There are no guidelines for antibiotic prophylaxis for ureteral stent removal after kidney transplantation. We reviewed the charts of 277 adult kidney transplant recipients with ureteral stents transplanted at our center between September 2014 and December 2015 and investigated whether antibiotic prophylaxis for stent removal was associated with reduced incidence of urinary tract infections (UTI). We defined UTI as a urine culture ≥104 CFU/mL of bacterial isolates irrespective of symptoms. Primary outcome was the incidence of UTI within four weeks of stent removal. Among the 277 recipients, 1

OBJECTIVE: Early antibiotic administration has been associated with a significant decrease in infection following open fractures. However, antibiotics are most effective at a time when many patients are still being transported for care. There is limited evidence that antibiotics may be safely administered for open fractures when being transported by life-flight personnel. No such data exists for ground ambulance transport of patients with open fractures. The purpose of the study was to assess the safety and feasibility of prophylactic antibiotic delivery in the prehospital setting.

Background Guidelines for the appropriate use of antibiotic prophylaxis are provided in the Therapeutic Guidelines: Antibiotics (eTG) in Australia. Inappropriate use of antibiotics is problematic. Objective To examine adherence with therapeutic guidelines (eTG) in breast surgery and trends in non-adherence dependent on the type of breast surgery performed. Setting Major Western Australian teaching hospital. Method A retrospective cross-sectional study reviewed a random sample of 150 from 1049 eligible medical records of patients who underwent a breast surgical procedure in 2013 or 2014. Main o

BACKGROUND: Orthognathic surgery (OS) is a term that refers to many elective surgical techniques to correct facial deformity; the associated malocclusion and functional disorders related to the stomatognathic system. Whilst such surgery is classed as "clean-contaminated", the usefulness of and the most appropriate regimen for antibiotic prophylaxis in these patients are still debated.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of antibiotic prophylaxis for preventing surgical site infection (SSI) in people undergoing orthognathic surgery.
SEARCH METHODS: In June 2014, we searched the Cochrane Wounds

OBJECTIVE: To determine the potential economic impact from the practice of antibiotic prophylaxis for dental procedures.
STUDY DESIGN: We estimated the prevalence of patients in the United States with 15 medical conditions and devices. We multiplied the prevalence for each patient population by the percentage of specialists recommending prophylaxis, then by the estimated number of dental office visits per year, and then by an average pharmacy cost to arrive at a total estimated range of annual cost for this practice.
RESULTS: The 15 medical conditions and devices included in the present stud

The minimally invasive pain surgical procedures are more and more frequently used in the treatment and management of the chronic pain. The patients will often have recourse to a higher infection's risk during the proceedings for acquired general conditions (like enterotomy, skin ulcers, bladder catheter). The analysis literature doesn't produce specific treatment guidelines about antibiotic prophylaxis in pain therapy. This document, drawn up with multidisciplinary approach, correspond to rational, efficacy and functional guide about the choice and management of the antibiotic prophylaxis durin

BACKGROUND: The use of prophylactic antibiotics before endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is recommended by all major international gastroenterological societies, especially in the presence of an obstructed biliary system. Their use is intended to decrease or eliminate the incidence of complications following the procedure, namely cholangitis, cholecystitis, septicaemia, and pancreatitis.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the benefits and harms of antibiotics before elective ERCP in patients without evidence of acute or chronic cholecystitis, or acute or chronic cholangitis, or severe

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to assess whether patients receive their antibiotic prophylaxis as prescribed. We also investigated what doses and durations of antibiotics are typically ordered, which patients actually receive antibiotics and factors causing the ordered antibiotic regimen to be altered.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 205 patient charts and sent a national survey to all surgeon members of the Canadian Orthopaedic Trauma Society (COTS) about antibiotic prophylaxis in the setting of surgical treatment for closed fractures.
RESULTS: In all, 93% (179 of 19

In the present study, we analyze the efficacy of prophylaxis with meropenem in patients receiving a matched related donor allogeneic transplant. In total, 38 patients were sequentially treated with meropenem starting on the day of the first febrile episode (n=17, group A) vs prophylactic meropenem starting on the first day with <500/mm(3) granulocytes (n=21, group B), and maintained until resolution of fever or after granulocyte count >500/mm(3). Of these, 16 (94%) patients in group A developed fever as compared to 16 (76%) in group B (P=0.02). While only one patient in group A did not require

BACKGROUND: Two independent epidemiological studies recently suggested the prophylactic relevance of an intraocular antibiosis against endophthalmitis after cataract surgery. The resulting intervention programme, however, has not only ethical drawbacks, but also has a health economical dimension, which will be focussed in this paper.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cost analysis is performed to compare the direct costs saved by prevention of endophthalmitis cases and the costs generated by the prophylaxis itself. Furthermore, the clinics' indirect costs due to treatment of unprevented endophthalmitis

The efficacy of prophylactic antibiotics for preventing infectious complications at the site of pit viper envenomation has not been well studied. We undertook a prospective, controlled trial of antibiotic treatment versus no antibiotic treatment among 114 victims of crotalid envenomation in Ecuador's Amazon rain forest. A group of 59 patients received intravenous gentamicin and chloramphenicol, and 55 patients did not. All other aspects of care were identical. There were no statistically significant differences between antibiotic-treated and untreated patients with regard to demographics, dela

97 patients undergoing breast surgery received either 2 g cefotiam or 1200 mg clindamycin as i.v. singleshot application in the course of an open randomised comparison of parallel groups to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of both antibiotic regimens. Both regimens proved to be well to-lerated and equally suitable for the prophylaxis of postoperative infections in breast surgery.

BACKGROUND: There is little evidence supporting the efficacy of prophylactic antibiotics in preventing secondary cases of bacterial meningitis, and recent guidance extended the use of prophylactic antibiotics amongst children who attend pre-school groups.
METHODS: We examined the volume of rifampicin prescribed, and that recommended to contacts of cases of meningococcal and Hib meningitis in Somerset over a three-year period using case note records of the Consultant for Communicable Disease Control (CCDC) and PACT data.
RESULTS: There was evidence of excessive prescribing over and above that

The antibiotic sensitivity pattern of bacteria isolated from bacteraemia after dental extraction was compared with that of bacteria isolated from dental plaque samples from the same patient. The results supported the current practice of using penicillin and erythromycin empirically for prophylaxis. The prediction of the most appropriate antibiotic for prophylaxis using dental plaque samples was most accurate when the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of plaque isolates were used. It appears that a predictive test using dental plaque may be of some value in patients with recent or long-ter

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The pancreatoduodenectomy is a high-risk surgery, and its high morbidity rate is mostly related to postoperative infectious complications. Positive bile cultures are associated with both increased frequency and severity of pancreatic fistulas; this is more common in previously drained or infected bile ducts. The currently used antibiotic regimens for surgical prophylaxis appear insufficient to cover the microorganisms identified in bile cultures of patients previously submitted to biliary drainage. This study aims primarily to compare the rates of positive bile cultures

Perioperative antibiotic prescribing in dermatologic surgery remains highly variable and frequently extends beyond evidence-based indications despite the low incidence of surgical site infections. This 2-part continuing medical education article synthesizes current evidence to guide perioperative antibiotic decision-making. Part II focuses on antimicrobial stewardship, emphasizing practical strategies to improve prescribing and reduce unnecessary antibiotic use. Special attention is given to optimization of perioperative practices, patient-centered communication, and system-level stewardship i

BACKGROUND: Infections after augmentation mammoplasty are not uncommon, and prophylactic antibiotics are routinely administered to minimize infection. However, there is paucity of information on the relationship between the length of prophylaxis cover and its benefits in primary augmentation mammoplasty. A retrospective analysis of different antibiotic cover regimens, their effectiveness in preventing infections, and the management of infection in established cases is reviewed.
METHODS: A retrospective chart analysis of periprosthetic infections in primary augmentation mammoplasties performed

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The optimal antibiotic prophylaxis for mesh-based prolapse surgery remains uncertain. Although cefazolin is widely used, its limited anaerobic coverage may increase the risk of postoperative infections, particularly in women undergoing concomitant hysterectomy. Evidence from hysterectomy cohorts suggests that adding metronidazole reduces surgical-site infections, prompting evaluation of this approach in laparoscopic mesh-augmented apical prolapse repair. The objective was to compare postoperative infection rates in women receiving single-agent versus dual-agent pro
