Data-driven analysis of gaze patterns in face perception: Methodological and clinical contributions.

Gaze patterns during face perception have been shown to relate to psychiatric symptoms. Standard analysis of gaze behavior includes calculating fixations within arbitrarily predetermined areas of interest. In contrast to this approach, we present an objective, data-driven method for the analysis of gaze patterns and their relation to diagnostic test scores. This method was applied to data acquired in an adult sample (N = 111) of psychiatry outpatients while they freely looked at images of human faces. Dimensional symptom scores of autism, attention deficit, and depression were collected. A lin

Changes of volume substitution for the treatment of hemorrhage within 10 years and their costs.

Whereas 10 years ago blood loss was substituted by whole blood application together with colloidal or crystalloid substitutes, this behavior changed to a distinct therapy according to the changed laboratory parameters with the application of red cell concentrates together with fresh frozen plasma (FFP). By means of two representative operations (resection of sigma and hemicolectomy) the behavior of volume application and the substitution of blood and blood components were controlled for the years 1980 and compared with the behavior of 1990. In addition to that the costs for both behaviors were

Spatial distribution and cluster analysis of retail drug shop characteristics and antimalarial behaviors as reported by private medicine retailers in western Kenya: informing future interventions.

BACKGROUND: Efforts to improve malaria case management in sub-Saharan Africa have shifted focus to private antimalarial retailers to increase access to appropriate treatment. Demands to decrease intervention cost while increasing efficacy requires interventions tailored to geographic regions with demonstrated need. Cluster analysis presents an opportunity to meet this demand, but has not been applied to the retail sector or antimalarial retailer behaviors. This research conducted cluster analysis on medicine retailer behaviors in Kenya, to improve malaria case management and inform future inte

Spectral coarse graining and rescaling for preserving structural and dynamical properties in graphs.

We introduce a graph renormalization procedure based on the coarse-grained Laplacian, which generates reduced-complexity representations across scales. This method retains both dynamics and large-scale topological structures, while reducing redundant information, facilitating the analysis of large graphs by decreasing the number of vertices. Applied to graphs derived from electroencephalogram recordings of human brain activity, our approach reveals collective behavior emerging from neuronal interactions, such as coordinated neuronal activity. Additionally, it shows dynamic reorganization of br

Behavioral phenotyping identifies autism-like repetitive stereotypies in a Tsc2 haploinsufficient rat model.

Besides deficits in social communication and interaction, repetitive behavior patterns are core manifestations of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Phenotypes are heterogeneous and can range from simple lower-order motor stereotypies to more complex higher-order cognitive inflexibility and fixated interests. Due to ASD's multifaceted etiology, animal models are often generated from monogenic diseases associated with ASD, such as Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC), and are expected to copy behavioral core deficits to increase the model´s translational value for ASD disease research and novel treatm

Biomechanical behavior of implant-abutment complex made of titanium, zirconia, carbon-fiber-reinforced PEEK, glass-fiber-reinforced PEEK, and PEKK versus four different bony structure configurations: A 3D finite element analysis study.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Implant-abutment complex material and bone density are 2 important factors for long term success of implant therapy. Titanium has been used for many years; however, stress shielding associated with it led to the introduction of other material such as zirconia, carbon-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CF-PEEK), glass-reinforced polyetheretherketone (GF-PEEK), and polyetherketoneketone (PEKK). Studies evaluating biomechanical behavior of different implant-abutment complex material in different bone densities are lacking. PURPOSE: The aim of the current study was to evaluate

Creep contributes to the fatigue behavior of bovine trabecular bone.

Repetitive, low-intensity loading from normal daily activities can generate fatigue damage in trabecular bone, a potential cause of spontaneous fractures of the hip and spine. Finite element models of trabecular bone (Guo et al., 1994) suggest that both creep and slow crack growth contribute to fatigue failure. In an effort to characterize these damage mechanisms experimentally, we conducted fatigue and creep tests on 85 waisted specimens of trabecular bone obtained from 76 bovine proximal tibiae. All applied stresses were normalized by the previously measured specimen modulus. Fatigue tests w

Formulation and Release Kinetics of Neomycin Sulfate from a Polymeric Oil-in-Water Emulgel for Topical Application: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

This proof-of-concept study aimed to develop and characterize a polymeric oil-in-water emulgel containing neomycin sulfate for topical application, using chitosan and methylcellulose as gelling agents, Tween 80 as emulsifier, and sweet almond oil as the oily phase. The novelty of the study lies in the formulation of a chitosan-methylcellulose oil-in-water emulgel for a highly hydrophilic aminoglycoside antibiotic, together with the integrated evaluation of its microstructure, rheological behavior, hydration capacity, and release kinetics. The formulation was evaluated in terms of physicochemic

Lifestyle Patterns in the Late Postoperative Period of Bariatric Surgery: a Descriptive Analysis of the CINTO Study.

BACKGROUND: The behavior of patients undergoing metabolic bariatric surgery (MBS) has been widely investigated to better understand their attitudes and to formulate effective advisory strategies. Although these elements have been studied separately, the magnitude of these behaviors still needs to be determined from a combined factors approach. This study aimed to identify the lifestyle patterns of patients who underwent MBS 5 or more years ago. METHODS: In this observational study, 123 patients who underwent MBS at least 5 years ago were included. Anthropometric data, sociodemographic profile

The multistate life table method: an application to contraceptive switching behavior.

In many demographic behaviors (e.g., those relating to marriage, contraception, migration, and health), people change among multiple statuses through time, sometimes leaving and then returning to the same status. Data on such behaviors are often collected in surveys as censored event histories. The multistate life table (MSLT) can be used to properly describe, in a single analysis, these complex transitions among multiple states measured in such data, but MSLT is rarely applied in the demographic literature because practical guidance is lacking on how to compute MSLTs with such data. We provid

Asymmetric Modulation of Brain Connectivity by Anodal Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in Healthy Individuals: A Single-Blind, Randomized Sham-Controlled Trial.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) has shown asymmetric behavioral effects, though the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms remain unclear. In this preliminary study with 34 healthy individuals, tDCS was applied to either the left or right DLPFC or a sham group. Behavioral and neurophysiological changes were examined by the Stroop test and resting-state fMRI, respectively, which were measured before and after a 15-min tDCS session. Seed-to-voxel connectivity analysis with seeds placed under the tDCS target regions (F3 and F4

Individual differences in ethanol drinking meal structure are shaped by social environments.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is marked by substantial heterogeneity in drinking behaviors and health outcomes, underscoring the need for preclinical models that capture interindividual variability. We recently developed open-source capacitive lickometer systems for high-resolution monitoring of mouse fluid intake. Using LIQ PARTI and LIQ HD, we found substantial individual differences in alcohol intake that varied across sex and housing status in C57Bl6/J mice. Here, we conducted a secondary analysis of this continuous access ethanol drinking data to quantify behavioral variability in group and

[Violence and post-traumatic stress disorder in childhood].

This study presents the prevalence of symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in 500 schoolchildren (6-13 years old) in São Gonçalo, Rio de Janeiro. It also investigates the association between PTSD, violence and other adverse events in the lives of these children. The multi-stage cluster sampling strategy involved three selection stages. Parents were interviewed about their children's behavior. The instrument used to screen symptoms of PTSD was the Child Behavior Checklist-Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Scale (CBCL-PTSD). Conflict Tactics Scales (CTS) were applied to evaluate family v

DISSeCT: An unsupervised framework for high-resolution mapping of rodent behavior using inertial sensors.

Decomposing behavior into elementary components remains a central challenge in computational neuroethology. The current standard in laboratory animals involves multi-view video tracking, which, while providing unparalleled access to full-body kinematics, imposes environmental constraints, is data-intensive, and has limited scalability. We present an alternative approach using inertial sensors, which capture high-resolution, environment-independent, compact 3D kinematic data, and are commonly integrated into rodent neurophysiological devices. Our analysis pipeline leverages unsupervised, comput
