The Effectiveness of Animal-Assisted Interventions for People Living With Dementia: An Overview of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis.

AIMS: This overview aims to provide high-quality evidence synthesis of animal-assisted interventions (AAIs) among people living with dementia. BACKGROUND: Dementia has become the seventh leading cause of death in the world. Unfortunately, currently effective pharmacological interventions remain elusive. As a non-pharmacological treatment, AAI is gaining more attention while the effectiveness of AAI for people living with dementia remains unclear. METHODS: EMBASE, PubMed, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, CNKI, VIP, CBM and Wanfang databases were searched from inception to March 2026. The AMSTAR2 was

Animal-Assisted Intervention (AAI) in a Recovery-Oriented Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program.

INTRODUCTION: Previous animal-assisted interventions (AAI) studies have documented that human-animal interaction can reduce anxiety levels and improve social skills and quality of life. In recent decades there was a growing evidence on the benefits achievable through human-animal relationship in different categories of people, such as children with autism spectrum disorder, elderly patients affected by dementia, patients with psychiatric disorders and alcohol/drug addiction. METHODS: In the present study ten patients from psychiatric residential facilities belonging to the EPASSS Foundation w

Gymnastic Training of Hippotherapy Horses Benefits Gait Quality When Ridden by Riders with Different Body Weights.

The objective was to evaluate the effects of gymnastic training on stride characteristics of walk and trot in therapy horses carrying riders of different weights. Eighteen horses used for therapeutic riding 5 days/week were randomly divided into 2 groups. Nine horses performed gymnastic (GYM) exercises after therapeutic riding on 4 days/week for 3 months, 9 horses did no additional exercises (SED). On days 0 and 90, an inertial sensor mounted to the girth on the ventral midline was used to evaluate stride characteristics when horses were ridden at walk (1.3 m/second) and trot (3.0 m/second) by

A qualitative assessment of a dog program for youth offenders in an adult prison.

OBJECTIVE: Dog programs occurring in prison tend to generate positive public opinion and media portrayals, yet they often lack empirical validation. This is the first study to examine the key themes that drive a dog program aimed at incarcerated youth serving time in an adult prison. DESIGN AND SAMPLE: A sample of male youth (n = 31) were provided survey questions on a rescue dog program. A grounded qualitative approach was employed with open-ended responses. RESULTS: The following themes emerged: the symbolism of the dog its role in therapy, perceptions of positive behaviors and rehabilitat

Developing an implementation guide for robotic pets in continuing care settings for older adults living with dementia in Canada: findings from a modified Delphi.

BACKGROUND: While live animal therapy has been demonstrated to improve the well-being of persons living with dementia, no-pet policies frequently exclude live pets in continuing care settings due to the potential for biting, scratching, and allergies to occur. Robotic pets as an alternative tool for supporting the well-being of persons living with dementia in continuing care is increasing in prevalence due to its therapeutic value. While there are benefits to using robotic pets, implementation challenges and unintended consequences exist. An evidence-based implementation guide is needed to sup

Modified alternating current defibrillation: a new defibrillation technique.

AIMS: Defibrillation is the only clinically effective treatment for ventricular fibrillation (VF). Early defibrillation improves the outcome and increases the chance of survival with full recovery. Immediate availability of a home-based defibrillator using mains-derived alternating current (AC) current will drastically improve the outcome. The aim was to develop a defibrillator based on the modulated AC, resembling biphasic configuration, and compare its efficacy, in a pig model, with a standard direct current (DC) defibrillator. METHODS AND RESULTS: A computer controlled, modulated AC defibr

Mammalian-like type II glutaminyl cyclases in Porphyromonas gingivalis and other oral pathogenic bacteria as targets for treatment of periodontitis.

The development of a targeted therapy would significantly improve the treatment of periodontitis and its associated diseases including Alzheimer's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and cardiovascular diseases. Glutaminyl cyclases (QCs) from the oral pathogens Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, and Prevotella intermedia represent attractive target enzymes for small-molecule inhibitor development, as their action is likely to stabilize essential periplasmic and outer membrane proteins by N-terminal pyroglutamination. In contrast to other microbial QCs that utilize the so-called type I

A mixed infection involving Bacteroides denticanum, Lactobacillus salivarius, and Streptococcus anginosus as causative agents of abscess around a pharyngo-esophageal anastomosis and acute vertebral osteomyelitis: Identification by ribosomal RNA sequencing of bacterial isolates.

"Bacteroides denticanum" is an anaerobic, non-spore-forming, gram-negative bacterium with a rod morphology typical of canine, ovine, and macropod oral flora. There is only one report of bloodstream infection caused by "B. denticanum" from a dog bite in human. Here, we report a case with no history of animal contact who developed an abscess caused by "B. denticanum" around a pharyngo-esophageal anastomosis after undergoing balloon dilatation procedure for stenosis following laryngectomy. The patient was a 73-year-old man with laryngeal cancer, esophageal cancer, hyperuricemia, dyslipidemia, and

Spreading of Pasteurella multocida Infection in a Pet Rabbit Breeding and Possible Implications on Healed Bunnies.

The number of pets such as dogs, cats, rabbits, and parrots has increased in European families. Social benefits to owners such as decreasing feelings of loneliness and anxiety are provided by pets which are also used in Animal-assisted Therapy (AAT). Nevertheless, human-animal interactions are also associated with health problems including allergies, asthma, and zoonosis. Rabbits may carry potential pathogens for humans. One of the most common bacteria that colonizes the oro-pharynx and the upper respiratory tract of rabbits is Pasteurella (P.) multocida. Transmission of the infection to human

Subconjunctival Administration of Adeno-associated Virus Vectors in Small Animal Models.

Ocular diseases include a wide range of inherited genetic and acquired disorders that are appealing targets for local drug delivery due to their relative ease of accessibility via multiple administration routes. Subconjunctival (SC) injections offer advantages over other intraocular administration routes as they are simple, safe, require only local anesthesia, and are usually performed in an outpatient setting. Although SC injections in small animals usually require the assistance of an operating microscope due to the size of the eye, they are widely utilized for drug delivery, including gene

New Frontiers of Extracorporeal Shock Wave Medicine in Urology from Bench to Clinical Studies.

A shock wave (SW), which carries energy and propagates through a medium, is a type of continuous transmitted sonic wave that can achieve rapid energy transformations. SWs have been applied for many fields of medical science in various treatment settings. In urology, high-energy extracorporeal SWs have been used to disintegrate urolithiasis for 30 years. However, at lower energy levels, SWs enhance the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), chemoattractant factors, and the recruitment of proge

Electromyographic activity of equine abdominal muscles during single and double riding in hippotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Hippotherapy is a therapeutic intervention that uses the horse as a biomechanical and sensorimotor agent to promote rehabilitation in individuals with physical and neurological disabilities. Depending on patient needs, riding may be performed with a single rider or with double riding, in which a therapist accompanies the practitioner on the horse. However, the effects of these riding configurations on equine trunk muscle activity remain poorly understood, despite their relevance for both horse welfare and the quality of therapeutic stimuli delivered to the patient. METHODS: Nine c

Current perspectives on the drug treatment of neonatal respiratory distress syndrome.

Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in preterm neonates is caused by a lack of alveolar surfactant, which leads to decreased pulmonary compliance and increased work of breathing. Effective therapy for RDS has reduced mortality at the expense of increasing the number of preterm survivors with chronic lung disease. Drugs such as corticosteroids, proterelin (thyrotropin-releasing hormone) and ambroxol have all been administered to mothers to promote fetal lung maturation, but of these only corticosteroids have been proven to be of benefit. The management of RDS includes assisted ventilation and s

Closed-loop resuscitation of burn shock.

Fluid therapy for burn shock is adjusted to establish a target level of urinary output. However, the means for adjusting infusion rate are not defined. Our objective was to compare the performance of automated computer-controlled resuscitation with manual control for burn resuscitation. Sheep with a 40% TBSA full-thickness burn, administered under halothane anesthesia, were resuscitated to restore and maintain normal sheep urinary outputs in a target range of 1 to 2 ml/kg per hour over the course of 48 hours using closed-loop resuscitation (n = 10) or manual hourly adjustment of infusion rate

Nature-based interventions in institutional and organisational settings: a scoping review.

The objective of this review was to scope the literature on nature-based interventions that could be conducted in institutional settings where people reside full-time for care or rehabilitation purposes. Systematic searches were conducted across CINAHL, Medline, Criminal Justice Abstracts, PsycINFO, Scopus, Social Care Online and Cochrane CENTRAL. A total of 85 studies (reported in 86 articles) were included. Four intervention modalities were identified: Gardening/therapeutic horticulture; animal-assisted therapies; care farming and virtual reality-based simulations of natural environments. Th

[Surgical Regeneration Therapy Using Myoblast Sheets for Severe Heart Failure].

Heart failure is a life-threatening disorder worldwide, and the current end-stage therapies for severe heart failure are replacement therapies such as ventricular-assist devices and heart transplantation. Although these therapies have been reported to be useful, there are many issues in terms of the durability, complications, limited donors, adverse effect of continuous administration of immunosuppressive agents, and high costs involved. Recently, regenerative therapy based on genetic, cellular, or tissue engineering techniques has gained attention as a new therapy to overcome the challenges e
