An Open Dataset for the Acoustic Monitoring of Nocturnal Migratory Birds in Europe.

The persisting threats on migratory bird populations highlight the urgent need for effective monitoring techniques that could assist in their conservation. Among these, passive acoustic monitoring is an essential tool, particularly for nocturnal migratory species that are difficult to track otherwise. This work presents the Nocturnal Bird Migration (NBM) dataset, a collection of 13,359 annotated vocalizations from 117 species of the Western Palearctic, compiled through a crowd-sourcing effort. The dataset includes precise time and frequency annotations gathered by dozens of bird enthusiasts ac

Provisioning ecotourism does not increase tiger shark site fidelity.

A perennial criticism of provisioning ecotourism is that it alters the natural behavior and ecology of the target species by providing an artificial food source. Here we evaluate its impact on the long-term site fidelity patterns of tiger sharks in French Polynesia. We hypothesized that a significant impact of provisioning would lead to (1) increases in individual site fidelity over time, and (2) an increase in the number of resident individuals over time. Of 53 individuals photo-identified and monitored during > 500 dives over five years, 10 individuals accounted for > 75% of all sightings, w

Insectivorous bats are less active near freeways.

Traffic disturbances (i.e. pollution, light, noise, and vibrations) often extend into the area surrounding a road creating a 'road-effect zone'. Habitat within the road-effect zone is degraded or, in severe cases, completely unsuitable for wildlife, resulting in indirect habitat loss. This can have a disproportionate impact on wildlife in highly modified landscapes, where remaining habitat is scarce or occurs predominantly along roadside reserves. In this study, we investigated the road-effect zone for insectivorous bats in highly cleared agricultural landscapes by quantifying the change in ca

Comparison of soft tissue response in rabbits following laryngeal implantation with hydroxylapatite, silicone rubber, and Teflon.

This study evaluates the soft tissue response in rabbits following laryngeal implantation for medialization using hydroxylapatite prostheses, carved silicone rubber prostheses, and injectable Teflon. Sixteen rabbits underwent left recurrent laryngeal nerve section for denervation and laryngeal implantation with hydroxylapatite. At 1, 3, 6, and 12 months, 4 animals were painlessly sacrificed and processed for histology. Similarly, animals were implanted with carved silicone rubber prostheses or with Teflon injected through a flap in the thyroid lamina for comparison at 1, 3, and 6 months. In an

MITES (FAMILY TROMBICULIDAE) PARASITIZING BIRDS MIGRATING FROM AFRICA TO EUROPE.

The mechanisms of dissemination of arthropod-borne human and animal pathogens are of considerable interest to the epidemiologist, veterinarian and biologist. Birds which are hosts to such pathogens and their arthropod vectors could transport them over long distances during their spring and autumn migratory flights. In April 1961, birds migrating from Africa to Europe were collected in south-western Spain and examined for ectoparasites and antibodies to arboviruses. Fully engorged larvae of two species of trombiculid mites unknown in Europe (genera Neoschoengastia and Blankaartia) but found in A

In search of missing links in otology. III. Development of a new animal model for cholesteatoma.

An experimental study was conducted in chinchillas regarding the pathogenesis of acquired cholesteatoma (keratoma). The placement of a chemically modified gelatin membrane from the external auditory canal to the promontory through a tympanic membrane perforation stimulated squamous epithelial cell migration. Cholesteatoma formation with the presence of keratin debris and inflammatory reactions was observed in the middle ear and anterior bulla in 53.5% of the experimental animals. These experimental findings show for the first time the presence of epithelial migration and true cholesteatoma for

A longitudinal survey of African animal trypanosomiasis in domestic cattle on the Jos Plateau, Nigeria: prevalence, distribution and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Trypanosomiasis is a widespread disease of livestock in Nigeria and a major constraint to the rural economy. The Jos Plateau, Nigeria was free from tsetse flies and the trypanosomes they transmit due to its high altitude and the absence of animal trypanosomiasis attracted large numbers of cattle-keeping pastoralists to inhabit the plateau. The Jos Plateau now plays a significant role in the national cattle industry, accommodating approximately 7% of the national herd and supporting 300,000 pastoralists and over one million cattle. However, during the past two decades tsetse flies h

Inhibition of macrophage migration by nucleotide-containing streptococcal preparations.

Certain extracts of streptococcal cell walls are known to inhibit macrophage migration in vitro. In this study, we attempted to identify the streptococcal components responsible for this phenomenon. Trypsinized cell walls and cytoplasm from groups A and B streptococci were extracted with hot formamide followed by acetone precipitation. Subsequent gel filtration in aqueous solutions yielded a fraction devoid of C-carbohydrate and containing mostly oligonucleotides, apparently derived from streptococcal cytoplasm. This fraction significantly inhibited the migration of peritoneal exudate cells fr

Effects of Animal Venoms and Toxins on Hallmarks of Cancer.

Animal venoms are a cocktail of proteins and peptides, targeting vital physiological processes. Venoms have evolved to assist in the capture and digestion of prey. Key venom components often include neurotoxins, myotoxins, cardiotoxins, hematoxins and catalytic enzymes. The pharmacological activities of venom components have been investigated as a source of potential therapeutic agents. Interestingly, a number of animal toxins display profound anticancer effects. These include toxins purified from snake, bee and scorpion venoms effecting cancer cell proliferation, migration, invasion, apoptoti

Altered galectin-3 distribution and migratory function in the pre-diabetic non-obese diabetic mouse thymus.

Galectin-3 is an endogenous lectin which binds mainly to β-galactosides on the cell surface and extracellular matrix (ECM) glycoproteins. In the thymus, this lectin is constitutively expressed, being involved in thymocyte adhesion, migration, and death. Galectin-3 has been related to type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease characterized by pancreatic β-cell destruction mediated by autoreactive T lymphocytes. Non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice represent a suitable model to study type 1 diabetes, as they develop the disease like humans. We previously described important thymic alterations in these ani

Far eastern curlew and whimbrel prefer flying low - wind support and good visibility appear only secondary factors in determining migratory flight altitude.

BACKGROUND: In-flight conditions are hypothesized to influence the timing and success of long-distance migration. Wind assistance and thermal uplift are thought to reduce the energetic costs of flight, humidity, air pressure and temperature may affect the migrants' water balance, and clouds may impede navigation. Recent advances in animal-borne long-distance tracking enable evaluating the importance of these factors in determining animals' flight altitude. METHODS: Here we determine the effects of wind, humidity, temperature, cloud cover, and altitude (as proxy for climbing costs and air pres

Brugia pahangi: immunization with early L3 ES alters parasite migration, and reduces microfilaremia and lymphatic lesion formation in gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus).

Previous studies have shown that intradermally (ID) injected Brugia pahangi L3 s migrate through various tissues and into the lymphatics of gerbils in a distinct pattern. Excretory/secretory products (ES) produced at the time of invasion of B. pahangi are likely to be important in this early migration phase of the parasite life cycle in their rodent host. Hence, early L3 ES was collected from 24h in vitro cultures of B. pahangi L3 larvae and used in immunization experiments to investigate the effect of immunity to early L3 ES on worm migration, survival and development of B. pahangi. In vivo treatment with anti-ICAM-1 and anti-LFA-1 antibodies inhibits contact sensitization-induced migration of epidermal Langerhans cells to regional lymph nodes.

Development of contact hypersensitivity in mice depends on the migration of Langerhans cells from the epidermis to regional lymph nodes. Since ICAM-1 and LFA-1 play important roles in leukocyte migration, we sought to determine whether in vivo administration of anti-ICAM-1 and anti-LFA-1 antibodies would inhibit contact sensitization-induced migration of epidermal Langerhans cells to regional lymph nodes. Twenty-four hours after contact sensitization of mice with FITC, a brightly FITC-stained Ia+ population of dendritic cells capable of stimulating a FITC-specific Ia-restricted T-cell hybridom

Evaluation of developmental toxicants and signaling pathways in a functional test based on the migration of human neural crest cells.

BACKGROUND: Information on the potential developmental toxicity (DT) of the majority of chemicals is scarce, and test capacities for further animal-based testing are limited. Therefore, new approaches with higher throughput are required. A screening strategy based on the use of relevant human cell types has been proposed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and others. Because impaired neural crest (NC) function is one of the known causes for teratologic effects, testing of toxicant effects on NC cells is desirable for a DT test battery. OBJECTIVE: We developed a robust and widely appl

Up-regulation of stromal cell-derived factor-1 enhances migration of transplanted neural stem cells to injury region following degeneration of spiral ganglion neurons in the adult rat inner ear.

Neural stem cell (NSC) transplantation into the cochlea is widely used for the treatment of spiral ganglion neuron (SGN) degenerative disease and injury in the animal models, but the migration of the transplanted NSCs to the injury region is difficult and the mechanism is still unclear. In this study, we aimed to validate whether the SGN-degenerated cochlear microenvironment plays a role in the NSC migration and investigated whether stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) was involved in the NSCs migration. Using a rat SGN degeneration model, we demonstrated that the transplanted NSCs are more l

Antiphospholipid antibodies inhibit the migration and invasion of trophoblast cells by suppressing the JNK/C-Jun/MMP1 signaling pathway.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disease primarily manifested by recurrent thrombosis and pregnancy-related complications. The migration and invasion abilities of trophoblast cells play a crucial role in maintaining normal pregnancy. It is now increasingly recognized that adverse pregnancy outcomes in APS are associated with the disruption of trophoblast function by aPL (antiphospholipid antibodies), rather than thrombotic occlusion of the placental vasculature. Therefore, this article aimed to explore the potential mechanisms by which aPL affect trophoblast cell fu

Integrated pan-cancer analysis and experimental validation reveal that syndecan-1 drives glioblastoma pathogenesis and associates with immune infiltration.

BACKGROUNDS: Syndecan-1 (SDC1) is a key transmembrane proteoglycan involved in cell adhesion and epithelial integrity. Although evidence links SDC1 to tumor progression, its pan-cancer functions and mechanistic roles are not fully understood. METHODS: We defined the multidimensional role of SDC1 across cancers by leveraging multi-platform genomic and clinical data. Our study characterized its associations with patient survival, molecular mechanisms, immune contexture, and therapeutic sensitivity. Initial observations in glioma subtypessuggested a pro-tumorigenic function. Consequently, this f

Androsin alleviates colorectal cancer by inhibiting the PI3K/Akt-centered signaling pathway.

Androsin is a phenolic acid compound extracted from Picrorhiza kurroa with apocynin as its aglycone. Early studies have shown that apocynin exhibits specific inhibition towards NADPH oxidases (NOXs) and has some therapeutic effects on colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the effects and mechanisms of androsin on CRC remain unexplored. Based on the network pharmacology analysis, this study investigates the mechanisms of androsin on CRC at molecular, cellular, and animal tissue levels. Results indicate that in the high-concentration range, androsin induces apoptosis and inhibits the proliferation o

Human neurospheres as three-dimensional cellular systems for developmental neurotoxicity testing.

BACKGROUND: Developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) of environmental chemicals is a serious threat to human health. Current DNT testing guidelines propose investigations in rodents, which require large numbers of animals. With regard to the "3 Rs" (reduction, replacement, and refinement) of animal testing and the European regulation of chemicals [Registration, Evaluation, and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH)], alternative testing strategies are needed in order to refine and reduce animal experiments and allow faster and less expensive screening. OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to establish
