INTRODUCTION: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly used to support athlete performance evaluation, yet responses to AI-based analysis may depend on whether the evaluative task is perceived as requiring objective calculation or contextual human judgment. Drawing on task-dependent algorithm aversion, this study examined whether an identical athlete performance report would be evaluated differently when attributed to an AI-based analysis system or professional human analysts.
METHODS: A total of 220 participants were randomly assigned to review the same football performance report presen

Competitive athletes report symptoms of depression and anxiety at rates similar to or higher than the general population. There is some initial evidence that difficulties in emotion regulation are positively associated with depression, anxiety, and stress among university student-athletes; however, research on emotion dysregulation in sport contexts is limited. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to examine the associations between emotion dysregulation, sport performance concerns, and symptoms of depression and anxiety among competitive athletes. We hypothesized that: H1) emotion

BACKGROUND: Research into genetic markers associated with sports performance and aerobic capacity has been gaining momentum. However, despite the discovery of numerous molecular and genetic markers, there is still a gap in understanding the variations in athletes' trainability and maximum oxygen consumption levels (VO₂ max). The purpose of this study was to examine molecular and genetic markers associated with athletic performance and build linear models to evaluate the contributions of phenotype and genotype to VO₂ max levels in professional athletes.
METHODS: A group of 1,115 athletes from

This study explored the relationship between floating toes and athletic performance among collegiate track and field athletes. A total of 422 athletes (sprinters, jumpers, and distance runners) and 136 controls participated in this study. Plantar surface images were captured using a specially designed foot scanner during standing to calculate the floating toe score. The score, which sums the floating toe points of all toes, categorizes them into 'floating toe', 'incomplete contact', or 'normal toe'. The World Athletics score served as a measure of athletic performance. Overall, collegiate trac

BACKGROUND: It has been hypothesized that both atrial fibrillation (AF) and medications for AF are poorly tolerated in athletes.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of AF and AF treatments on sports performance.
METHODS: An Internet-based survey, initiated via StopAfib.org, queried the impact of AF and treatment modalities on sports performance, training, and symptoms. Performance (rated in comparison to personal best), frequency of training, and competition were compared before onset of AF symptoms vs when symptoms at worst, via paired Wilcoxon, and then similar

Compulsive exercise is linked with poorer treatment outcomes in people with eating disorder (EDs). High-performance athletes represent a growing and complex subcomponent of the broader ED population, and emergent evidence indicates that different conceptualisations of compulsive exercise are needed in this population. Existing randomised controlled trials in ED populations have demonstrated small treatment effects on compulsive exercise compared with control groups; however, athletes were sparsely sampled across these studies. Thus, the extent to which current treatments for compulsive exercis

In recent years, many efforts have been made to identify micronutrients or nutritional strategies capable of preventing, or at least, attenuating, exercise-induced muscle damage and oxidative stress, and improving athlete performance. The reason is that most exercises induce various changes in mitochondria and cellular cytosol that lead to the generation of reactive species and free radicals whose accumulation can be harmful to human health. Among them, supplementation with phenolic compounds seems to be a promising approach since their chemical structure, composed of catechol, pyrogallol, and

Caffeine is often used in a variety of forms to enhance athletic performance; however, research regarding caffeine's effects on strength and power in female athletes is lacking. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze the acute effects of caffeine anhydrous (6 mg/kg of body mass) on jumping performance and maximal strength in female collegiate athletes. Eleven athletes (19.7 ± 0.9 yrs; 166.4 ± 10.2 cm, 67.7 ± 9.4 kg) performed two testing sessions separated by one week, and randomly received caffeine or placebo using a double-blind approach. BACKGROUND: Disease progression and ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) in arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) are correlated with physical exercise, and clinical detraining and avoidance of competitive sport practice are suggested for ARVC patients. An algorithm assessing primary arrhythmic risk in ARVC patients was recently developed by Cadrin-Tourigny et al. Data regarding its transferability to athletes are lacking.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the reliability of the Cadrin-Tourigny risk prediction algorithm in a cohort of athletes with ARVC and to descr

Devastating paralysis, autonomic dysfunction, and abnormal cardiovascular control present significant hemodynamic challenges to individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI), especially during exercise. In general, resting arterial pressure after SCI is lower than with able-bodied individuals and is commonly associated with persistent orthostatic intolerance along with transient episodes of life-threatening hypertension, known as "autonomic dysreflexia." During exercise, the loss of central and reflexive cardiovascular control attenuates maximal heart rate and impairs blood pressure regulation and

BACKGROUND: Precooling has been shown to enhance performance in repeated sprint exercise in able-bodied subjects in a hot environment. Spinal cord injury causes thermoregulatory impairment with a detrimental effect on performance. This study assessed whether cooling strategies before and during exercise in the heat enhances sprint performance in athletes with tetraplegia.
METHODS: Eight male athletes with tetraplegia performed intermittent arm crank exercise in the heat (32.0 degrees C (0.1 degrees C); humidity, 50% (0.1%)) for a maximum of 60 min or until exhaustion. Trials involved a no-coo

BACKGROUND: Age-related disability and lost independence currently plague one third of older Americans. Many causes of disability, lost muscle mass and bone mineral density, are modifiable with exercise. Most exemplary of successful aging are the Senior Olympians; this group of vital athletes exhibit persistently high levels of functional capacity.
PURPOSE: This study describes demographic data, injury characteristics and the effect of aging on physical performance in senior athletes to identify key time points for intervention to address declining performance.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a comprehensive neuromuscular training program on measures of performance and lower-extremity movement biomechanics in female athletes. The hypothesis was that significant improvements in measures of performance would be demonstrated concomitant with improved biomechanical measures related to anterior cruciate ligament injury risk. Forty-one female basketball, soccer, and volleyball players (age, 15.3 +/- 0.9 years; weight, 64.8 +/- 9.96 kg; height, 171.2 +/- 7.21 cm) underwent 6 weeks of training that included 4 main components (plyometr
