Enterovirus71 (EV71) is the major causative agent of hand, foot and mouth disease, which threatens the health of infants and young children. The expression of inflammatory cytokines induced by this viral infection aggravate the illness. Here, we describe the anti-EV71 activity of a specific p38 inhibitor that regulates the p38-MAPK signaling pathway. PD169316 was specifically selected from a MAPK compound library due to its significant inhibitory effect on EV71 replication. PD169316 also reduced EV71-induced apoptosis. Animal experiments showed that PD169316 can dampen the replication of EV71,

Enterovirus 71 (EV71) is now recognized as an emerging neurotropic virus in Asia and with Coxsackie virus (CV) it is the other major causative agent of hand-foot-mouth diseases (HFMD). Effective medications and/or prophylactic vaccines against HFMD are urgently needed. From a scientific (the feasibility of bioprocess, immunological responses and potency in animal challenge model) and business development (cost of goods) points of view, we in this review address and discuss the pros and cons of different EV71 vaccine candidates that have been produced and evaluated in animal models. Organic pig husbandry systems in Europe are diverse - ranging from indoor systems with concrete outside run (IN) to outdoor systems all year round (OUT) and combinations of both on one farm (POUT). As this diversity has rarely been taken into account in research projects on organic pig production, the aim of this study was to assess and compare pig health, welfare and productivity in these three systems. Animal health and welfare were assessed using direct observation and records of 22 animal-based measures, comprising 17 health-, 3 productivity- and 2 behavioural measures. These were collecte

Acute leptospirosis is an infrequent disease in sheep that can cause jaundice, haemolysis, haemoglobinuria, hepatitis and nephritis. In most reports the diagnoses have been made by clinical, pathological or serological evidence without isolation or direct identification of the agent. Here, we report one confirmed and one presumptive outbreak of acute leptospirosis in suckling lambs from two unrelated sheep farms in Uruguay with mortalities of 9/60 (15%) and 9/163 (5.5%) lambs. Both outbreaks occurred in Sep-Oct 2017 after heavy rainfall and flooding events. The main gross and histologic pathol

Improperly treated hexavalent chromium-containing industrial wastes contaminate drinking water, potentially affecting children taking breast milk or baby bottles prepared with infant formula. Thus, the aim of the present work was to determine the effect of this toxic on bone activity in the developing alveolus during tooth eruption of suckling Wistar rats intoxicated with potassium dichromate. Experimental animals received a daily dose of 12.5mg/kg body weight of potassium dichromate by gavage for 10 days; controls received an equivalent volume of saline solution. Histologic and histomorphomet

The molecular and isotopic chemistry of organic residues from archaeological potsherds was used to obtain further insight into the dietary trends and economies at the Constance lake-shore Neolithic settlements. The archaeological organic residues from the Early Late Neolithic (3922-3902 BC) site Hornstaad-Hornle IA/Germany are, at present, the oldest archaeological samples analysed at the Institute of Mineralogy and Geochemistry of the University of Lausanne. The approach includes 13C/12C and 15N/14N ratios of the bulk organic residues, fatty acids distribution and 13C/12C ratios of individual

The commensal microbes of the gut microbiota make important contributions to host defense against gastrointestinal pathogens, including Vibrio cholerae, the etiologic agent of cholera. As interindividual microbiota variation drives individual differences in infection susceptibility, we examined both host and V. cholerae gene expression during infection of suckling mice transplanted with different model human commensal communities, including an infection-susceptible configuration representing communities damaged by recurrent diarrhea and malnutrition in cholera endemic areas and a representativ

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was to determine how the spread of contagious agalactia in sheep and goats in the Odesa region depended on the age of the animals and the season.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: From January 2016 to December 2018, 1,964 ewes and 1,484 nanny goats of different age groups were studied by ELISA for antibodies to Mycoplasma agalactiae.
RESULTS: The highest incidence of contagious agalactia was registered in one-year-old animals and was 59.7‒83.0%, two-year-old ruminants showed 17.0‒40.3% prevalence, in livestock at the age of 3-4 years no serological evidence of the dise

Data from experimental and human cryptosporidiosis have established a major role of specific immunity in the control of Cryptosporidium parvum infection. In this work, alterations in spleen and Peyer's patch (Pp) lymphocytes were investigated in the course of a spontaneously resolutive gut cryptosporidiosis in four-day-old suckling NMRI mice infected with either 4 x 10(5) or 30 viable oocysts. Oocysts from entire small intestines, and spleen and Pp lymphocytes were examined using flow cytometry from day 7 to day 27 post-infection. Compared to uninfected animals, a 3-5 fold increase in the numb

It has been reported in the literature that the stomach and the intestine in newborns undergo profound growth and functional maturation during the immediate postnatal period and diet ingestion has a significant impact on these changes. The present paper examines oesophageal development in newborn pigs during the first three postnatal days and the effects of diet and oral insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) or IGF-II on oesophageal morphology. It was observed that marked changes, including reduction in thickness of the epithelium, accelerated proliferation and migration of basal epithelial cel

Since the beginning of the 19th century, the comparative and ontogenetic branches of developmental physiology were cultivated in our country. Evidence was given that development of the gastrointestinal tract in tadpoles is dependent on the quality of proteins in their food. A complete metamorphosis of Amblystoma mexicanum, was entirely accomplished by feeding with powderized thyroid gland. The definition and chronological delimitation of both the suckling and weaning period in experimental animals opened the investigation of the effect of disturbance of the natural environment caused by premat

BACKGROUND: Shigella spp. are Gram-negative enteropathogens responsible for bacillary dysentery (shigellosis) in humans and animals. While the primary reservoirs of Shigella are historically recognized as humans and non-human primates, emerging evidence indicates an expanding host range encompassing diverse animal species. This study systematically characterizes a Shigella sp. strain isolated from diarrheic suckling mice.
METHODS: Diarrheic suckling mice intestinal contents were collected and analyzed using 16S rRNA sequencing technology. Shigella sp. JZ001 strain was isolated, purified, and

Malnourished and well-fed neonatal Holtzman rats 10 days of age were exposed to 3 doses of aflatoxin B1 [(AFB1) CAS: 1162-65-8] at intervals of 96 hours to study the combined effect of malnutrition and cell replication in AFB1-induced hepato-carcinogenesis. The neonatal model made use of the fact that cell replication persists in the liver for 3 weeks of postnatal life. Malnutrition during suckling was induced by adopting the techniques of Widdowson and McCance of increasing the litter size to 16. Following AFB1 administration, the malnourished animals were rehabilitated on a high-protein pell

Outbreaks of cholera are caused by the highly transmissive pathogen Vibrio cholerae. Infant mouse studies have elucidated many aspects of V. cholerae pathogenesis; however, the components of pathogenesis that feed-forward to promote transmission have remained enigmatic because animal models routinely bypass the mechanisms of inter-animal transmission by directly inoculating cultured bacteria into the stomach. Here, a transposon screen reveals that inactivation of the V. cholerae motility-linked gene motV increases infant mouse intestinal colonization. Compared to wild-type V. cholerae, a ΔmotV

One theory of the etiology of Reye's syndrome is that environmental toxins predispose the child to react abnormally to virus infection. Influenza B is the most commonly implicated virus. Suckling mice were exposed to a surfactant, Toximul MP8, either by a single intraperitoneal injection or by repeated applications to the skin. At various times after exposure, the mice were infected intranasally with influenza B virus. Mice exposed to a combination of chemical and virus had a higher mortality rate than that of the control groups. Serum ammonia levels were elevated and the mitochondrial urea cy

The type II sodium-dependent Pi (NaPi) cotransporters (NaPi-IIa, NaPi-IIb and NaPi-IIc) contribute to renal and intestinal Pi absorption. 1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D3] is an important factor for NaPi-II transporters in the small intestine and kidney. In a previous study, low levels of 1,25(OH)2D3 appeared to suppress the expression of renal NaPi cotransporters. We identified a functional vitamin D receptor-responsive element in the human NaPi-IIa and NaPi-IIc genes in renal epithelial cells. In an analysis of vitamin D receptor (VDR)-null mice, we observed early onset of hypophosphatem

The live attenuated Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine SA14-14-2 was licensed decades ago and now approved for clinical use in most JE endemic countries. Large-scale clinical trials demonstrate ideal safety and efficacy profile of this Chinese vaccine. The SA14-14-2 vaccine was derived from a virulent strain SA14 after hundreds of serial passaging in cells and animals, concern about virulence reversion remains exist. In the present study, to study the in vitro and in vivo genetic and attenuation stability of the vaccine virus, SA14-14-2 was serially passaged in Vero cells and mouse brain follo

Cholera toxin (CT) is the primary virulence factor responsible for severe cholera. Vibrio cholerae strains unable to produce CT show severe attenuation of virulence in animals and humans. The pentameric B subunit of CT (CTB) contains the immunodominant epitopes recognized by antibodies that neutralize CT. Although CTB is a potent immunogen and a promising protective vaccine antigen in animal models, immunization of humans with detoxified CT failed to protect against cholera. We recently demonstrated however that pups reared from mice immunized intraperitoneally (IP) with 3 doses of recombinant

An enzyme immunoassay was developed for the detection of human immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibody to different flavivirus antigens. The IgM antibody of human sera was selectively bound to anti-IgM antibody-coated solid-phase plates. Flavivirus IgM antibodies were then detected by use of various enzyme-labeled antigens. The flavivirus antigens (dengue type 2 virus, West Nile virus, and tick-borne encephalitis virus) were produced in suckling mice. The antigens were labeled with horseradish peroxidase by adding the activated enzyme at alkaline pH to sucrose-acetone-treated antigens. Addition of unl

The mammalian tongue is a muscular hydrostat composed of multiple muscles, each with complex fiber architecture and small motor units. This allows it to move and deform in three dimensions (3D) to function in several complex behaviors, including suckling. The ability of infant mammals to successfully suckle is dependent on these variable deformations, as the tongue must perform multiple functions simultaneously. The lateral margins of the tongue curl to seal around a nipple, while the middle of the tongue moves in an anteroposterior wave to suck milk into the mouth, transport it posteriorly, a
