Bartonella and Rickettsia in arthropods from the Lao PDR and from Borneo, Malaysia.

Rickettsioses and bartonelloses are arthropod-borne diseases of mammals with widespread geographical distributions. Yet their occurrence in specific regions, their association with different vectors and hosts and the infection rate of arthropod-vectors with these agents remain poorly studied in South-east Asia. We conducted entomological field surveys in the Lao PDR (Laos) and Borneo, Malaysia by surveying fleas, ticks, and lice from domestic dogs and collected additional samples from domestic cows and pigs in Laos. Rickettsia felis was detected by real-time PCR with similar overall flea infec

Environmental forensic entomology: using carrion arthropods as information sentinels in ecological and forensic contexts.

The use of arthropods in a medicolegal framework is well-known and widely adopted in forensic death investigations. Typically, the life cycle and community composition of carrion arthropods can be used to establish a timeframe of events occurring after the death of an individual. However, because of their unique life strategies (eg the precise detection, location, and exploitation of ephemeral resources) and high dispersal abilities as adults, carrion arthropods can reveal much more information than meets the eye. In recent years, carrion arthropods have revealed important biological and chemi

Vegetation and Soil Surface Arthropods in Mediterranean Vineyards with Different Interrow Cover Crop Combinations.

Interrow cover crops have been increasingly adopted in Mediterranean vineyards to improve soil conservation and other ecosystem services. However, their long-term effects on vegetation dynamics and soil surface arthropod communities remain poorly understood. A study was conducted over three sampling years (2017, 2018 and 2023) in the Douro Demarcated Region (northeastern Portugal) to evaluate, one, two, and seven years after establishment, differences associated with two sown cover crop mixtures, namely a sown legume mixture (LEG) and a sown mixture of legumes and grasses (LEGRA) and spontaneo

Current usage of nomenclature for parasitic diseases, with special reference to those involving arthropods.

Terminological confusion has been aggravated by efforts to develop a standardized nomenclature for parasitic diseases (SNOPAD) arising from the proposal by Kassai et al., 1988) for a standardized nomenclature of animal diseases (SNOAPAD). To restabilize international nomenclature of parasitic diseases it is recommended that, whenever appropriate, names should follow the 'International Nomenclature of Diseases' (IND) compiled by the Council for International Organizations for Medical Sciences (CIOMS/WHO, 1987). For diseases not included in IND, familiarity should guide the choice of name: tradi

Land Use Mediates Long-Term Arthropod Functional Change.

Global change reshapes arthropod communities, yet long-term effects on their functional diversity remain unclear. Using a long-term dataset comprising > 1.3 million individuals of 728 carabid and spider species, we quantified temporal trends in functional diversity across forests, grasslands and croplands. Trajectories diverged strongly among land uses: functional richness increased in forests and grasslands but declined sharply in croplands. In forests, communities became more specialised and less redundant, suggesting increasing niche differentiation, but experienced greater functional richn

Tick cells as a tractable arthropod model for studying Orientia tsutsugamushi.

Orientia tsutsugamushi (Ot), the causative agent of scrub typhus, is an obligate intracellular bacterium naturally maintained in Leptotrombidium mites, yet its interactions within arthropod hosts remain poorly understood. Here, we employed two tick cell lines, Ixodes scapularis ISE6 and Rhipicephalus microplus BME/CTVM23, as arthropod models to investigate the intracellular lifecycle of Ot strains TA686 and Karp. Both strains efficiently infected tick cells and replicated within them, with ISE6 supporting more robust growth. Electron microscopy images revealed that Ot maintains its characteris

Identification of an arthropod molecular target for plant-derived natural repellents.

Arthropods maintain ecosystem balance while also contributing to the spread of disease. Plant-derived natural repellents represent an ecological method of pest control, but their direct molecular targets in arthropods remain to be further elucidated. Occupying a critical phylogenetic niche in arthropod evolution, scorpions retain an ancestral genetic profile. Here, using a behavior-guided screening of the Mesobuthus martensii genome, we identified a scorpion transient receptor potential (sTRP1) channel that senses Cymbopogon-derived natural repellents, while remaining insensitive to the synthe

On the problematic placement of the fossil arthropod Devonopilio hutchinsoni in Opiliones (Arachnida).

Harvestmen (Arachnida: Opiliones) were among the earliest terrestrial arthropods but their unmineralized exoskeletons are scarce and often fragmentary as fossils (Palencia et al. 2019). Consequently, the discovery and interpretations of fossil harvestmen from the early Palaeozoic can have disproportionate effects on the understanding of evolution in Opiliones. Recently, Devonopilio hutchinsoni Tihelka, Tian Cai, 2020, was described as a new fossil harvestman from the well-known Rhynie chert deposits of Scotland, an important source of information on freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems of the

Identification of diverse arthropod associated viruses in native Australian fleas.

Fleas are important vectors of zoonotic disease. However, little is known about the natural diversity and abundance of flea viruses, particularly in the absence of disease associations, nor the evolutionary relationships among those viruses found in different parasitic vector species. Herein, we present the first virome scale study of fleas, based on the meta-transcriptomic analysis of 52 fleas collected along the eastern coast of Australia. Our analysis revealed 18 novel RNA viruses belonging to nine viral families with diverse genome organizations, although the majority (72%) possessed singl

Subolesin/Akirin vaccines for the control of arthropod vectors and vectorborne pathogens.

Diseases transmitted by arthropod vectors such as mosquitoes, ticks and sand flies greatly impact human and animal health, and therefore, their control is important for the eradication of vectorborne diseases (VBD). Vaccination is an environmentally friendly alternative for vector control that allows control of several VBD by targeting their common vector. Recent results have suggested that subolesin (SUB) and its orthologue in insects, akirin (AKR) are good candidate antigens for the control of arthropod vector infestations and pathogen infection. SUB was discovered as a tick-protective antig

Non-structural proteins of arthropod-borne bunyaviruses: roles and functions.

Viruses within the Bunyaviridae family are tri-segmented, negative-stranded RNA viruses. The family includes several emerging and re-emerging viruses of humans, animals and plants, such as Rift Valley fever virus, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus, La Crosse virus, Schmallenberg virus and tomato spotted wilt virus. Many bunyaviruses are arthropod-borne, so-called arboviruses. Depending on the genus, bunyaviruses encode, in addition to the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase and the different structural proteins, one or several non-structural proteins. These non-structural proteins are not always

Cat scratch disease and arthropod vectors: more to it than a scratch?

PURPOSE: Cat scratch disease is a common infection, particularly in children, and clinicians need to be aware of its potential transmission to humans by arthropod vectors such as fleas and ticks in addition to animal bites and scratches. The absence of a vertebrate bite or scratch does not preclude infection with Bartonella henselae. METHODS: Literature regarding arthropod transmission of B. henselae was reviewed. RESULTS: B. henselae and related bacterial species are transmitted among cats and dogs by arthropod vectors. In the absence of these vectors, disease does not spread amongst the an

[Arthropod-borne parasites of dogs, especially Leishmania, in the Kosovo and Albania].

Currently no information is available regarding canine arthropod-borne parasites in Albania and the Kosovo, especially the zoonotic protozoan Leishmania infantum. Presumably autochtonous cases of human leishmaniosis have been described for some areas (Kosovo: Ferizaj, Gjakovo, Pec, Malisevo; Albania: Tirana, Durres, Elbasan, Shkodra, Vlore). In order to investigate the infection status of dogs of different origin sera from 272 animals (151 from Albania - Tirana, Kamza and Durres; 121 from the Kosovo - Gjakovo, Ferizaj and Prishtina) were obtained. Corresponding blood samples were available fro

[Climate change influences the incidence of arthropod-borne diseases in the Netherlands].

Climate change is associated with changes in the occurrence of arthropod-borne diseases. It is difficult to foresee which arthropod-borne diseases will appear in the Netherlands due to climate change. Climate change influences the prevalence of ticks and may lead to a further increase in Lyme disease and an increased risk of the introduction of rickettsioses. With further warming of the climate there is a real possibility of settlement of the mosquito Aedes albopictus and introduction of the sandfly in the Netherlands. Whether this will lead to circulation of micro-organisms transmitted by the
