Vestibular function, along with other sensory systems influencing spatial orientation, can have a profound influence on the ability of astronauts to function effectively. Beyond the well-known problems of space motion sickness, vestibular effects can influence astronaut well-being and performance during all phases of a space mission. This paper discusses some of the major vestibular reactions affecting human factors encountered in all space missions, and covers them chronologically in the following sequence: launch, early on-orbit, late on-orbit, EVA, artificial gravity, re-entry, and post-lan

Human space exploration poses inherent risks to astronauts' health, leading to molecular changes that can significantly impact their well-being. These alterations encompass genomic instability, mitochondrial dysfunction, increased inflammation, homeostatic dysregulation, and various epigenomic changes. Remarkably, these changes bear similarities to those observed during the aging process on Earth. However, our understanding of the connection between these molecular shifts and disease development in space remains limited. Frailty syndrome, a clinical syndrome associated with biological aging, h

In the early 1970s, nine astronauts participated in missions to the Skylab space station. During two preflight testing sessions at the Naval Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory in Pensacola, the amplitudes of their ocular counter-rolling (OCR) during body tilts were assessed to determine if their vestibular functions were within normal ranges. We recently re-evaluated this data to determine asymmetry of each astronaut's OCR response and their OCR slope from sigmoid fits during static leftward and rightward body tilts, which we then compared with their Coriolis sickness susceptibility index (

Previous studies have shown decreased microbial diversity in astronaut gut microbiomes during spaceflight, raising potential health concerns. Enterobacter cloacae, a commensal member of the human gastrointestinal tract microbiota, has the potential to cause opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients. However, little is known about how E. cloacae cells adapt to extreme environments such as microgravity, and whether this bacterium is of medical concern for astronauts during long-term spaceflight missions, as astronaut immune systems are compromised by microgravity. To this end, E. cl

The three Spacelab D-1 Scientist Astronauts were exposed to a 1 1/2 h 3 g centrifuge run in the supine position, resulting in a linear 3 g acceleration in the x-direction. They used their space experience to evaluate their readapting to normal gravity and compared their observations with 'Space Adaptation Syndrome'. After the centrifuge runs, the vestibular visual system appeared to be modified in a very specific and reproducible manner. Readapting to the normal 1 g environment took at least 6 h. During this period there was a striking similarity to the astronaut's experience during adaptation

Sex and gender differences have long been a research topic of interest, yet few studies have explored the specific differences in neurological responses between men and women during and after spaceflight. Knowledge in this field is limited due to the significant disproportion of sexes enrolled in the astronaut corps. Research indicates that general neurological and sensory differences exist between the sexes, such as those in laterality of amygdala activity, sensitivity and discrimination in vision processing, and neuronal cell death (apoptosis) pathways. In spaceflight, sex differences may in

The toxicity of Lunar dust (LD) is well-known to harm astronauts' health. However, the characteristics of micro-LD deposition in the human nasal airway remains unknown, and studying it through experiments is challenging. Therefore, this study employs numerical investigations to address this issue. Our findings reveal that LD larger than 4 µm primarily (>50%) deposit in the nasal cavity at an inspiration flow rate of Q= 40 L/min, while LD smaller than 8 µm are more likely (>50%) to enter the lung lobe at Q= 15 L/min. The right upper lung lobe receives a higher deposit fraction of LD compared to

Astronauts returning from long-duration spaceflights experience visual-vestibular conflicts that causes motion sickness, perceptions that the environment is moving when it is not, and problems with walking and other functional tasks. To evaluate whether astronauts will have similar decrements after they land on Mars following exposure to weightlessness, participants were held by a device that offloads their weight, first entirely (0 G), and then partially (0.38 G) or not at all (1 G). Tandem (heel-to-toe) walk on a medium-density foam surface was used to assess the subject's walking performanc

Space exploration exposes astronauts to a variety of gravitational stresses. Exposure to a reduced gravity environment affects human anatomy and physiology. Countermeasures to restore homeostatic states within the human body have begun. The pathophysiological effects of exposure to microgravity, on the neurological system, are, however, still not clear. NASA has scheduled deep space exploration of extraterrestrial locations such as the Moon and Mars in the 2030s. Adverse health effects related to the human exposure to microgravity from previous, relatively shorter missions have been documented

Astronauts may experience Space Adaptation Syndrome at the primary period in spaceflight. It is widely accepted that it is mainly caused by vestibular adaptive changes. The reverse changes of adaptation present after the return from weightlessness to normal 1 G. It may cause astronauts' postural instability and orthostatic intolerance. Evidences from animal model and some data from humans suggest that the vestibular system have influences on the sympathetic nervous system and cardiovascular control. The inputs that appear to be critical in producing these responses come from otolith receptors.

Orienting oneself in space is not an easy task. On Earth, we combine visual, vestibular and pressure cues into a coherent concept of up and down. Since there are no cues from gravity in space, astronauts have to adjust the way they determine up from down, with the possible risk of space motion sickness. In three tasks performed by one astronaut in the International Space Station (ISS), we examined the effect of artificial touch cues presented to the torso. The role of "natural" touch cues on spatial orientation in microgravity, such as pressure presented to the sole of the feet, has already be

Observations with three astronauts yielded two major findings. First, perceived self-motion during sinusoidal roll differed immediately postflight from preflight. Between 70 and 150 min after landing, roll was perceived primarily as linear translation. Secondly, more horizontal eye movement was elicited by roll stimulation immediately postflight relative to both preflight and later postflight observations. These results support an "otolith tilt-translation reinterpretation" hypothesis, which has clear implications for understanding astronaut reports of space motion sickness during the early pe

In the space environment, the traditional radioprotective principles of time, distance, and shielding become difficult to implement. Additionally, the complex radiation environment inherent in space, the chronic exposure timeframe, and the presence of numerous confounding variables complicate the process of creating appropriate risk models for astronaut exposure. Pharmaceutical options hold tremendous promise to attenuate acute and late effects of radiation exposure in the astronaut population. Pharmaceuticals currently approved for other indications may also offer radiation protection, modula

"Moderne dance" (as opposed to a more academic or classical dance form) uses techniques from kinesiology, anatomy and improvization which are adapted to a cultural, technological and political environment. The function of a choreographic system is to take and give a measure of the world. This includes, with the present tendency of the evolution of culture, a new "naturalism" which seeks the secrets of the body. Dance movements express in terms of space the dimension fo the infinite. It gives somehow the measure of a world within which everything is relative. Except for the speed of light, time

A program has been initiated to develop apparatus and procedures to preadapt astronauts to the sensory rearrangement associated with weightlessness in spaceflight. If space motion sickness is a consequence of adaptation to that sensory rearrangement, preflight training could afford astronauts significant relief from the motion sickness. The preflight adaptation trainer (PAT) was designed to produce rearranged relationships between visual and otolith signals analogous to those experienced in space. Investigations have been undertaken with three prototype trainers. The results indicated that exp

BACKGROUND: A German astronaut visited the MIR space station between 10 February and 2 March 1997. Together with his Russian colleagues, he conducted a series of scientific investigations before, during and after his stay aboard the MIR station. Research performed during this flight was part of a global space life sciences programme and focused on metabolic homeostasis, fluid balance, calcium homeostasis and cardiovascular regulatory mechanisms. The main goal of the scientific experiments was to use this mission as a milestone to establish international networks of scientific collaboration usi

KEY POINTS: We studied healthy astronauts before, during and after the Neurolab Space Shuttle mission with controlled breathing and apnoea, to identify autonomic changes that might contribute to postflight orthostatic intolerance. Measurements included the electrocardiogram, finger photoplethysmographic arterial pressure, respiratory carbon dioxide levels, tidal volume and peroneal nerve muscle sympathetic activity. Arterial pressure fell and then rose in space, and drifted back to preflight levels after return to Earth. Vagal metrics changed in opposite directions: vagal baroreflex gain and t

Exposure to the space environment induces a number of pathophysiological outcomes in astronauts, including bone demineralization, sleep disorders, circadian clock dysregulation, cardiovascular and metabolic dysfunction, and reduced immune system function. A recent report describing experiments aboard the Space Shuttle mission, STS-132, showed that the level of melatonin, a hormone that provides the biochemical signal of darkness, was decreased during microgravity in an in vitro culture model. Additionally, abnormal lighting conditions in outer space, such as low light intensity in orbital spac
