OBJECTIVE: Appendiceal neoplasms (ANs) are rare tumors that are often discovered incidentally during histopathological examinations. The increasing incidence of ANs is a critical issue in the non-operative management of acute appendicitis. This study aimed to document the temporal trends over a 12-year period by analyzing the clinical presentation, imaging findings, and histopathological features of ANs.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Health records of patients who underwent appendectomy from 2011 to 2022 were examined. Demographic and clinical data, laboratory results, imaging findings, and histopath

Abdominal ultrasonography during a regular medical examination showed that a 70-year-old man had an approximately 10 cm cystic tumor in the lower abdomen. Abdominal computed tomography showed that the appendix had swollen to a size of 130 mm×44 mm. As no other tests suggested malignancy, the patient's condition was diagnosed as a low-grade appendiceal mucinous tumor and he underwent laparoscopic ileocecal resection and lymph node D2 dissection. Laparoscopic surgery was completed without damaging the tumor. There has been no recurrence after the operation for 2 years now.

INTRODUCTION: Appendiceal mucocele (AM) is a very rare neoplasm with an incidence of 0.2-0.3% of all appendectomy specimens. AM usually defined as an intraluminal dilation of the appendix in response to mucin accumulation. The preoperative diagnosis is difficult and can be misdiagnosed to any of the other differential diagnosis especially in female patients. If it is suspected, imaging modalities and colonoscopy can be helpful as a guide for the right surgical approach.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 41-year-old lady who found to have an appendicular tumor discovered incidentally on magnetic resonan

An appendiceal mucocele is a dilatation of the appendix and it is the result of benign or malignant diseases, which cause the obstruction of the appendix and the consequent accumulation of mucus secretion. The preoperative diagnosis is difficult due to non-specific clinical manifestations of the disease. We present a case of an 83-year-old female patient with a history of breast cancer that was referred to our hospital for an evaluation of a right adnexal mass discovered during her yearly follow-up. The patient underwent an exploratory laparotomy with a provisional diagnosis of a right adnexal

OBJECTIVE: Appendectomy is an extremely common surgical procedure usually performed for an inflammatory process within this organ. Upon occasion, the pathology within the appendix is a neoplastic process which requires definitive oncologic management.
METHODS: The optimal management strategies for appendiceal neoplasms were reviewed and pertinent literature critically evaluated. The technology for appendectomy for an inflammatory process and an appendectomy for a neoplastic process were compared and contrasted.
RESULTS: A new surgical procedure called "radical appendectomy" was described and

Mucoceles, commonly observed in the appendix, are mucin-filled, dilated structures arising from a range of etiologies. Cases associated with dysplastic or neoplastic epithelium can rupture and disseminate within the abdominopelvic cavity. Similar lesions in other parts of the colon are exceedingly rare, with only 16 colonic mucoceles having been reported. The first case of a colonic mucinous neoplasm with dysplasia resembling a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm involving rectal stump was described in 2016. Here, we present the second such case arising in the rectal stump, identified in a

BACKGROUND: Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) are a class of histologically well-differentiated adenomas that can proliferate outside the appendix in the form of malignant tumours, resulting in the accumulation of external appendiceal mucus. They may present as an extra-appendiceal mass-like bulge, mucus or polypoid tissue at the appendiceal orifice, or even with abdominal dissemination. The surgical approach is usually appendectomy, ileocecal resection or right hemicolectomy. It is essential to raise awareness of LAMNs and choose an appropriate treatment.

BACKGROUND: Low-grade (LG) mucinous carcinoma peritonei (LGMCP) arising from mucinous appendiceal neoplasms is typically treated with cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC). Although these patients can recur after CRS-HIPEC, the histology and outcomes of recurrence have not been well-documented.
METHODS: A retrospective study of CRS-HIPECs from 2007 to 2024 at our institution was performed for patients with LG primary and peritoneal histology. Recurrence was defined as LG or high-grade (HG), with HG histology defined as high-grade mucinous carcinoma pe

INTRODUCTION: As the nonoperative management of acute appendicitis becomes more widespread, identifying patients at high risk of appendiceal tumors is increasingly important. This study aimed to clarify the predictive factors of appendiceal tumors before appendectomy.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 434 patients diagnosed with acute appendicitis who underwent emergency or interval appendectomy.
RESULTS: Appendiceal neoplasms were found in 3.9% of patients. Patients with tumors were significantly older (64.4 vs. 49.6 years, p < 0.001). The tumor group exhibited a lower appendicolith inci

BACKGROUND/AIM: Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and intraperitoneal chemotherapy are standard treatments for the peritoneal spreading from appendiceal tumours. We aimed to assess and compare outcomes after CRS, with or without intraperitoneal chemotherapy, in patients with peritoneal spreading from appendiceal neoplasms and malignancies.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, we analysed prospectively collected data from patients with appendiceal tumours and peritoneal metastases who were treated with CRS and intraperitoneal chemotherapy. Survival analysis was performed to evaluate ov

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of targeted therapies for patients with pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) secondary to low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs). Dysregulated metabolism has emerged as a hallmark of cancer, and the relationship of metabolomics and cancer is an area of active scientific exploration. We sought to characterize phenotypic differences found in peritoneal metastases (PM) derived from LAMN versus adenocarcinoma.
METHODS: Tumors were washed with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), microdissected, then dissociated in ice-cold methanol dried and reconstituted in pyridine.

BACKGROUND: Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) are indolent tumors with low-grade cytology. Although peritoneal dissemination is common due to tumor rupture and mucinous deposits on the visceral peritoneal surface, distant involvement, such as lung, is rarely seen due to lack of invasiveness.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old woman presented to the hospital due to continuously elevated carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) levels for 10 months without any symptoms. PET/CT revealed two lesions located in the left lung and appendix. The postoperative pathology results revealed pulmonary m

BACKGROUND: Appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (AMN) is a rare tumor that may be successfully treated by appendectomy. However, some patients develop recurrence as pseudomyxoma peritonei. The present study investigated the recurrence rate after radial resection for AMN.
METHODS: A survey on AMN was sent to 171 institutions, and 286 cases were analyzed. The risk of recurrence was assessed according to clinical parameters. Recurrence rates were compared with data from the literature.
RESULTS: There were 250 cases in the low-grade group and 36 in the high-grade group, with perforation being detected

Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (AMNs) represent an infrequent type of appendiceal tumour, characterised by their potential for aggressive biological behaviour and the possibility of developing peritoneal carcinomatosis. There is still uncertainty about which variables can predict the clinical evolution and recurrence risk of this disease. The primary objective of this study is to reevaluate cases of AMN diagnosed at our institution to identify morphological and clinical factors that may serve as predictors of recurrence. A retrospective study of 49 patients diagnosed with AMN at tertiary hospi

BACKGROUND: Non-surgical treatment of appendicitis carries the risk of missed tumors, such as appendiceal neuroendocrine neoplasms (ANEN), the most common appendiceal tumor. The aim of this study is to identify radiological features of ANEN that will distinguish them from simple acute appendicitis.
METHODS: Data were extracted from a database of 8327 appendectomies conducted during 2005-2018. Pre-operative computerized tomography (CT) or ultrasound (US) scans of patients with ANEN and a random sample of patients with simple appendicitis were compared. Patients with other appendiceal tumors we

The German guideline for low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMN) and pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) offers comprehensive recommendations for diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance of these rare tumours. Developed by the German Society of General and Visceral Surgery (DGAV) alongside 14 other medical societies or task groups, this S2k-guideline addresses the need for standardised care in the absence of high-quality randomized controlled trials due to the rarity of LAMN and PMP. The guideline covers classification and staging of LAMN according to WHO and TNM systems, emphasising histologic

Epithelial tumors of the appendix refer to neoplastic lesions originating from the epithelial tissue of the appendix mucosa. These neoplasms exhibit highly heterogeneous pathological features and biological behavior, which contribute to their strong propensity for peritoneal metastasis. Currently, evidence-based medicine regarding appendiceal epithelial neoplasms and the management of their peritoneal metastasis is limited, leading to a lack of standardized clinical practices. To address this, the Professional Committee of Integrated Rehabilitation for Peritoneal Tumors of the Chinese Anti-Can

INTRODUCTION: Appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (AMN) are rare tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. They metastasize with widespread abdominal dissemination leading to pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), a disease with poor prognosis. There are many unknowns about the cellular features of origin, differentiation and progression of AMN and PMP.
METHODS: We characterized AMNs, PMPs and matched normal tissues using single-cell RNA-sequencing. We validated our findings with immunohistochemistry, mass spectrometry on malignant ascites from PMP patients and gene expression data from an independent set of P
