphated polygalactans isolated from the marine macroalgae Kappaphycus alvarezii and Gracilaria opuntia were assessed by utilising different in vitro systems. The galactans isolated from K. alvarezii possessed significantly greater antioxidative properties as determined by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH IC90 0.97 mg/mL) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS.+ IC90 0.72 mg/mL) scavenging activities than those isolated from G. opuntia (DPPH IC90 1.2 mg/mL and ABTS 0.86 mg/mL). Somatic angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) contains two active sites, the C- and N-domain, from which the C-domain is supposed to play a major role in blood pressure regulation and is therefore a promising pharmacological target to reduce blood pressure without side-effects. We report for the first time that tryptophan-containing dipeptides such as Ile-Trp or Val-Trp, which were recently found in food protein hydrolysates, are selective and competitive inhibitors for the C-domain with a selectivity factor of 40 and 70, respectively. Structure-activity studies showed that an N-terminal aliphat

Concern regarding accidental overexposure to radiation has been raised after the devastating Tohuku earthquake and tsunami which initiated the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan in March 2011. Radiation exposure is toxic and can be fatal depending on the dose received. Injury to the lung is often reported as part of multi-organ failure in victims of accidental exposures. Doses of radiation >8 Gray to the chest can induce pneumonitis with right ventricular hypertrophy starting after ∼2 months. Higher doses may be followed by pulmonary fibrosis that presents months to years after exposu

BACKGROUND: Recently, statins and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs) have been shown to slow aortic valve calcium accumulation. Although several studies also suggest that statins may reduce the hemodynamic progression of aortic stenosis (AS), no data are available for ACEIs or the combination of both.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 211 consecutive patients (aged 70+/-10 years, 104 females) with native AS, defined by a peak velocity >2.5 m/s (valve area 0.84+/-0.23 cm(2), mean gradient 42+/-19 mm Hg), with normal left ventricular function and no other significant valvular lesion

Tight blood pressure control among diabetic and nondiabetic patients with hypertension is perhaps the single most effective intervention used to delay progression to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The renoprotective actions of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors in patients with diabetic and hypertensive nephropathy is well established. Drugs of this class fairly uniformly reduce glomerulosclerosis, delay the deterioration in renal function, and improve proteinuria, a predictive surrogate marker for renal injury. Calcium- channel blockers (CCBs) in the phenylalkylamine (verapamil)

Whereas many physicians have been reluctant to treat hypertension in the elderly because of perceived limited benefits and the risk of side effects associated with traditional antihypertensive agents such as diuretics and beta blockers, studies and clinical experience have shown that elderly as well as younger patients can benefit from treatment. In recent years, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors have been found to be safe and effective in both young and elderly hypertensive patients without many of the adverse effects associated with traditional agents. ACE inhibitors possess cha

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors have several side effects of concern to the otolaryngologist. Angioedema is a rare, but potentially lethal adverse effect when associated with upper airway obstruction. Four cases of ACE-inhibitor-induced angioedema, three with significant upper airway obstruction, are reported. Angioedema secondary to ACE inhibition appears to be mechanism based. The probable link is the potentiation of bradykinin, which results in vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, and angioedema. Since angioedema can progress to upper airway obstruction, otolaryngol

Oligohydramnios and neonatal renal failure is reported in a premature infant whose mother had used enalapril in weeks 32-35 of her pregnancy. The infant recovered adequate renal function after peritoneal dialysis. Review of the literature supports our view that angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors should not be used in pregnancy; if they are, both mother and fetus should be monitored with extreme care.

Ketomethylene containing peptide analogs, modeled after a snake venom pentapeptide, have been shown to be potent angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors. Although the most potent compounds are up to five times more potent than captopril in inhibiting angiotensin converting enzyme activity, they are relatively weak inhibitors of [3H]captopril binding to membrane bound angiotensin converting enzyme. This indicates that inhibition of [3H]captopril binding and enzymatic activity is due to binding to distinct sites. These results suggest that the inhibitors bind to an additional site on the enzyme

Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors are vasodilators that exert their beneficial hemodynamic effects in hypertension primarily by withdrawal of the vasoconstricting action of endogenous angiotension II. Although the magnitude of the initial decrease in vascular resistance depends on renin activity, the long-term arterial blood pressure response does not appear to be influenced by initial renin levels. Cardiac output is not significantly altered by angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition in patients with mild-to-moderate hypertension, but a rise toward normal levels often occurs in patien

The authors investigated whether there is an association between angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitor (ACEI)/angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) users with hemorrhoids. A total of 21,670 ACEI users and 21,670 ARB users during 2000 - 2012 from a national health insurance database were included. Hemorrhoid incidences were monitored to the end of 2013. To examine the risk of hemorrhoids, the Cox proportional hazard model and the Kaplan-Meier method were used. The incidence rate of hemorrhoids in ARB users was 6.64 per 1000 person-years, which was higher than that of the ACEI users (5.48 per

Spondyloarthritis (SpA) is a chronic inflammatory disease that results in bone ankylosis. The tissue renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is an emerging pathway potentially implicated in SpA-associated bone changes. The aim of the present study was to determine the mechanisms underlying this relationship. Sakaguchi (SKG) mice injected with curdlan (SKGc), animal models for SpA, were treated with RAS modulators, angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) or angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEis). Disease activity was assessed using clinical scores and computed tomography scans. Mouse primary b
