A benchmark for computational analysis of animal behavior, using animal-borne tags.

BACKGROUND: Animal-borne sensors ('bio-loggers') can record a suite of kinematic and environmental data, which are used to elucidate animal ecophysiology and improve conservation efforts. Machine learning techniques are used for interpreting the large amounts of data recorded by bio-loggers, but there exists no common framework for comparing the different machine learning techniques in this domain. This makes it difficult to, for example, identify patterns in what works well for machine learning-based analysis of bio-logger data. It also makes it difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of nove

Cell-free supernatants produced by lactic acid bacteria reduce Salmonella population in vitro.

The genus Salmonella is closely associated with foodborne outbreaks and animal diseases, and reports of antimicrobial resistance in Salmonella species are frequent. Several alternatives have been developed to control this pathogen, such as cell-free supernatants (CFS). Our objective here was to evaluate the use of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) CFS against Salmonella in vitro. Seventeen strains of LAB were used to produce CFS, and their antimicrobial activity was screened towards six strains of Salmonella. In addition, CFS were also pH-neutralized and/or boiled. Those with the best results were ly

Forage-free diet in finishing cattle: Effects on performance, ruminal fermentation, and enteric methane mitigation.

Ruminant production is largely pasture-based, and although this system is beneficial during the cow-calf and growing phases, it often becomes nutritionally limiting during finishing, delaying slaughter and increasing greenhouse gas emissions. High-grain diets accelerate weight gain and may reduce enteric methane (CH4) emissions per unit of animal output, but they increase the risk of ruminal acidosis. Ionophores are effective in mitigating this disorder, yet their use is restricted in several countries, stimulating interest in sustainable alternatives such as plant-derived bioactive compounds.

In Vitro ELISA Test to Evaluate Rabies Vaccine Potency.

The growing global concern for the animal welfare is encouraging manufacturers and the National Control Laboratories (OMCLs) to follow the 3Rs strategy for the Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement of the laboratory animal testing. The development of in vitro approaches is recommended at the WHO and European levels as alternatives to the NIH test for evaluating the rabies vaccine potency. At the surface of the rabies virus (RABV) particle, trimers of glycoprotein constitute the major immunogen to induce Viral Neutralizing Antibodies (VNAbs). An ELISA test, where Neutralizing Monoclonal Antibo

Reducing anthelmintic inputs in organic farming: Are small ruminant farmers integrating alternative strategies to control gastrointestinal nematodes?

To counter the global spread of anthelmintic resistance (AR), considerable efforts have been invested in the development and dissemination of sustainable alternatives to control gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections in small ruminants. The degree to which these have been accepted and integrated by farmers, particularly in organic systems, where the drive to reduce chemical inputs is arguably even more pressing, has been little studied. To identify whether more comprehensive actions are needed to support the uptake of alternative GIN controls amongst organic farmers, this study conducted a

New therapeutic approaches for treatment of tularaemia: a review.

Antibiotic treatment of tularaemia is based on a few drugs, including the fluoroquinolones (e.g., ciprofloxacin), the tetracyclines (e.g., doxycycline), and the aminoglycosides (streptomycin and gentamicin). Because no effective and safe vaccine is currently available, tularaemia prophylaxis following proven exposure to F. tularensis also relies on administration of antibiotics. A number of reasons make it necessary to search for new therapeutic alternatives: the potential toxicity of first-line drugs, especially in children and pregnant women; a high rate of treatment relapses and failures, e

Swift and Reliable "Easy Lab" Methods for the Sensitive Molecular Detection of African Swine Fever Virus.

African swine fever (ASF) is a contagious viral hemorrhagic disease of domestic pigs and wild boars. The disease is notifiable to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and is responsible for high mortality and serious economic losses. PCR and real-time PCR (qPCR) are the OIE-recommended standard methods for the direct detection of African swine fever virus (ASFV) DNA. The aim of our work was the simplification and standardization of the molecular diagnostic workflow in the lab. For validation of this "easy lab" workflow, different sample materials from animal trials were collected and

Assisted reproductive techniques for canines: preservation of genetic material in domestic dogs.

Assisted reproductive techniques (ARTs), such as artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization, and cryopreservation of gametes/zygotes, have been developed to improve breeding and reproduction of livestock, and for the treatment of human infertility. Their widespread use has contributed to improvements in human health and welfare. However, in dogs, only artificial insemination using frozen semen is readily available as an ART to improve breeding and control genetic diversity. A recent priority in sperm cryopreservation is the development of alternatives to egg yolk, which is widely used as

Using Biocontrol Fungi to Control Helminthosis in Wild Animals: An Innovative Proposal for the Health and Conservation of Species.

Helminth parasites of wild animals represent a major threat to the health of these animals, leading to significant losses in performance, health, and zoonotic implications. In some zoos, anthelmintics have traditionally been used to control these parasites, many of which are also zoonotic. Other actions, such as the removal of organic waste, have also been adopted. Few or no control measures are applied to free-ranging wild animals. Helminthophagous fungi are a promising biological alternative. When animals ingest fungal spores, they are excreted in their feces, where they trap and destroy hel

Exposure to the growth promoter tylosin elicits gut microbiota disruption and metabolic imbalance in mouse model.

The environmental risk associated with the usage of the antibiotic tylosin as an animal growth promoter (AGPs) needs to be assessed because such agents are used in abundance and contamination of the environment is common, yet their effects on the physiology and gut microbiota composition of animals and humans are poorly understood. In this work, we performed metagenomic analysis and revealed that tylosin significantly disrupted the gut microbiota structure of animals, reduced species diversity, and caused the increase in the relative abundance of Blautia (60.95%). Translational Barriers to Pharmaceutical Excipient Readiness in Marine-Derived Polymers.

Marine polymers have attracted a lot of attention as potential alternatives to the traditional animal-derived polymers in pharmaceutical formulation since they are abundant, biocompatible, and versatile in functionality. However, the presence of these materials in dosage-form studies, often in support of proof-of-concept trials, does not mean they are ready to apply as excipients routinely. This review critically evaluates the reasons why three of the most highly researched marine-derived polymers, chitosan, alginate, and carrageenan, continue to encounter significant translational barriers in

Antimicrobial resistance in plant-associated microbial communities: mechanisms, ecology, and one health implications.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as a major global challenge threatening human, animal, plant and the environment health. Although AMR has been extensively studied in clinical and veterinary sectors, its emergence and dissemination in plant-based agricultural systems remains comparatively underexplored despite of the widespread use of antibiotics, fungicides and other antimicrobial compounds in crop production. These practices exerts selective pressure on plant associated microbial communities, promoting the evolution and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) across

Effective strategies for managing trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and levofloxacin-resistant Stenotrophomonas maltophilia infections: bridging the gap between scientific evidence and clinical practice.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To discuss the therapeutic options available for the management of difficult-to-treat strains of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia ( Sma ), namely those resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and fluoroquinolones. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent pharmacological studies have highlighted the fact that current breakpoints for first-line antibiotics against Sma are too high. In light of these data, it is likely that the prevalence of difficult-to-treat (DTR) Sma is underestimated worldwide. Two promising alternatives for treating DTR strains are cefiderocol and the combination of aztreo

Veterinarian attitudes towards immunocontraceptive use in cats.

BACKGROUND: The continuously expanding global cat population poses concerns to public health, native ecosystems and individual animal welfare. These concerns have led to additional management strategies to reduce unowned cat numbers, including the development of feline immunocontraceptives. Use of these contraceptives could also provide pet owners with alternatives to surgical sterilisation. However, the implementation of immunocontraceptives into feline medicine requires the support of the veterinary community. AIMS: The aim of this research was to evaluate the current global attitudes and i

Therapeutic potential and safety challenges of antimicrobial peptides and peptidomimetics against ESKAPEE pathogens: a systematic review with quantitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial peptides and peptidomimetics have emerged as promising alternatives to traditional antibiotics for MDR bacterial infections. Their advancement, however, is often limited by toxicity and poor pharmacokinetics. In this review, we apply a rigorous quantitative framework to evaluate the therapeutic balance of potency and safety for these agents, offering new perspectives that extend beyond previous descriptive analyses. METHODS: We systematically searched key biomedical databases (January 2000 to May 2025) for studies reporting antimicrobial potency, cytotoxicity, select

Characterization of bacteriophages virulent for Clostridium perfringens and identification of phage lytic enzymes as alternatives to antibiotics for potential control of the bacterium.

There has been a resurgent interest in the use of bacteriophages or their gene products to control bacterial pathogens as alternatives to currently used antibiotics. Clostridium perfringens is a gram-positive, spore-forming anaerobic bacterium that plays a significant role in human foodborne disease as well as non-foodborne human, animal, and avian diseases. Countries that have complied with the ban on antimicrobial growth promoters in feeds have reported increased incidences of C. perfringens-associated diseases in poultry. To address these issues, new antimicrobial agents, putative lysins en

In vivo expression technology and signature-tagged mutagenesis screens for identifying mechanisms of survival of zoonotic foodborne pathogens.

High-throughput genetic screens provide great insights into the biochemistry and molecular biology of how bacteria sense, respond to, and propagate within their environments. Genomics era techniques such as microarrays and proteomics have great potential to increase our understanding of how foodborne pathogens grow and survive within animal and human hosts, in the environment and foods, and during thermal and nonthermal inactivation protocols. While these techniques are incredibly useful for studying gene expression in simplified in vitro conditions, it is much more challenging to pursue simil
