[Oral complications in patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa].

This article presents the oral situation of 11 anorectic and 41 bulimic patients and compares it with 50 healthy control persons. While patients with an eating disorder showed less signs of gingival inflammation (SBI: anorexia: 14.6%; bulimia: 12.5%; controls: 44.7%), they had clearly more enamel erosions than healthy control persons. In 27 of 41 bulimic patients a bilateral swelling of the parotid gland was found. A significant correlation between the parotid enlargement and enamel erosion exists in bulimic patients with an anorectic prephase. Patients with an eating disorder had higher level

An evaluation of family therapy in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

A controlled trial comparing family therapy with individual supportive therapy in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa was undertaken. Eighty patients (57 with anorexia nervosa; 23 with bulimia nervosa) were first admitted to a specialized unit to restore their weight to normal. Before discharge, they were randomly allocated to family therapy or the control treatment (individual supportive therapy). After one year of psychological treatment, they were reassessed, using body weight, menstrual function, and ratings on the Morgan and Russell scales. Family therapy was found to be more effective t

Obsessions are strongly related to eating disorder symptoms in anorexia nervosa and atypical anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) are highly comorbid. However, little research has examined which specific cognitive-behavioral aspects (e.g., checking, obsessing) of OCD are most relevant in those with AN. Furthermore, there is no research examining aspects of OCD in Atypical AN. The current two studies (N = 139 and N = 115 individuals diagnosed with AN/Atypical AN) examined a) which aspects of OCD were most related to AN symptomatology and b) if there were differences in OCD between individuals diagnosed with AN vs Atypical AN. We found that obsessing was most re

Anorexia/bulimia nervosa: the development of anorexia nervosa and of mental symptoms. Treatment and the outcome of the disease.

Since 1958 we have conducted a prospective study of anorexia/bulimia nervosa (A/BN) covering a total of 550 patients. This paper presents a new idea of the development of A/BN. For a variety of reasons, a predisposition for developing A/BN is triggered by a minor and non-specific loss of weight. The development of mental symptoms with pathological thoughts and behaviour, and disturbances in the satiety and hunger centres suggest a cerebral dysfunction. Educating patients in pathophysiology enables them to use their intelligence, logical thinking and strong will to evaluate the importance of an

Meta-analysis of theory of mind in anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa: A specific İmpairment of cognitive perspective taking in anorexia nervosa?

OBJECTIVE: Deficits in theory of mind (ToM), ability to infer mental states of others, can play a significant role in interpersonal difficulties and/or unawareness of illness observed in AN and other eating disorders including bulimia Nervosa (BN). METHOD: Current meta-analysis aimed to summarize available evidence for deficits in ToM in AN and BN and examine the effects of number of study-level variables on observed findings. In this meta-analysis, 15 studies (22 samples with eating disorders) investigating ToM performances of 677 individuals with AN or BN and 514 healthy controls were inclu

Affective processes underlying restrictive eating in atypical anorexia nervosa: Comparisons to anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa using ecological momentary assessment.

OBJECTIVE: Certain symptom and risk/maintenance factor similarities between individuals with atypical anorexia nervosa (AN) and 'typical' AN have been documented, but few studies have investigated how atypical AN compares to bulimia nervosa (BN). Further, the role of affective mechanisms in maintaining restrictive eating in atypical AN has not been examined. The current study investigated whether atypical AN resembles AN and/or BN on affect-related processes using questionnaires and ecological momentary assessment (EMA). METHOD: Women with atypical AN (n = 24), AN-restrictive subtype, (n = 27

PSYCHOTIC SYMPTOMS IN ANOREXIA NERVOSA.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies suggest an overlap and mutual influence between Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and psychotic symptoms, with the anorexic voice proposed as a clinically significant marker within this spectrum. This cross-sectional observational study aimed to assess the prevalence and characteristics of psychotic symptoms, focusing on the anorexic voice, in patients with AN. Secondary objectives included exploring associations with dissociation, body image disturbance (BID), sociodemographic and clinical factors. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Forty-three patients were recruited from specialized outp

Medical Complications of Anorexia Nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is the most prevalent eating disorder, affecting almost 3 million people and having the highest mortality rate among psychiatric conditions. The hypometabolic state in AN, caused by an imbalance between energy intake and needs, leads to various medical complications, including gastrointestinal disorders, cardiovascular abnormalities, hematologic alterations, neurocognitive impairment, low bone mineral density, electrolyte imbalances, nephrological issues, and dermatological lesions. Some of these complications are life-threatening, necessitating prompt recognition and tre

Neurodevelopmental Sequelae of Anorexia Nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe mental illness with substantial morbidity and mortality. The central, salient disturbance in AN is restriction of food intake, leading to inappropriately low body weight. Onset of illness is most common during mid-adolescence, and approximately 1% of female individuals are affected over a lifetime, across all socioeconomic classes.1 Despite advancements in treatment for adolescents with AN, remission rates remain disappointing-less than 50% of teens typically respond to initial treatment.2 Among those who achieve remission, subsequent relapses of AN are common

Sleep disturbances in anorexia nervosa.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep is crucial for physical and psychological health, and disturbances are closely linked to psychiatric disorders, making their management essential for improving treatment outcomes and preventing relapse. Although sleep disturbances are implicated in psychopathology of eating disorders, its role in anorexia nervosa (AN) remains unclear. This review aimed to characterise sleep in AN. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in four scientific databases, including papers from inception to 25 May 2024. A machine learning algorithm (ASReview) was utilised to screen titles and

Endocrine complications of anorexia nervosa.

An important component in the treatment of anorexia nervosa (AN) is the evaluation and management of its endocrine complications, including functional hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and increased fracture risk. The body's adaptive response to chronic starvation results in many endocrine abnormalities, most of which are reversible upon weight restoration. A multidisciplinary team with experience in treating patients with AN is critical to improving endocrine outcomes in patients with this disorder, including in women with AN who are interested in fertility. Much less is understood about endocrin

[Anorexia nervosa and music therapy].

Supporting people suffering from anorexia nervosa remains a challenge. While traditional treatment focuses more on speech and its emergence for the patient and family, non-medicinal and non-verbal therapies are used more systematically, sometimes as a last resort. Yet, as a non-verbal mediated therapy, music therapy can find a legitimate place and complement all the psychiatric, psychotherapeutic, somatic, dietetic and nursing areas where speech already circulates.

Pneumatosis Intestinalis and Anorexia Nervosa.

Background: Pneumatosis intestinalis (PI), the presence of gas within the intestinal wall, is a condition historically associated with many diagnoses and can be life-threatening. The purpose of this article is to understand PI better in the setting of malnutrition secondary to anorexia nervosa (AN), a condition not historically affiliated with PI. Patients and Methods: In this retrospective study, the clinical findings of seven patients with AN are reported. Results: The patients were all found to have PI involving the right colon, with only a single patient also found to have PI involving add

[Functional Neurosurgery for Anorexia Nervosa].

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious psychiatric disorder characterized by disturbances in body- and self-perception and excessive weight loss. AN is sometimes refractory to conventional treatments such as medication and psychological therapy. Therefore, the neurosurgery for psychiatric disorders (NPD) has been studied. While the efficacy of NPD has previously been reported and is currently being studied, it is not performed in Japan. We introduce the results of representative studies that investigated functional neurosurgery for AN. (Received May 22, 2020; Accepted November 20, 2020; Published

Pneumatosis intestinalis in anorexia nervosa.

We have read the article by Pérez-Santiago L et al. on the conservative or surgical management of pneumatosis intestinalis (PI). Recently we saw a case of a 18-year-old female diagnosed with anorexia nervosa who presented due to general malaise, asthenia, and inability to walk following an episode of abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea (10-15 stools daily, some of them bloody). Physical examination revealed signs of malnutrition and dehydration, and a distended, tender abdomen with no signs of peritoneal irritation. Laboratory chemistry tests revealed macrocytic anemia and metabolic alkalosi

ANGI - Anorexia Nervosa Genetics Initiative.

Identification of genetic variants associated with eating disorders is underway. The Anorexia Nervosa Genetics Initiative, an initiative of the Klarman Family Foundation, has contributed to advancing the field, yielding a large-scale genome-wide association study published in Nature Genetics. Eight genetic variants significantly associated with anorexia nervosa were identified, along with patterns of genetic correlations that suggest both psychiatric and metabolic origins of this serious and life-threatening illness. This article details the role of Professor Nick Martin in contributing to thi
