Effects of astigmatism on spectra, coherence and polarization of stochastic electromagnetic beams passing through an astigmatic optical system.

Analytical formulas for the cross-spectral density matrix of stochastic electromagnetic Gaussian Schell-model (EGSM) beams passing through an astigmatic optical system are derived. We show both analytically and by numerical examples the effects of astigmatism on spectra, coherence and polarization of stochastic electromagnetic EGSM beams propagating through an astigmatic lens. A comparison with the aberration-free case is made, and shows that the astigmatism has significant effect on the spectra, coherence and polarization.

Early Real-World Clinical Outcomes and Astigmatism Vector Analysis of Toric Intraocular Lenses for High Astigmatism (≥2.0 D).

Background/Objectives: Toric intraocular lens (IOL) implantation is the standard approach for correcting corneal astigmatism during cataract surgery and refractive lens exchange (RLE). Evidence on outcomes in eyes with high corneal astigmatism (≥2.00 diopters, D), particularly in heterogeneous real-world settings, remains limited. This study evaluated visual, refractive, and astigmatic vector outcomes of toric IOL implantation in a consecutive high-astigmatism cohort and investigated predictors of residual astigmatic error. Methods: This single-center, single-surgeon retrospective analysis of

Analysing the correlation between differential corneal thickness along principal meridians and corneal astigmatism: implications for whole-eye astigmatism.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyse the correlation between corneal astigmatism and disparity in corneal thickness. METHODS: In this retrospective analysis, data from 342 patients (684 eyes) were collected. The Sirius three-dimensional corneal topography system was utilised to ascertain the mean corneal thickness of the meridians. Correlation analyses were conducted between the mean difference in corneal thickness along the two principal meridians and the astigmatic values computed by simulated keratometry values (Sim-K) for total corneal astigmatism (TCA) and posterior corneal astigmatism

The Association Between Ocular Residual Astigmatism and the Efficacy of Astigmatism Correction Via Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE).

INTRODUCTION: Astigmatism correction after small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) surgery is affected by several factors, including ocular residual astigmatism (ORA), which accounts for the vector difference between refractive and corneal astigmatism. Previous studies revealed the relationship between ORA and astigmatism correction after laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). However, in SMILE surgery, no comprehensive study exploring the link between these two variables has been performed. We have therefore assessed the association between ORA and astigmatism correction after SMI

Comment on: "Astigmatism in Duane Retraction Syndrome".

A recent article provides valuable insights into different aspects of astigmatism in the Duane Retraction Syndrome (DRS) subtypes. The differing underlying pathophysiology in type II DRS and its higher prevalence in the mentioned study, along with possible age variations among different DRS subtypes, complicates the interpretation of the results. The mechanical forces generated by the co-contraction of the horizontal rectus muscles in patients with Duane Retraction Syndrome (DRS) may contribute to changes in the shape of the cornea, potentially leading to astigmatism. However, the exact mechan

Magnitude of astigmatism - A comparison between eyes.

PURPOSE: Astigmatism is a highly prevalent refractive error and while studies typically focus to describe the axis symmetry between eyes, little is known about the refractive symmetry. Therefore, this study determined the astigmatic power symmetry between eyes in a large clinic population. METHODS: A clinical chart review was conducted at three optometric practices in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada and subjective refraction data from 88,891 patients 14-70 years of age who presented with at least -0.25DC refractive astigmatism in at least one eye were included in the analysis

Consensus on the management of astigmatism in cataract surgery.

This project was aimed at achieving consensus on the management of astigmatism during cataract surgery by ophthalmologists from Latin America using modified Delphi technique. Relevant peer-reviewed literature was identified, and 21 clinical research questions associated with the definition, classification, measurement, and treatment of astigmatism during cataract surgery were formulated. Twenty participants were divided into seven groups, and each group was assigned three questions to which they had to respond in written form, after thoroughly reviewing the literature. The assigned questions w

Perceptual impact of astigmatism induction in presbyopes.

We investigated the effect of induced astigmatism on subjective best focus and on visual acuity in 28 subjects of different ages (pre-presbyopic and presbyopic) and with different refractive profiles (emmetropes and astigmats). Measurements were performed using a custom-developed Adaptive Optics system, which allowed correction of high order aberrations and induction of astigmatism (0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2.0 D; axis: 180°, 45° and 22.5°). Upon induction of astigmatism, best focus shifted towards negative values in pre-presbyopic emmetropic eyes (by -0.14 D for 0.5 D and by -0.33 D for 2.0 D), while

The Influence of Induced Astigmatism on the Depth of Focus.

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether an induced astigmatism influences the subjective depth of focus. METHODS: Fifty-one participants aged 18 to 35 years and with a mean spherical equivalent refractive error of -0.51 ± 2.35 DS participated in the study. The accommodation was blocked with three drops of 1% cyclopentolate. Refractive errors were corrected after subjective refraction with a 4-mm artificial pupil. To evaluate the depth of focus (DoF), defocus curves with a spherical range of ±1.5 DS were assessed. The DoF was calculated as the horizontal distance at a threshold level of +0.1 logMAR from
