Dysfunctional eating in the eating disorders.

Aberrant eating patterns in the eating disorders have been observed across various laboratory-based and clinical studies. It is now clear that problems in experiencing and expressing hunger, appetite, and satiety in anorexia and bulimia nervosa are likely to perpetuate the disorders once established. Whether problems in appetite regulation are primary or secondary to the development of the disorders is unknown. In studies examining indices of appetite regulation after treatment, there still remain significant levels of eating abnormality. This suggests that the main goals of treatment, includi

The neural substrates of enhanced salt appetite after repeated sodium depletions.

Sodium appetite is associated with a form of behavioral plasticity in which animals experimentally depleted of sodium progressively increase their intake of hypertonic NaCl over several successive (on 2 to 4 occasions) depletion. The present experiment explored the nature of this plasticity by quantifying Fos immunoreactivity (Fos-ir) in structures implicated in the mediation of sodium appetite and in the signaling of reward. Rats were depleted of sodium with the diuretic furosemide three times (3F), one time (2V1F) or sham depleted (i.e., vehicle treated; 3V). Rats were given sodium appetite

Chronic ozone exposure does not alter sexual behavior but modulates oxidative stress and early testicular apoptosis in adult male rats.

Ozone (O₃) has been used to treat various diseases for many years, with most preclinical studies focusing on its effects in conditions such as testicular torsion and ischemia-reperfusion injury; however, its impact on male reproductive function, particularly sexual behavior, remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of chronic O3 exposure on sexual behavior, reproductive parameters, oxidative stress, and apoptosis in adult male rats. Animals were assigned to a vehicle group (n = 7), which received saline, or an O₃-treated group (n = 7), which received intraperitoneal

Parental behavior in the mouse: effects of lesions in the entorhinal/piriform cortex.

The effects of bilateral radiofrequency lesions in the region of the entorhinal and piriform cortex (ENT/PIR cortex) on pup-retrieving and ultrasound-elicited pup-searching behavior were investigated in ovariectomized estrogen-treated female mice, which were sensitized to pups by co-caring for a litter for 5 days together with the mother (FoEBex), as well as in primiparous lactating females (Flact). A further group of FoEBex were rendered anosmic by an intranasal treatment with zinc sulfate-solution before the sensitization period and tests for parental motivation. Both pup-retrieving and pup-

Small-for-gestational-age and eating problems in infants aged 2.5 years: a nationwide population-based study in Japan.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between small-for-gestational-age (SGA) status and eating behaviors in infants. METHODS: Data from a large nationwide population-based longitudinal survey in Japan that began in 2010 was analyzed. The study participants were preterm and term children aged 2.5 years with information on eating behaviors (n = 32,096). SGA was defined as birth weight below the 10th percentile for GA, based on the Japanese reference value for birth size. Poisson regression was used to estimate the risk ratios (RRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) for the associations betwe

Decision making and executive functions in problematic pornography use.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research on cognitive functions in Compulsive Sexual Behavior Disorder (CSBD) and problematic pornography use (PPU) reported inconsistent findings and mostly included sexual pictures in the used tasks. The role of general executive functions and cognitive competences (without the presence of appetitive stimuli) in the context of PPU is largely unexplored. METHODS: This study investigated differences between individuals with high versus low problem severity of PPU regarding decision making and executive functions. The sample of the laboratory study consisted of N = 102 m

Environmental-like exposure to low levels of estrogen affects sexual behavior and physiology of female rats.

Xenoestrogens are endocrine-disrupting chemicals that mimic the action of endogenous estrogen hormones. Effects of xenoestrogen on aquatic wildlife are well documented, whereas the experimental evidence for impairment of reproductive behavior and physiology in mammals after exposure to xenoestrogens has been debated. The strongest arguments against such studies have been that the route, time course, and intensity of exposure did not simulate environmental exposure and that the chemicals tested have additional nonestrogenic toxic effects, hindering generalization of actual xenoestrogenic effect

A home-based progressive-ratio task for assessing food reinforcement in infancy: Developmental sensitivity at 9 and 12 months.

The relative reinforcing value of food (RRVFood) is theorized to emerge early and contribute to obesity risk. We examined whether a matched set of solid foods elicited differentiation between food and nonfood reinforcement at 9 (n = 110) and 12 (n = 133) months of age. We hypothesized that infants would respond for both reinforcers at both age points with enough variability for individual-differences analyses, and that RRVFood would relate to food consumption, appetitive traits, and weight-for-length z-score (WLZ) more strongly at 12 months. In a longitudinal subsample (n = 70), we further hyp

Moderate developmental alcohol exposure reduces repetitive alternation in a zebrafish model of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

The damaging effects of alcohol on a developing fetus are well known and cause a range of conditions known as fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). High levels of alcohol exposure lead to physical deformity and severe cognitive deficits, but more moderate exposure leads to a range of subtle cognitive effects such as reduced social behavior, higher propensity to develop addictions, and reduced spatial working memory. Previous studies have demonstrated that following exposure to relatively low levels of ethanol during early brain development (equivalent in humans to moderate exposure) zebrafis

Association Between Appetite and Physical Activity in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: Focusing on Activity Intensity and Duration.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Decreased appetite in older adults is associated with physical activity. Prior research findings have been inconsistent or limited due to methodological differences. Many studies did not adequately control for psychological or social confounders on appetite. Therefore, we aimed to assess the relationships among appetite, physical activity, psychological factors, and social factors in community-dwelling older adults. We investigated how physical activity intensity and time of day could be associated with appetite. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 100 communit

Influence of morphine sensitization on the responsiveness of mesolimbic and mesocortical dopamine transmission to appetitive and aversive gustatory stimuli.

RATIONALE: Repeated treatment with morphine has been shown to sensitize rats to its stimulant effects on motor activity and mesolimbic dopamine (DA) transmission. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to investigate if morphine sensitization is associated to changes in the behavioral reactions to appetitive and aversive taste stimuli and in the response of in vivo DA transmission in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) shell and core and medial prefrontal cortex (PFCX) to the same stimuli. METHODS: Rats were administered twice a day for three consecutive days with increasing doses of morphine [10, 20,

Effects of intensive lifestyle interventions with calorie-carbohydrate-restricted diet versus time-restricted eating on appetite and binge eating in type 2 diabetes: A randomized controlled trial.

The impact of intensive lifestyle interventions on appetite regulation and binge eating in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) remains unclear. This study evaluated the effects of combined lifestyle interventions on appetite responses and binge eating in overweight or obese adults with T2D. In a randomized trial, 120 participants with T2D were allocated to three groups (n = 40 each): (1) Calorie-carbohydrate restriction (CCR), (2) Time-restricted eating with CCR (TRE + CCR), or (3) Control. Intervention groups received structured exercise and behavioral education based on the Information-Mo

Formation and fate of an engram in the lateral amygdala supporting a rewarding memory in mice.

Memories allow past experiences to guide future decision making and behavior. Sparse ensembles of neurons, known as engrams, are thought to store memories in the brain. Most previous research has focused on engrams supporting threatening or fearful memories where results show that neurons involved in a particular engram ("engram neurons") are both necessary and sufficient for memory expression. Far less is understood about engrams supporting appetitive or rewarding memories. As circumstances and environments are dynamic, the fate of a previously acquired engram with changing circumstances is u

Repetitive behavior profile and supersensitivity to amphetamine in the C58/J mouse model of autism.

Restricted repetitive behaviors are core symptoms of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). The range of symptoms encompassed by the repetitive behavior domain includes lower-order stereotypy and self-injury, and higher-order indices of circumscribed interests and cognitive rigidity. Heterogeneity in clinical ASD profiles suggests that specific manifestations of repetitive behavior reflect differential neuropathology. The present studies utilized a set of phenotyping tasks to determine a repetitive behavior profile for the C58/J mouse strain, a model of ASD core symptoms. In an observational screen

Early-Life Exposure to Pulsed LTE Radiofrequency Fields Causes Persistent Changes in Activity and Behavior in C57BL/6 J Mice.

Despite much research, gaps remain in knowledge about the potential health effects of exposure to radiofrequency (RF) fields. This study investigated the effects of early-life exposure to pulsed long term evolution (LTE) 1,846 MHz downlink signals on innate mouse behavior. Animals were exposed for 30 min/day, 5 days/week at a whole-body average specific energy absorption rate (SAR) of 0.5 or 1 W/kg from late pregnancy (gestation day 13.5) to weaning (postnatal day 21). A behavioral tracking system measured locomotor, drinking, and feeding behavior in the home cage from 12 to 28 weeks of age. T

Repeated and chronic administration of Vardenafil or Sildenafil differentially affects emotional and socio-sexual behavior in mice.

Selective phosphodiesterases (PDEs) inhibitors have been widely studied as therapeutic agents for treatment of various human diseases, including cardiotonics, vasodilators, smooth muscle relaxants, antidepressants, antithrombotics, antiasthmatics, and agents for improving learning and memory. Although Sildenafil(®) and Vardenafil(®) have similar chemical formulae, the same target and interact with many of the same residues at the active site of phosphodiesterse-5 (PDE-5), they exhibit both in vitro and in vivo some important functional differences that could differentially affect behavior. The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor paroxetine does not alter consummatory concentration-dependent licking of prototypical taste stimuli by rats.

Serotonin and the 5HT(1A) receptor are expressed in a subset of taste receptor cells, and the 5HT(3) receptor is expressed on afferent fibers innervating taste buds. Exogenous administration of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, paroxetine, has been shown to increase taste sensitivity to stimuli described by humans as sweet and bitter. Serotonergic agonists also decrease food and fluid intake, and it is possible that modulations of serotonin may alter taste-based hedonic responsiveness; alternatively, or in combination, serotonin may interact with physiological state to impact ingesti
