An atlas of prenatal development of the human orofacial region.

There are several atlases available showing prenatal human development. However, none is focused on prenatal orofacial development during maxillary and mandibular bone formation. These events, together with dental development and formation of the temporomandibular joint, take place during several fetal stages. While photographic atlases are limited to depicting the outer shape, and atlases based on histological sections only show a series of single sections, an atlas based on three-dimensional reconstructions from serial sections can show both the outer skin and the structures underneath, whic

Brief communication: The London atlas of human tooth development and eruption.

The aim of this study was to develop a comprehensive evidence-based atlas to estimate age using both tooth development and alveolar eruption for human individuals between 28 weeks in utero and 23 years. This was a cross-sectional, retrospective study of archived material with the sample aged 2 years and older having a uniform age and sex distribution. Developing teeth from 72 prenatal and 104 postnatal skeletal remains of known age-at-death were examined from collections held at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Natural History Museum, London, UK (M 91, F 72, unknown sex 13). The Impact of Atlas Parcellation on Functional Connectivity Analysis Across Six Psychiatric Disorders.

Neuropsychiatric disorders are associated with altered functional connectivity (FC); however, the reported regional patterns of functional alterations suffered from low replicability and high variability. This is partly because of differences in the atlas and delineation techniques used to measure FC-related deficits within/across disorders. We systematically investigated the impact of the brain parcellation approach on the FC-based brain network analysis. We focused on identifying the replicable FCs using three structural brain atlases, including Automated Anatomical Labeling (AAL), Brainneto

Automated MRI Segmentation of Brainstem Nuclei Critical to Consciousness.

Although substantial progress has been made in mapping the connectivity of cortical networks responsible for conscious awareness, neuroimaging analysis of subcortical networks that modulate arousal (i.e., wakefulness) has been limited by a lack of robust segmentation procedures for ascending arousal network (AAN) nuclei in the brainstem. Automated segmentation of brainstem AAN nuclei is an essential step toward elucidating the physiology of human consciousness and the pathophysiology of disorders of consciousness. We created a probabilistic atlas of 10 AAN nuclei built on diffusion MRI scans o

Population Atlas Analysis of Emerging Brain Structural Connections in the Human Fetus.

BACKGROUND: A lack of in utero imaging data hampers our understanding of the connections in the human fetal brain. Generalizing observations from postmortem subjects and premature newborns is inaccurate due to technical and biological differences. PURPOSE: To evaluate changes in fetal brain structural connectivity between 23 and 35 weeks postconceptional age using a spatiotemporal atlas of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. POPULATION: Publicly available diffusion atlases, based on 60 healthy women (age 18-45 years) with normal prenatal care, from 23 and 35 weeks of

A Segmentation Method of Foramen Ovale Based on Multiatlas.

Trigeminal neuralgia is a neurological disease. It is often treated by puncturing the trigeminal nerve through the skin and the oval foramen of the skull to selectively destroy the pain nerve. The process of puncture operation is difficult because the morphology of the foramen ovale in the skull base is varied and the surrounding anatomical structure is complex. Computer-aided puncture guidance technology is extremely valuable for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. Computer-aided guidance can help doctors determine the puncture target by accurately locating the foramen ovale in the skull b

A single-cell RNA-seq atlas of Schistosoma mansoni identifies a key regulator of blood feeding.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease that infects 240 million people. With no vaccines and only one drug available, new therapeutic targets are needed. The causative agents, schistosomes, are intravascular flatworm parasites that feed on blood and lay eggs, resulting in pathology. The function of the parasite's various tissues in successful parasitism are poorly understood, hindering identification of therapeutic targets. Using single-cell RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), we characterize 43,642 cells from the adult schistosome and identify 68 distinct cell populations, including specialize

Feasibility of a fetal anatomy 3D atlas by computer-assisted anatomic dissection.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility of 3D modelisation of fetal anatomy by using the Computer-assisted anatomic dissection (CAAD) based on immunolabeled histologic slices and MRI slices with a specific 3D software. STUDY DESIGN: For pelvis and lower limbs, subjects came from legal abortion, medical pregnancy termination, or late miscarriage. Specimens were fixed in 10 % formalin, then embedded in paraffin wax and serially sectioned. The histological slices were stained using HES and Masson Trichrome. Protein S-100 and D2-40 markers were used for immuno-labelling. Serial transverse sections w

Mediastinal lymph node detection and station mapping on chest CT using spatial priors and random forest.

PURPOSE: To develop an automated system for mediastinal lymph node detection and station mapping for chest CT. METHODS: The contextual organs, trachea, lungs, and spine are first automatically identified to locate the region of interest (ROI) (mediastinum). The authors employ shape features derived from Hessian analysis, local object scale, and circular transformation that are computed per voxel in the ROI. Eight more anatomical structures are simultaneously segmented by multiatlas label fusion. Spatial priors are defined as the relative multidimensional distance vectors corresponding to each

Validation of a radiographic scoring system for haemochromatosis arthropathy.

BACKGROUND: Arthropathy is one of the earliest and most common manifestations of hereditary haemochromatosis with a significant impact on quality of life. Although its radiographic features are well known, there is no assessment tool for their evaluation. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a novel scoring system for the evaluation of radiographic features of haemochromatosis arthropathy. METHODS: A dichotomous scoring system assessing four radiographic features of haemochromatosis arthropathy and a 4-grade scale reflecting severity of radiographic change have been developed. Atlas of lysosomal aging reveals a metabolite signature shared with lysosomal storage disorders.

Lysosomal dysfunction is a well-recognized feature of aging. Here, we used a suite of tools for rapid lysosomal isolation to construct a multitissue atlas of the metabolite changes lysosomes undergo during aging. Aged lysosomes in brain, heart, muscle, and white adipose tissue accumulated glycerophosphodiesters and cystine, metabolites that are causally linked to juvenile lysosomal storage disorders, Batten disease, and cystinosis. Levels of these metabolites increased linearly with age, preceding organismal decline. Caloric restriction, a lifespan-extending intervention, mitigated these chang

Quantifying interindividual variability and asymmetry of face-selective regions: a probabilistic functional atlas.

Face-selective regions (FSRs) are among the most widely studied functional regions in the human brain. However, individual variability of the FSRs has not been well quantified. Here we use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to localize the FSRs and quantify their spatial and functional variabilities in 202 healthy adults. The occipital face area (OFA), posterior and anterior fusiform face areas (pFFA and aFFA), posterior continuation of the superior temporal sulcus (pcSTS), and posterior and anterior STS (pSTS and aSTS) were delineated for each individual with a semi-automated proced

Variation in longitudinal trajectories of regional brain volumes of healthy men and women (ages 10 to 85 years) measured with atlas-based parcellation of MRI.

Numerous cross-sectional MRI studies have characterized age-related differences in regional brain volumes that differ with structure and tissue type. The extent to which cross-sectional assumptions about change are accurate depictions of actual longitudinal measurement remains controversial. Even longitudinal studies can be limited by the age range of participants, sex distribution of the samples, and scan intervals. To address these issues, we calculated trajectories of regional brain volume changes from T1-weighted (SPGR) MRI data, quantified with our automated, unsupervised SRI24 atlas-base

Generation of an Age-Dependent and Harmonized 18F-FDG Brain PET Atlas Using a High-Sensitivity Short-Axial FOV PET/CT System.

18F-FDG brain PET atlas is widely used in clinical and neuroscience research. However, variation in PET scanner technology can lead to misinterpretation and quantification errors with mismatched atlases. This study aimed to develop high-resolution, age-stratified FDG brain atlases harmonized across different effective image resolutions (EIRs) to support diverse PET/CT scanners. A total of 140 adults (aged 20-90 years, 72 males) were retrospectively enrolled and divided into seven age groups (n = 20). All underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT at China-Japan Friendship Hospital (Jan 2022-May 2023) using the

Distribution of a photographic atlas did not reduce postoperative care utilization after pediatric circumcision or the indispensability of the pediatric urology clinic nurse.

BACKGROUND: Surgery in children is increasingly ambulatory, and caregiver responsibilities for postoperative care can produce anxiety. Prior studies have suggested the distribution of a photographic atlas can mitigate caregiver anxiety and reduce clinic phone calls and in-person presentations after pediatric penile surgery. OBJECTIVE: A pilot study of the ability of a photographic atlas, distributed to caregivers, was aimed to be conducted to reduce postoperative resource utilization. STUDY DESIGN: Patients undergoing circumcision or revision circumcision were randomized to standard postoper

Clinical evaluation of multi-atlas based segmentation of lymph node regions in head and neck and prostate cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Semi-automated segmentation using deformable registration of selected atlas cases consisting of expert segmented patient images has been proposed to facilitate the delineation of lymph node regions for three-dimensional conformal and intensity-modulated radiotherapy planning of head and neck and prostate tumours. Our aim is to investigate if fusion of multiple atlases will lead to clinical workload reductions and more accurate segmentation proposals compared to the use of a single atlas segmentation, due to a more complete representation of the anatomical variations. METHODS: Atla

Creating a virtual surgical atlas of craniofacial procedures: Part I. Three-dimensional digital models of craniofacial deformities.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional digital animation can enable surgeons to create anatomically accurate, virtual models of normal and pathologic human anatomy. From these models, surgical procedures can be digitally performed, recorded, and distributed as a teaching tool or as a virtual surgical atlas. The idea of a virtual surgical atlas has recently become a part of contemporary surgical teaching. In the field of craniofacial surgery, no such educational tool exists. Presented is the first part of the creation of a virtual atlas of craniofacial surgical procedures: the three-dimensional digital

Source analysis of spontaneous magnetoencephalograpic activity in healthy aging and mild cognitive impairment: influence of apolipoprotein E polymorphism.

The apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 allele is a genetic risk factor for the development of late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD), which affects cholinergic system functioning. The association between reduced cholinergic levels and increase of magnetoencephalographic (MEG) low-frequency has been used to explain spectral changes found in AD patients. However, the investigation in predementia stages is scarce. We obtained MEG recordings from 25 aged controls and 36 mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients during a resting-state condition. According to their APOE genotype, MCIs and controls were subdivid
