Influenza viruses received and tested by the Melbourne WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza annual report, 2014.

The WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza in Melbourne is part of the World Health Organization's (WHO) Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System. In 2014 the Centre received a total of 5,374 influenza samples from laboratories primarily in the Asia-Pacific region. Viruses were characterised by their antigenic, genetic and antiviral drug resistance properties. Of the viruses successfully analysed 52% were A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses. The majority of these were antigenically and genetically similar to the WHO recommended reference strain for the 2014 Southern Hemisph

First report of Potorolepis spassky, 1994 (Eucestoda: Hymenolepididae) from China, with description of a new species in bats (Chiroptera: Rhinolophidae).

Potorolepis gulyaevi sp. n. (Cestoda: Hymenolepididae) is described from the Chinese horseshoe bat, Rhinolophus sinicus Andersen (Chiroptera: Rhinolophidae), from southern China. The new species differs from known species of the genus by the shape, number and size of rostellar hooks, the relative position and length of the cirrus-sac and the morphology of gravid uterus. This is the first report of a member of the genus from non-marsupial mammals and the first record of a Potorolepis Spassky, 1994 from eastern Asia. The generic diagnosis of Potorolepis is amended.

Global Risk Assessment of the Invasive Insect Thaumatotibia leucotreta to Citrus Based on its Potential Distribution.

The false-codling moth (FCM), Thaumatotibia leucotreta Meyrick (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), is a globally recognized quarantine pest responsible for substantial economic losses in the southern African citrus industry. Driven by international trade and climate change, FCM poses a potential threat to regions beyond its native range. In this study, we employed the MaxEnt model to predict suitable habitats for FCM under near-current and future climate scenarios based on 141 global occurrence data and 19 bioclimatic variables. The model performed excellently with an AUC of 0.965. The key bioclimatic

The veterinary use of diclofenac and vulture conservation in Spain: Updated evidence and socio-ecological implications.

Diclofenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used in livestock farming, with lethal effects on vultures when reaching high concentrations in the carcasses they feed on. There are evidences showing that it caused the decline of >95% of vultures of the Gyps genus in Southern Asia until its ban in 2006. In March 2013 two veterinary drugs containing diclofenac were authorized in Spain. The scientific and conservationist communities alerted on the foreseeable risks to European vulture populations based on previous experiences. Several risk assessments modelled the expected impact on

Cardiac Arrest and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Outcome Reports: Update of the Utstein Resuscitation Registry Template for In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest: A Consensus Report From a Task Force of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (American Heart Association, European Resuscitation Council, Australian and New Zealand Council on Resuscitation, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, InterAmerican Heart Foundation, Resuscitation Council of Southern Africa, Resuscitation Council of Asia).

Utstein-style reporting templates provide a structured framework with which to compare systems of care for cardiac arrest. The 2004 Utstein reporting template encompassed both out-of-hospital and in-hospital cardiac arrest. A 2015 update of the Utstein template focused on out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, which makes this update of the in-hospital template timely. Representatives of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation developed an updated in-hospital Utstein reporting template iteratively by meeting face-to-face, by teleconference, and by online surveys between 2013 and 2018. Molecular epidemiology of leishmaniasis in Asia (focus on cutaneous infections).

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Leishmaniasis has a wider geographical distribution than before. This review focuses on molecular epidemiological studies of new foci of cutaneous leishmaniasis in South and Southeast Asia. RECENT FINDINGS: In Pakistan, the main causative agent in southern dry areas was determined as Leishmania major followed by Leishmania tropica. There was no correlation between the skin lesion types and the causative species. In the western Indian Himalayas, L. tropica and Leishmania donovani have been reported as the causative pathogens. In Nepal, molecular methods revealed the first ca

[Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever].

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), caused by infection with CCHF virus (CCHFV), is viral hemorrhagic fever with high case fatality rate. CCHFV is classified to Family Bunyaviridae, Genus Nairovirus. CCHF is endemic to Africa, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, central Asia, and southern Asia. CCHFV is maintained in nature in several spe- cies of ticks (Hyalomma and Ixodes species) and mammals. Humans are infected with CCHFV by tick-bite or direct contact with viremic animals such as sheep. The CCHF-endemic re- gions are relatively economically disadvantaged areas, therefore CCHF is consider

BEAT-B Study (Behavior, Aspirations, and Treatment Needs): A Mixed-Methods Study of Patient Values, Preferences, and Barriers to Care Among People Living With Chronic Hepatitis B in South and Southeast Asia.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hepatitis B (HBV) infections have significant challenges in treatment uptake and adherence due to sociocultural barriers, healthcare system inefficiencies, and economic constraints. The evidence to decision framework highlights the importance of understanding patient values and preferences to align evidence-based policies with the "treat all" approach. METHODS: This mixed-methods study included a cross-sectional survey in five South Asian countries and qualitative data collection through focus group discussions and interviews. Qualitative data explored patient perceptions,

A Solo Dance or a Tango?

Previous studies have identified genetic factors and Epstein-Barr virus underlying nasopharyngeal carcinoma. A hypothesis postulated that the local buildup of HCl, mediated by hydrogen bond donors and acceptors and basic amino acids, causes cancer. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma incidences are high in the humid southern coastal China, Southeast Asia, and Mediterranean regions, but not in the noncoastal and nonhumid southern Yunnan Province, China, and nonhumid Central China. The nearly saturated humidity in the Huinan period in Guangdong can trigger the expression of proteins with extensive hydrogen

Phylogenetic analysis of nucleoprotein gene of dog rabies virus isolates from Southern India.

India like several other South East Asian and African countries continues to face the public health and economic problems associated with the disease. Our objective was to perform a limited sequence analysis of a portion of nucleoprotein gene of 22 rabies virus isolates obtained from domestic animals in Southern India during 2004-2005. These isolates were compared with rabies virus isolates originating from Asia, Europe, Africa and North America. The phylogenetic analysis showed that RV isolates in Southern India belong to genotype 1. They were similar to one another forming a single major gen

Diversity and spillover risk of swine acute diarrhea syndrome and related coronaviruses in China and Southeast Asia.

Bats are the reservoir hosts of emerging coronaviruses (CoVs) affecting human and livestock health. We assessed the diversity, evolution, and geographic distribution of two alphacoronaviruses (subgenus Rhinacovirus) with considerable potential for emergence: swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV), which has caused large outbreaks in pigs in China and can infect primary human airway epithelial cells in vitro; and the related Rhinolophus bat coronavirus HKU2 (HKU2-CoV). Phylogenetic analyses of 523 rhinacovirus sequences from bats in China and Southeast Asia suggest these viruses s

[Successful treatment of Old World cutaneous leishmaniasis with red or green light photodynamic therapy].

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is one of the most common travel dermatoses in Germany, which can be acquired not only in Africa, Asia or the American continent, but also in southern European countries. In addition to the currently available topical and systemic therapy options, there have been increasing reports of successful treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis with photodynamic therapy (PDT) using numerous therapy regimens and different photosensitizers in recent years. We report on successful photodynamic therapy of Old World cutaneous leishmaniasis with red and green light PDT with 10% 5‑aminolev

Two rare cases of rhinosporidiosis of parotid duct: Case reports and review of literature.

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous infective disease caused by fungi, Rhinosporidium seeberi. It can occur universally, is endemic in India, Sri Lanka and in South Asia, mainly reported from Southern India and Sri Lanka. Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic disease classically involving nose and nasopharynx and presents as a localized polypoid mass. Rhinosporidiosis involving parotid duct is rare. We encountered two cases of rhinosporidiosis at extremely unusual extranasal site-parotid duct, presenting as a cyst without nasal manifestations, which was misdiagnosed clinically and on cytologic

Alpha-thalassemia: Hb H disease and Hb Barts hydrops fetalis.

alpha-Thalassemia mutations are one of the most common mutations of man, and they cause Hb H disease and Hb Barts hydrops fetalis. Hb H disease is not necessarily a benign disorder as has been generally thought. Furthermore, in southern China and in Southeast Asia, there are 2-3 times more fetuses afflicted with the invariably fatal Hb Barts hydrops fetalis than with the beta-thalassemia major or intermedia. These findings underscore the public health importance of these hereditary disorders, and they call for better education, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and research for these diseases.

Identification of a novel phenylketonuria (PKU) mutation in the Chinese: further evidence for multiple origins of PKU in Asia.

A novel mutation has been identified in the human phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) gene of a Chinese patient with classical phenylketonuria (PKU). It is a single base transition of G to A at the last base in intron 4 of the gene, which abolishes the 3'-acceptor site of the intron. Population screening indicates that this mutation constitutes about 8% of all PKU chromosomes in Chinese but is absent in Japanese and Caucasian PKU patients. It is prevalent in southern China but rare in northern China, providing additional evidence that there were multiple founding populations of PKU in east Asia.

Culturally adapted post-diagnostic dementia support for South Asian people living with dementia and caregivers: a rapid review.

BACKGROUND: The number of minority ethnic people living with dementia (PLWD) in the UK is predicted to rise to 50 000 by 2026 and 172 000 by 2051. As the global population ages, there is a greater need to develop culturally appropriate post-diagnostic support for PLWD from minority ethnic backgrounds. METHODS: A rapid review was conducted of culturally adapted post-diagnostic dementia support for South Asian people with dementia and carers. Eight electronic databases were searched from inception until 16 September 2025. Databases included Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literatu

[Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, a future health problem in France?].

The Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is the etiological agent of a severe hemorrhagic fever affecting Africa, Asia and southern Europe. Climate changes of recent decades have recently led to a rise in the distribution of this virus. Still few scientific data are available on the biology of its vector, the tick, or its own biology, but the proven presence of human infections observed in Spain and animals with positive serology in Corsica should focus our attention on this pathogen. This review takes stock of the epidemiologic evolution of CCHF in Europe, notably in France.
