Auditory dysfunction.

Hearing impairment, although uncommon, may occur in patients with a vertebrobasilar artery occlusion disease. The pathogenesis may be an ischemic lesion involving the auditory pathways in the pons and midbrain, the cochlear nucleus, cochlear nerve or the cochlea. The AICA and IAA are the main arteries that supply the peripheral audiovestibular structures of the inner ear and central audiovestibular pathways of the middle cerebellar peduncle and lateral pons.

A Cortico-Collicular Amplification Mechanism for Gap Detection.

Auditory cortex (AC) is necessary for the detection of brief gaps in ongoing sounds, but not for the detection of longer gaps or other stimuli such as tones or noise. It remains unclear why this is so, and what is special about brief gaps in particular. Here, we used both optogenetic suppression and conventional lesions to show that the cortical dependence of brief gap detection hinges specifically on gap termination. We then identified a cortico-collicular gap detection circuit that amplifies cortical gap termination responses before projecting to inferior colliculus (IC) to impact behavior.

Microglia induce auditory dysfunction after status epilepticus in mice.

Auditory dysfunction and increased neuronal activity in the auditory pathways have been reported in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy, but the cellular mechanisms involved are unknown. Here, we report that microglia play a role in the disinhibition of auditory pathways after status epilepticus in mice. We found that neuronal activity in the auditory pathways, including the primary auditory cortex and the medial geniculate body (MGB), was increased and auditory discrimination was impaired after status epilepticus. We further demonstrated that microglia reduced inhibitory synapses on MGB rela

Visual and auditory anomalies in Chediak-Higashi syndrome.

Albinism is correlated with misrouting of decussating retinal fibers in the brain. There is also evidence of anomalies of decussating auditory pathways in albinos. The Chediak-Higashi syndrome (CHS) is a rare form of partial albinism which includes increased susceptibility to infections, a hemorrhagic tendency and peripheral polyneuropathies. Binocular and monocular pattern-onset visually evoked potentials (VEPs) and monaural auditory brain stem responses (ABRs) were recorded from 4 subjects with CHS. Three of the CHS demonstrated asymmetric monocular VEPs and failed the Titmus stereovision te

The pontine projection from the inferior colliculus in the cat. An experimental anatomical study.

The present study was carried out in order to clarify the organization of the pontine projection from the inferior colliculus in the cat with the methods of Nauta27 and Fink and Heimer16 following lesions of different sizes and locations in the inferior colliculus. The inferior colliculus projects exclusively to the anterior two-thirds of the ipsilateral dorsolateral pontine nucleus. The majority of fibers originates from cells in the central nucleus and a small amount from cells in the external and the pericentral nuclei as well. Areas of the present projection largely overlap with areas of p

Global order and local disorder in brain maps.

Maps serve as a ubiquitous organizing principle in the mammalian brain. In several sensory systems, such as audition, vision, and somatosensation, topographic maps are evident throughout multiple levels of brain pathways. Topographic maps, like retinotopy and tonotopy, persist from the receptor surface up to the cortex. Other maps, such as those of orientation preference in the visual cortex, are first created in the cortex itself. Despite the prevalence of topographic maps, it is still not clear what function they subserve. Although maps are topographically smooth at the macroscale, they are

Responses of neurons in the cat primary auditory cortex to sequential sounds.

In the natural acoustic environment sounds frequently arrive at the two ears in quick succession. The responses of a cortical neuron to acoustic stimuli can be dramatically altered, usually suppressed, by a preceding sound. The purpose of this study was to determine if the binaural interaction evoked by a preceding sound is involved in subsequent suppressive interactions observed in auditory cortex neurons. Responses of neurons in the primary auditory cortex (AI) exhibiting binaural suppressive interactions (EO/I) were studied in barbiturate-anesthetized cats. For the majority (72.5%) of EO/I

Deprivation-Induced Plasticity in the Early Central Circuits of the Rodent Visual, Auditory, and Olfactory Systems.

Activity-dependent neuronal plasticity is crucial for animals to adapt to dynamic sensory environments. Traditionally, it has been investigated using deprivation approaches in animal models primarily in sensory cortices. Nevertheless, emerging evidence emphasizes its significance in sensory organs and in subcortical regions where cranial nerves relay information to the brain. Additionally, critical questions started to arise. Do different sensory modalities share common cellular mechanisms for deprivation-induced plasticity at these central entry points? Does the deprivation duration correlate

Cochlear enlightenment.

Of all mammalian receptor organs, the cochlea is the least understood. How it performs its most fundamental feat-the filtering of sound into different frequency bands over an enormous range of intensities-is still shrouded in mystery. Two of its neural systems, one a component of its dual output to the central nervous system (CNS) and the other a component of its dual feedback from the CNS, are in key cochlear positions but have escaped physiological study. At the same time, cochlear impairments affect an enormous and growing fraction of the population. Here we briefly highlight, from a system

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and the Auditory System: An Overview of the Mechanisms, Clinical Presentations, and Current Diagnostic Modalities.

The acute and long-term consequences of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are far reaching. Though it may often be overlooked due to the now expansive field of research dedicated to understanding the consequences of mTBI on the brain, recent work has revealed that substantial changes in the vestibulo-auditory system can also occur due to mTBI. These changes, termed "labyrinthine" or "cochlear concussion," include hearing loss, vertigo, and tinnitus that develop after mTBI in the setting of an intact bony labyrinthine capsule (as detected on imaging). In the review that follows, we focus our d

Hormones and the auditory system: a review of physiology and pathophysiology.

This review explores the potential role of hormones in modulating the auditory function. The review describes four groups of hormones (the hormones of the circadian cycle, reproduction, stress response and the fluid and electrolyte balance), their physiological variations, interactions, as well as the physiological basis for their effect on the auditory system. Possible contribution of hormones to pathophysiology of auditory dysfunctions, including hyperacusis, tinnitus, Menière's disease and pre-menstrual auditory dysfunction, has also been discussed.

[The role of the cerebellum in auditory process and tinnitus].

Cerebellum connects with each part of the auditory pathway directly or indirectly, forming the anatomical basis for a cerebellar role in auditory process. Functional imaging studies and clinical observations provide more abundant support for this view. Tinnitus is one of the most common clinical manifestations when the auditory system is impaired and remains unsolved. Basic science researches in neurotransmitter chemistry and molecular biochemistry, together with functional imaging studies, indicate that cerebellum might contribute to the pathophysiology of tinnitus. In this review we summariz

Hearing and music in dementia.

Music is a complex acoustic signal that relies on a number of different brain and cognitive processes to create the sensation of hearing. Changes in hearing function are generally not a major focus of concern for persons with a majority of neurodegenerative diseases associated with dementia, such as Alzheimer disease (AD). However, changes in the processing of sounds may be an early, and possibly preclinical, feature of AD and other neurodegenerative diseases. The aim of this chapter is to review the current state of knowledge concerning hearing and music perception in persons who have a demen

The mismatch negativity in evaluating central auditory dysfunction in dyslexia.

The mismatch negativity (MMN), a brain response elicited by a discriminable change in any repetitive aspect of auditory stimulation even in the absence of attention, has been widely used in both basic and clinical research during recent years. The fact that the MMN reflects the accuracy of auditory discrimination and that it can be obtained even from unattentive subjects makes it an especially attractive tool for studying various central auditory-system dysfunctions both in adults and children. In this review, we will discuss the applicability of the MMN to studies in dyslexia, which is curren

Centrifugal pathways protect hearing sensitivity at the cochlea in noisy environments that exacerbate the damage induced by loud sound.

Loud sounds damage the cochlea, the auditory receptor organ, reducing hearing sensitivity. Previous studies demonstrate that the centrifugal olivocochlear pathways can moderately reduce these temporary threshold shifts (TTSs), protecting the cochlea. This effect involves only the olivocochlear pathway component known as the crossed medial olivocochlear system pathway, originating from the contralateral brainstem and terminating on outer hair cells in the cochlea. Here I demonstrate that even moderate noise backgrounds can significantly exacerbate the cochlear TTSs induced by loud tones, but th

Adjunct Methods for Alzheimer's Disease Detection: A Review of Auditory Evoked Potentials.

The auditory afferent pathway as a clinical marker of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has sparked interest in investigating the relationship between age-related hearing loss (ARHL) and AD. Given the earlier onset of ARHL compared to cognitive impairment caused by AD, there is a growing emphasis on early diagnosis and intervention to postpone or prevent the progression from ARHL to AD. In this context, auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) have emerged as a widely used objective auditory electrophysiological technique for both the clinical diagnosis and animal experimentation in ARHL due to their non-inva

Auditory thalamus dysfunction and pathophysiology in tinnitus: a predictive network hypothesis.

Tinnitus is the perception of a 'ringing' sound without an acoustic source. It is generally accepted that tinnitus develops after peripheral hearing loss and is associated with altered auditory processing. The thalamus is a crucial relay in the underlying pathways that actively shapes processing of auditory signals before the respective information reaches the cerebral cortex. Here, we review animal and human evidence to define thalamic function in tinnitus. Overall increased spontaneous firing patterns and altered coherence between the thalamic medial geniculate body (MGB) and auditory cortic

Anatomy, physiology, and physics of the peripheral vestibular system.

Many medical doctors consider vertigo and dizziness as the major, almost obligatory complaints in patients with vestibular disorders. In this chapter, we will explain that vestibular disorders result in much more diverse and complex complaints. Many of these other complaints are unfortunately often misinterpreted and incorrectly classified as psychogenic. When we really understand the function of the vestibular system, it becomes quite obvious why patients with vestibular disorders complain about a loss of visual acuity, imbalance, fear of falling, cognitive and attentional problems, fatigue t

Ringing ears: the neuroscience of tinnitus.

Tinnitus is a phantom sound (ringing of the ears) that affects quality of life for millions around the world and is associated in most cases with hearing impairment. This symposium will consider evidence that deafferentation of tonotopically organized central auditory structures leads to increased neuron spontaneous firing rates and neural synchrony in the hearing loss region. This region covers the frequency spectrum of tinnitus sounds, which are optimally suppressed following exposure to band-limited noise covering the same frequencies. Cross-modal compensations in subcortical structures may

Dose-Dependent Pattern of Cochlear Synaptic Degeneration in C57BL/6J Mice Induced by Repeated Noise Exposure.

It is widely accepted that even a single acute noise exposure at moderate intensity that induces temporary threshold shift (TTS) can result in permanent loss of ribbon synapses between inner hair cells and afferents. However, effects of repeated or chronic noise exposures on the cochlear synapses especially medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent synapses remain elusive. Based on a weeklong repeated exposure model of bandwidth noise over 2-20 kHz for 2 hours at seven intensities (88 to 106 dB SPL with 3 dB increment per gradient) on C57BL/6J mice, we attempted to explore the dose-response mechanis
