Articulatory undershoot of vowels in isolated REM sleep behavior disorder and early Parkinson's disease.

Imprecise vowels represent a common deficit associated with hypokinetic dysarthria resulting from a reduced articulatory range of motion in Parkinson's disease (PD). It is not yet unknown whether the vowel articulation impairment is already evident in the prodromal stages of synucleinopathy. We aimed to assess whether vowel articulation abnormalities are present in isolated rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder (iRBD) and early-stage PD. A total of 180 male participants, including 60 iRBD, 60 de-novo PD and 60 age-matched healthy controls performed reading of a standardized passage. The

Speech Correction for Children with Cleft Lip and Palate by Networking of Community-Based Care.

BACKGROUND: Prevalence of cleft lip and palate (CLP) is high in Northeast Thailand. Most children with CLP face many problems, particularly compensatory articulation disorders (CAD) beyond surgery while speech services and the number of speech and language pathologists (SLPs) are limited. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of networking of Khon Kaen University (KKU) Community-Based Speech Therapy Model: Kosumphisai Hospital, Kosumphisai District and Maha Sarakham Hospital, Mueang District, Maha Sarakham Province for reduction of the number of articulations errors for children with CLP.

Developmental apraxia: diagnostic considerations.

This study compares the performance of developmentally apraxic children with that of children who have functional articulation disorders on a battery of diagnostic tests. Based on preliminary data, tests which assess auditory attention, auditory discrimination, auditory memory, oral-tactile feedback, and isolated and sequenced volitional oral movements appear to be useful in a differential diagnosis of articulatory defective children and, thus, warrant further study. Implications of these findings are discussed.

Effectiveness of Telehealth-Based Speech Therapy in Improving Articulation, Resonance, Nasal Emission, and Intelligibility in Children With Repaired Cleft lip and Palate: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is a prevalent congenital anomaly associated with persistent speech disorders, including articulation errors, resonance imbalances, and nasal emission, despite surgical repair. Access to specialized speech-language pathologist care remains limited, particularly in remote and underserved regions. Telehealth has emerged as a scalable solution, yet systematic evidence on its efficacy, technological reliability, and implementation in CLP-specific speech therapy is lacking. AIMS: This systematic review critically evaluates the effectiveness of telehealth-base

Phonological processing skills of adolescents with residual speech sound errors.

PURPOSE: Research has shown that young children with speech sound disorders may have weaknesses in phonological processing. However, such skills have not been thoroughly examined in adolescents with residual speech sound errors. Therefore, this study compared the phonological processing abilities of adolescents with residual speech sound errors to those of normally speaking peers. METHOD: Two nonword repetition tasks, multisyllabic word repetition, spoonerisms, phoneme reversals, and an elision task were used to compare the phonological processing skills of 10-14-year-olds with residual speec

Articulatory Correlates of Stress Pattern Disturbances in Talkers With Dysarthria.

Purpose Reduced stress commonly occurs in talkers with Parkinson's disease (PD), whereas excessive and equal stress is frequently associated with dysarthria of talkers with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and multiple sclerosis (MS). This study sought to identify articulatory impairment patterns that underlie these two impaired stress patterns. We further aimed to determine if talkers with the same stress pattern disturbance but different diseases (ALS and MS) exhibit disease-specific articulatory deficits. Method Fifty-seven talkers participated in the study-33 talkers with dysarthria and

Understanding Nasal Emission During Speech Production: A Review of Types, Terminology, and Causality.

There are several different types of nasal emission that can occur during speech due to either velopharyngeal dysfunction or abnormal articulation in the pharynx. Nasal emission can be inaudible or very loud and distracting, depending on the size of the velopharyngeal opening and the physics of the flow. Nasal emission can be obligatory and/or compensatory (due to abnormal structure) or it can be caused by a misarticulation that results in a substitution of a pharyngeal sound for an oral sound, despite normal velopharyngeal structure. Nasal emission can occur on all pressure-sensitive phonemes

Epilogue: what we know about nonspeech oral motor exercises.

A great deal of information is available to help clinicians understand the principles of motor speech learning and control, and how to apply those principles to clinical practice. In addition, the results of many investigations have documented the differences between the motor movements for speech and nonspeech tasks. Finally, supporting evidence for using nonspeech tasks to improve speech is virtually nonexistent. All of that information, taken in concert, casts doubt on the use of nonspeech techniques for improving children's speaking skills. However, clinicians have available a variety of v

Phonological or orthographic training for children with phonological or orthographic decoding deficits.

In a longitudinal intervention study, Swedish reading disabled children in grades 2-3 received either a phonological (n = 41) or an orthographic (n = 39) training program. Both programs were computerized and interventions took place in ordinary school settings with trained special instruction teachers. Two comparison groups, ordinary special instruction and normal readers, were also included in the study. Results showed strong average training effects on text reading and general word decoding for both phonological and orthographic training, but not significantly higher improvements than for th

Dyslexia and the anchoring-deficit hypothesis.

The 'core deficit' of dyslexia has been characterized by different researchers in terms of either phonological impairments or of difficulties in processing basic visual and auditory stimuli. Recent findings suggest that a single type of impairment in the dynamics of perception, which affects the efficiency of short-term memory, might underlie the broad range of difficulties of dyslexics. Experimental findings show that the general population quickly and automatically tunes around incoming stimuli, 'anchors to them' and performs faster and more accurately when these stimuli are subsequently rep

A comparison of three therapy methods for children with different types of developmental phonological disorder.

Treatment case studies of three children whose speech was characterized by non-developmental errors are described. Three therapy methods were trialed with each child: phonological contrast; core vocabulary and PROMPT. The accuracy and intelligibility of the children's connected speech improved throughout the course of the programme. Intervention that focused on teaching a rule about the contrastive use of phonemes was most successful for a child who consistently made non-developmental errors. Children making inconsistent errors received most benefit from the core vocabulary approach that marke

Ultrasound visual feedback in articulation therapy following partial glossectomy.

UNLABELLED: Disordered speech is common following treatment for tongue cancer, however there is insufficient high quality evidence to guide clinical decision making about treatment. This study investigated use of ultrasound tongue imaging as a visual feedback tool to guide tongue placement during articulation therapy with two participants following partial glossectomy. A Phase I multiple baseline design across behaviors was used to investigate therapeutic effect of ultrasound visual feedback during speech rehabilitation. Perceptual characteristics of consonant production by apraxic speakers.

Single-word repetitions by 4 brain-damaged adults with apraxia of speech (AOS) but without concomitant aphasia were transcribed using a standard narrow phonetic transcription system. Analysis of consonant productions yielded a profile of AOS slightly different from the traditionally accepted one. Among the results was the atypical finding that consonant distortions exceeded all other error types including sound substitutions. In addition, errors predominated in the medial position of words, and monosyllabic words had approximately the same error rate per number of consonants as did multisyllab

Clinical application of two phonologically based treatment procedures.

Two phonological process-based treatment procedures were applied in an ongoing clinical program. Subjects were 4 children aged 3:1, 3:8, 4:1, and 5:1. Two subjects were assigned to a minimal pairs contrasting procedure, and 2 were assigned to a modified cycles procedure based on results of a detailed phonological analysis. All children demonstrated marked changes in their phonological systems as shown by the results of pretreatment and follow-up generalization probes. Correct production generalized to sounds affected by the treatment process that were not a focus of training. Correct productio

Acoustic patterns of an adolescent with multiple articulation errors.

This is a case study on an adolescent who demonstrated multiple articulation errors. In particular, an acoustic analysis was performed on the same features as those investigated by Kent and Forner (1980) in children with normal articulation and by Glasson (1984) in speech- and language-disordered children. The results of the analysis were compared to the data obtained by Kent and Forner and Glasson. Our subject demonstrated longer phrase durations and more variability than any of the groups with whom he was compared. In addition, he displayed an interaction between syntactic and articulatory p

Differences in biomechanical features of tongue pressure production between articulation and swallow.

Summary  The purpose of this study was to compare the tongue pressure against the hard palate during the articulation of a monosyllable with that during swallowing. The participants were 20 healthy adults without swallowing or articulation disorder (10 men and 10 women, mean age ± standard deviation: 22·5 ± 0·9 years). Tongue pressure during articulation of [ki] (articulatory pressure) and during dry swallowing (swallowing pressure) was recorded by a 0·1-mm-thick sensor sheet with five measuring points attached to the hard palate. Biomechanical parameters such as maximal magnitude, duration, i
