Cerebrospinal nematodiasis outbreak in an urban outdoor aviary of cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) in southern California.

An outbreak of cerebrospinal nematodiasis due to Baylisascaris sp. was documented in an urban outdoor aviary in southern California. Thirty-four out of 35 cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus, 97%) showed a variety of neurological signs including ataxia, lateral recumbency, opisthotonus, and torticollis. Thirteen carcasses were submitted for necropsy; the histological lesions were restricted to the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and were predominantly degenerative, characterized by multifocal white matter vacuolation, gliosis, axonal swelling, gitter cell infiltration, and mild he

Parasites as biological tags in population studies of demersal and pelagic fish species.

Among the different techniques applied in a holistic approach for fish stock identification, the use of parasites as "biological tags" is becoming increasingly important. In this presentation, our recent studies on the use of some parasite species, identified by genetic markers, and the parasite/fauna composition, in stock identification of demersal (Merluccius merluccius), small pelagic (Trachurus trachurus), and large pelagic fish species (Xiphias gladius) are reviewed. Different species of Anisakis and Hysterothylacium were genetically identified by the application of genetic (allozyme) mar

Host specificity of gastrointestinal parasites in free-ranging sloths from Costa Rica.

The diversity and host specificity of gastrointestinal parasites infecting free-ranging sloths is poorly known. We compared gastrointestinal parasites of two sloth species from Costa Rica-three-fingered sloths (Bradypus variegatus) and two-fingered sloths (Choloepus hoffmanni)-for the first time in both a primary forest and an urban habitat. We asked whether host-parasite interactions were predominantly structured by host identity, the habitats in which hosts occurred, or both. Coproparasitology revealed protozoa and nematode eggs from both host species, but cestode eggs were recorded only in

Rapid Therapeutic Response of Eosinophilic Meningoencephalitis in a Toddler With Baylisascaris procyonis Infection.

INTRODUCTION: Eosinophilic meningitis is an infrequently encountered condition. Baylisascaris procyonis (raccoon roundworm) infection, rarely diagnosed in North America, is a known cause of eosinophilic meningitis, often producing death or permanent neurologic damage. CASE REPORT: We recently encountered a toddler with geophagia and probable exposure to raccoon feces, who presented with eosinophilic meningitis and encephalitis, and was diagnosed with B procyonis infection and possible Toxocara co-infection. His marked peripheral eosinophilia and neurologic symptoms rapidly responded to cortic

[Hematological, serum biochemical and serological profile of Felis domesticus with experimental lagochilascariosis].

The present study evaluated the hemogram, different proteins, plasma enzymes, serum enzymes and specific antibody production of Felis domesticus experimentally infected by Lagochilascaris minor. The infected animals were seen to present increased total leukocytes (particularly eosinophils), decreased platelet counts, increased aspartate-aminotransferase and alanine-aminotransferase and, especially, the presence of specific IgG antibodies against antigens of the parasite. The reaction with crude extract of adult parasites was shown to be more specific, thereby enabling serum discrimination betw

Protein profile of extracellular vesicles derived from adult Parascaris spp.

BACKGROUND: Parascaris spp. represent a significant threat to equine health worldwide, particularly in foals. The long-term survival of parasites in the host necessitates persistent modulation of the host immune response. Intercellular communication achieved through the exchange of molecules via extracellular vesicles (EVs) released from the parasite could be a crucial factor in this regard. This study aimed to isolate and characterize EVs released by adult male and female Parascaris worms and conduct a proteomic analysis to identify sex-specific proteins and potential immunomodulatory factors

Neurologic Baylisascaris procyonis infection in a young dog.

A 14-week-old female Boston terrier-cross dog with intermittent gastroenteritis and an eosinophilia developed progressive neurologic disease with ataxia progressing to uncontrolled paddling. Autopsy revealed Baylisascaris procyonis larvae in 4 of 7 brain sections, with severe eosinophilic meningoencephalitis. Diagnosis was confirmed with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA sequencing tests of fresh and paraffin-embedded brain in conjunction with the compatible histologic appearance.

Occurrence of zoonotic nematodes Pseudoterranova decipiens, Contracaecum osculatum and Anisakis simplex in cod (Gadus morhua) from the Baltic Sea.

Baltic cod Gadus morhua (a total of total 224 specimens) captured east of the island of Bornholm in the southern Baltic Sea were subjected to a parasitological investigation between March 2013 and April 2014. Full artificial digestion of fillets from 188 cod and additional investigation of livers from 36 cod were performed. Cod or seal worm Pseudoterranova decipiens was recorded in musculature (prevalences up to 55% and intensities up to 56 worms per fish) associated with a negative correlation between worm intensity and condition factor. Liver worm Contracaecum osculatum (100% prevalence with

Cyanide dissociation from the hemoglobin of Parascaris equorum.

The reduction of cyanomethemoglobin by dithionite leads to the appearance of an intermediate, the complex of cyanide with ferrous hemoglobin, whose dissociation is easily followed in a stopped flow apparatus. This reaction was studied in the hemoglobin from the parasitic nematode Parascaris equorum, whose extremely high oxygen affinity is due to a very low dissociation rate. The rate of cyanide dissociation from ferrous Parascaris hemoglobin is not so dramatically different from that of other hemoglobins and myoglobins. Other features of the reaction are: (i) the rate constant of cyanide relea

Occurrence of fenbendazole resistance in Parascaris spp. on breeding farms in Sweden.

Anthelmintic resistance is an increasing problem in many gastrointestinal parasites of grazing animals. Among these, the equine roundworm, Parascaris spp., has developed wide-spread resistance to macrocyclic lactones over the past decades. Additionally, there are recent observations of emerging treatment failure of both tetrahydropyrimidine and fenbendazole. Therefore, the aims of this study were to further investigate the occurrence of fenbendazole resistance on breeding farms and to explore potential management-related risk factors associated with resistance in Parascaris spp. in Sweden. GEOGRAPHICAL VARIATION OF ENTEROPARASITISM IN THE SOUTHERN SEA LION OTARIA FLAVESCENS (SHAW, 1800) OFF THE COAST OF CHILE AS EVIDENCED WITH COPROLOGICAL TESTS: IMPLICATONS FOR ZOONOTIC RISKS.

The scarce information on the helminth fauna in otariids from the Southeastern Pacific comes mainly from stranded individuals or killed for that purpose. In this study, we compared the abundance and composition of enteroparasitic assemblages of Otaria flavescens using coprological techniques. Three sampling localities from north to south spanning 2,200 km off the Chilean coast were considered (Iquique, Viña del Mar, and Talcahuano). In all, 60 fecal samples were collected, and eggs belonging to 5 taxa were found in 91.6% of the samples. They were the anisakid nematodes Contracaecum and Pseudot

Validation of a commercial kit aimed to the detection of pathogenic anisakid nematodes in fish products.

Anisakids are parasitic nematodes responsible for a zoonosis that occurs following the ingestion of fish and fish products infected with larvae belonging to the genera Anisakis and Pseudoterranova. Rarely Contracaecum is found in association with gastric/intestinal illness, while Hysterothylacium is commonly considered not pathogenic. Although Real Time PCR assays have been recently used with the aim to detect and quantify these parasites in food products, methods applied did not undergo through extensive validation process, a feature highly desirable or mandatory in the case of testing labora

Complete mitochondrial genome of Baylisascaris sp. from a striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) in Kansas.

Baylisascaris species parasitizing skunks have received limited attention compared to the well-characterized raccoon roundworm (B. procyonis). We present the first complete mitochondrial genome of a Baylisascaris sp. collected in Kansas, United States, from a striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis). We morphologically identified the nematode as Baylisascaris sp., extracted DNA, sequenced it on the Illumina platform, and de novo assembled the complete mitochondrial genome. The complete mitochondrial genome was 14,752 bp, consisting of 12 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNAs, and 22 tRNAs. The genome had a s

Differential detection of Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum eggs in intestinal and caecal excreta of floor-housed laying hens: a longitudinal study.

Ascaridia galli and Heterakis gallinarum, the most prevalent nematodes of chickens, inhabit the small intestine and caeca, respectively, and often co-occur. Current excreta egg count (EEC) methods do not differentiate between their eggs, and although chickens produce two distinct excreta types - intestinal excreta (IE) and caecal excreta (CE) - the distribution of eggs of these species across them remains poorly understood. Forty Hy-Line Brown laying hens (40 weeks, mean body weight (BW) 2·07 ± 0·02 kg), cleared of prior nematode infection and artificially infected with A. galli (n = 20) or H.

Baylisascariasis: A young boy with neural larva migrans due to the emerging raccoon round worm.

A 17-month-old boy from Vancouver, Canada, presented with a 5-day history of progressive somnolence, ataxia, and torticollis. Additional investigations revealed eosinophilic encephalitis with deep white matter changes on MR imaging. On day 13, serology came back positive for Baylisascaris procyonis antibodies. While prophylaxis after ingestion of soil or materials potentially contaminated with raccoon feces can prevent baylisascariasis, timely treatment can sometimes alter a disastrous outcome. Populations of infected raccoons are propagating globally, but cases of Baylisascaris neural larva m

Morphometrical and genetic comparison of two nematode species: H. spumosa and H. dahomensis (Nematoda, Heterakidae).

Heterakis is a genus of parasitic nematodes, the majority of which are found in ground-feeding birds and only rarely in mammals. The best-known species is Heterakis spumosa, a parasite associated with the cosmopolitan invasive rodent Rattus rattus of Asiatic origin. Heterakis dahomensis was described in 1911 as a parasite of the Gambian giant rat (Cricetomys gambianus) from Benin (Africa), subsequently synonymized to H. spumosa by Hall (1916). The study of helminths in African rodents is scarce and patchy. Since the original description of H. dahomensis, there have been only a few reports from

Parasitism in Gambusia affinis: Fitness Effects in an Incipient Matrotroph.

Gambusia affinis (western mosquitofish) serves as a host for a variety of larval and adult parasites. Gambusia affinis is also an incipient matrotroph, exhibiting adjustments in post-fertilization provisioning to some offspring within a brood using recently acquired resources. Nutrient transfer to embryos is expected to limit the loss of embryo mass during development resulting in larger offspring. Since larger offspring are more likely to survive, maternal contributions are expected to increase fitness. The presence of parasites, particularly intestinal helminths, potentially reduces body con

Learning Cultural Humility Through Stories and Global Service-Learning.

Service-learning experiences are utilized by nursing programs to increase cultural learning for students. Through storytelling, the concept of cultural humility can be explained to students preparing for upcoming intercultural experiences. This case study describes the experience of nursing students and educators on their first service-learning trip to Kenya, and how intercultural issues were navigated as students developed cultural humility. The story now is shared in preparation for subsequent international student nursing trips. The utilization of storytelling can be a model for others prep
