Infarction of the kidney is an uncommon condition that can result from obstruction or decrease of renal arterial flow. The diagnosis is often delayed because it can mimic many other pathologic states, including pyelonephritis, renal colic, acute abdomen, pancreatitis and more. A high index of suspicion is important for prompt diagnosis. We describe a 20-year-old man presented with abdominal and right flank pain and hematuria. A computed tomography scan with intravenous contrast showed partial infarction of right renal parenchyma and selective renal angiography showed complete occlusion of the

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the morphologic features and the clinical significance of massive fatty deposits in the atrial septum of the heart.
BACKGROUND: Large deposits of adipose tissue in the atrial septum were first described in 1964 and have been referred to as "lipomatous hypertrophy" of the atrial septum. A relation between these fatty deposits and atrial arrhythmias has been suggested.
METHODS: The thickness of the atrial septum cephalad to the fossa ovalis ranged from 1.5 to 6 cm in 91 patients and was > or = 2 cm in 80 patients. This report focuses primarily on the latter 80 p

BACKGROUND: Premature atrial contractions (PACs) are predictors of atrial fibrillation, stroke, and cardiovascular mortality. The present study aimed to assess relevant factors for PACs among a general population of Japanese men.
METHODS AND RESULTS: This study conducted a population-based, cross-sectional study among 517 men, aged 40-79 years, with neither apparent myocardial infarction nor atrial fibrillation. 24-h Holter electrocardiography to assess PAC frequency was used. Age, body mass index, height, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholestero

During the neonatal period the majority of cardiac tumors seen are rhabdomyomas, and the clinical manifestations are notably variable. Symptoms of rhabdomyoma depend on the presence of intracardiac obstructions, myocardial involvement, or rhythm disturbances. Most cardiac rhabdomyomas regress in follow-up, but some need medical/surgical intervention during the neonatal period as a result of resistant atrial or ventricular arrhythmia. The present case study is a description of an 8-day-old neonate with atrial bigeminy that caused nonconducted premature pulse-related bradycardia, and cardiac rha

A Junctional ectopic tachycardia diagnosis was performed using two electrophysiological maneuvers in an adult female with a narrow-complex supraventricular tachycardia with a bystander AV-node slow pathway conduction, who previously underwent catheter ablation attempts for an atrio-ventricular nodal re-entrant tachycardia misdiagnosis. The first maneuver was atrial entrainment with an atrial-His-His-atrial response. The second was based on the response to a premature atrial complex delivered at different phases of the tachycardia cycle confirming that anterograde slow pathway conduction and re

Iatrogenic atrioventricular (AV) block can occur in the context of cardiac surgery, percutaneous transcatheter, or electrophysiologic procedures. In cardiac surgery, patients undergoing aortic and/or mitral valve surgery are at the highest risk for developing perioperative AV block requiring permanent pacemaker implantation. Similarly, patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement are also at increased risk for developing AV block. Electrophysiologic procedures, including catheter ablation of AV nodal re-entrant tachycardia, septal accessory pathways, para-Hisian atrial tachycardi

First-degree heart block is a common electrocardiographic manifestation of acute rheumatic fever and is included in Jones' diagnostic criteria. Other electrocardiographic changes such as sinus tachycardia, bundle branch blocks. nonspecific ST-T wave changes, atrial and ventricular premature complexes have been reported with variable frequency. However, complete heart block is an exceptionally rare manifestation of acute rheumatic fever. We report the clinical course of a 16-year-old boy with acute rheumatic fever who had prolonged P-R interval in the electrocardiogram on admission which subseq

Williams syndrome (WS) is a congenital, multisystem disorder in which 80% of patients have cardiovascular abnormalities. Sudden cardiac death occurs 25 to 100 times more often in WS than in the general population, and cardiac repolarization is abnormal in WS. We sought to determine the prevalence of primary arrhythmias in patients with WS and whether QTc prolongation impacts arrhythmia risk. We retrospectively reviewed all patients with WS with ambulatory electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring at our institution between October 2017 and January 2022. The primary outcome was the presence of arrhyth

Anxiety is common in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). The mutual causal effect between anxiety and AF is expected with limited evidence. Atrial cardiopathy is a term to describe structural or electrophysiological atrium abnormality that precedes the onset of AF. This study aimed to investigate the association of anxiety with atrial cardiopathy, giving a clue to the causal relationship of this mind-heart link. This cross-sectional study analyzed 532 patients who were free of AF, atrial flutter, stroke, acute coronary syndrome and valvular heart disease. Atrial cardiopathy was defined as

The electrocardiogram (ECG) may be entirely normal in the patient with pulmonary embolism (P/E); alternatively, any number of rhythm and/or morphologic abnormalities may be observed in such a patient. The abnormal ECG may deviate from the norm with alterations in rhythm, in conduction, in axis of the QRS complex, and in the morphology of the P wave, QRS complex, and ST segment/T wave. The electrocardiographic findings associated with PE are numerous, including arrhythmias (sinus tachycardia, atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation, atrial tachycardia, and atrial premature contractions), nonspecifi

Recently, computerized arrhythmia classification tools have been intensively used to aid physicians to recognize different irregular heartbeats. In this paper, we introduce arrhythmia CAD system exploiting cyclostationary signal analysis through estimation of the spectral correlation function for 5 different beat types. Two experiments were performed. Raw spectral correlation data were used as features in the first experiment while the other experiment which dealt with the spectral correlation coefficients as image included extraction of wavelet and shape features followed by fisher score for

AIMS: To confirm the presence of tachycardia-induced slur or notch in the terminal portion of the QRS complexes in a general patient population.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A tachycardia-induced J wave was defined as a slur or notch in the terminal portion of the QRS complexes newly induced at short RR intervals during atrial premature contractions (APCs) or atrial electrical stimulation in the electrophysiological study (EPS). Twenty-three out of 2000 patients with general diseases were involved. All patients with aborted sudden cardiac death, ventricular fibrillation or a family history of sudden

The cases reported in this study have the following characteristics: ① no J waves were observed in sinus beats, while transient J waves (Cases 1 and 3) or J point/ST-segment elevation (Case 2) appeared in atrial premature beats (APB), indicating that the occurrence of significant J waves/ST-segment elevation was dependent on short cycles (Cases 1 and 2) or long-short-cycle sequences (Case 3); ② the degree of J waves/ST-segment elevation was significant in all cases. Analysis suggests that short-cycle-dependent or long-short-cycle sequence-dependent J waves/ST-segment elevation is an ECG manife

OBJECTIVE: We have developed a peak detection algorithm for accurate determination of heart rate, using photoplethysmographic (PPG) signals from a smartwatch, even in the presence of various cardiac rhythms, including normal sinus rhythm (NSR), premature atrial contraction (PAC), premature ventricle contraction (PVC), and atrial fibrillation (AF). Given the clinical need for accurate heart rate estimation in patients with AF, we developed a novel approach that reduces heart rate estimation errors when compared to peak detection algorithms designed for NSR.
METHODS: Our peak detection method i
