BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders, including chronic back pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia, are leading causes of chronic pain and reduced quality of life. Standard treatment approaches often focus on physical symptoms, while psychosomatic factors are sometimes overlooked. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of adjunct psychosomatic interventions-guided meditation and aromatherapy-on pain perception, stress levels, and quality of life in patients with musculoskeletal disorders.
METHODS: This is a three-arm, prospective, randomized controlled trial con

IMPORTANCE: Intradetrusor chemodenervation with onabotulinumtoxinA (BOTOX) injections, a common office-based procedure for overactive bladder (OAB), is associated with patient anxiety and discomfort. Aromatherapy and music have been shown to decrease procedure-related anxiety and pain with improved satisfaction.
OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to determine whether a relaxing environment consisting of lavender aromatherapy, calming music, and dim lighting compared with a typical office environment decreases patients' anxiety level before undergoing intradetrusor chemodenervation.

Adequate sleep is vital for recovery in patients with critical illness, yet sleep in intensive care units (ICUs) is widely disrupted. Although various non-pharmacological strategies have been proposed, evidence remains inconsistent, and the most effective intervention for improving ICU sleep has not been clearly established. In this review, we evaluated the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions for sleep promotion and identified the most effective strategies for improving sleep quality among ICU patients. Studies implementing non-pharmacological sleep-promoting interventions and e

The birth of a child is a critical and potentially traumatic experience for women, entailing multiple physiological and psychosocial changes. The psychological effects of childbirth pain can have both immediate and long-term effects on the mother's health and her bond with her child. Many studies investigated the different ranges of synthetic drugs available for pain control in labour, inclusive of neuraxial analgesics, inhaled analgesics, and various opioids. The inadequate efficacy and unfavourable side effects of these synthetic drugs prevent appropriate pharmacotherapy, resulting in a ques

Background: Depression ranks among the most severe mental health conditions, and poses a burden on global health. Agarwood, an aromatic medicinal plant, has shown potential for improving mental symptoms. As a common folk medicine, agarwood has been applied as an alternative method for mental disorders such as depression through aromatherapy. Previous studies have found that the therapeutic effects of agarwood aromatherapy are primarily related to its volatile components. This study aimed to examine the antidepressant properties and underlying mechanisms of agarwood essential oil (AEO), a colle

OBJECTIVE: A majority of menstruating women experience some degree of regular recurrences of diverse symptoms-commonly known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS)-during the days before menstruation. Given the multifactorial etiology of PMS, no single treatment is universally recognized as effective, and many women turn to alternative modalities, including aromatherapy. The present study investigated therapeutic effects on premenstrual symptoms using fragrance from yuzu, a Japanese citrus fruit (Citrus junos Sieb. ex Tanaka), and aromatherapy, from the perspective of autonomic nervous system function

Essential oils (EOs) are a volatile mixture of bioactive compounds extracted from aromatic plants. The composition of EOs varies, which majorly depends on the extraction methods and plant parts. Aromatherapy using EOs has been reported for its several beneficial effects in humans. Aromatherapy is considered a complementary and/ or adjuvant therapeutic approach for treating several illnesses, especially to improve mental health and well-being. The incidence of sleep disorders, specifically insomnia, is nowadays increased, possibly due to urbanization and lifestyle. The studies showed that EOs-b

Sleep disturbances are common among institutionalized older adults, yet the optimal nonpharmacological intervention remains unclear. We performed a systematic review and network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials to compare nonpharmacological interventions for sleep quality. Five databases were searched from inception to March 30, 2025. Treatment effects were synthesized using random-effects models, and certainty of evidence was evaluated using the Confidence in Network Meta-Analysis framework. Eighteen RCTs (1208 participants; 12 interventions) were included in the systematic revie

INTRODUCTION: Post-acute 2019 coronavirus disease syndrome (PACS) is a multifaceted, multisystem disorder affecting an estimated 75 million individuals globally (in May 2024). Defined by symptoms persisting beyond four weeks post-infection, PACS manifests in subacute (4-12 weeks) and chronic (>12 weeks) phases, with fatigue being a prominent and debilitating feature. Comprehensive management of PACS-associated fatigue needs diverse therapeutic strategies extending beyond conventional rehabilitation.
AIM: This narrative review explored non-conventional interventions for PACS-related fatigue, f

As life pressure mounts, depression cases surge. Conventional antidepressants have limited efficacy and notable side effects. Chuanxiong, a traditional Chinese medicine, orally benefits the nervous system. This study combines traditional aromatherapy with targeted therapy by utilizing small molecular volatile components that quickly enter the brain via the olfactory pathway to investigate the impact of inhaling Chuanxiong volatile oil on depressed mice. We identified the components of Chuanxiong volatile oil, predicted pathways and targets for its antidepressant effects, and elucidated mechani

This article describes a detailed, validated protocol for a Thai traditional medicine (TTM) based care program developed for older adults with moderate depressive symptoms. Developed from TTM principles and contemporary evidence, the 7-week program integrates three modalities sequentially in weekly 60-minute sessions: herbal steam therapy (30 min), followed by combined receptive music therapy (slow-tempo, ∼60 bpm) and lavender aromatherapy oil massage (30 min total). The method underwent rigorous validation, including content validity assessment by experts (CVI=0.89), feasibility testing in a
