Parkinson's disease deficits in time perception to auditory as well as visual stimuli - A large online study.

Cognitive deficits are common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and range from mild cognitive impairment to dementia, often dramatically reducing quality of life. Physiological models have shown that attention and memory are predicated on the brain's ability to process time. Perception has been shown to be increased or decreased by activation or deactivation of dopaminergic neurons respectively. Here we investigate differences in time perception between patients with PD and healthy controls. We have measured differences in sub-second- and second-time intervals. Sensitivity and error in perception as

Brainstem and early cortical auditory activities associated with language differences in acoustic cue weighting for voicing perception.

The purpose of the present study was to identify neural activities reflecting language differences in acoustic cue weighting for phonetic perception. We examined whether brainstem and early cortical auditory responses to voice-onset time (VOT) and onset frequency of fundamental frequency (onset F0) were different between two groups of listeners, native Japanese speakers and Korean second-language learners of Japanese, who use a VOT and onset F0, respectively, as the primary perceptual cue for voicing. In the experiment, we measured auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) and cortical N1 response o

Using a speech perception neural network computer simulation to contrast neuroanatomic versus neuromodulatory models of auditory hallucinations.

A number of studies suggest that schizophrenia may arise from overzealous pruning of synapses that are an extension of normal developmental pruning during adolescence. Moreover, there has been a long history of studies suggesting that this disorder arises from alterations in the dopaminergic neuromodulatory systems. In order to further assess and compare these two hypotheses, a computer simulation of some aspects of speech perception was developed utilizing a recurrent, backpropagation model of working memory previously reported by Elman . This system was found to produce spontaneous percepts

Left superior temporal gyrus activation during sentence perception negatively correlates with auditory hallucination severity in schizophrenia patients.

The left superior temporal cortex, which supports linguistic functions, has consistently been reported to activate during auditory-verbal hallucinations in schizophrenia patients. It has been suggested that auditory hallucinations and the processing of normal external speech compete for common neurophysiological resources. We tested the hypothesis of a negative relationship between the clinical severity of hallucinations and local brain activity in posterior linguistic regions while patients were listening to external speech. Fifteen right-handed patients with schizophrenia and daily auditory

Prosodic Differences in the Voices of Transgender and Cisgender Women: Self-Perception of Voice - An Auditory and Acoustic Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The voice is an important parameter for identifying the speaker's gender. Transgender people seek to adapt their bodies to gender identity, and transgender women have greater difficulties in achieving vocal acceptance. In this context, the evaluation of the various parameters of the voice of transgender and cisgender women is essential to make it possible to propose appropriate intervention measures. OBJECTIVES: To identify the differences in vocal characteristics of transgender and cisgender women. METHODS: An sectional study was conducted. The sample comprised 20 transgender

Eliciting false auditory perceptions using speech frequencies and semantic priming: a signal detection approach.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals experiencing auditory hallucinations (AH) tend to perceive voices when exposed to random noise. However, the factors driving this tendency remain unclear. The present study examined the interaction of a top-down (expectations) and bottom-up (type of noise) process to better understand the mechanisms that underlie AH. METHODS: Fifty-two healthy individuals (29 with high proneness and 23 with low proneness to AH) completed a signal detection task, in which they listened to pre-recorded sentences. The last word was either masked by noise or only noise was presented with

The role of expectancies and emotional load in false auditory perceptions among patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

Cognitive models suggest that top-down and emotional processes increase false perceptions in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). However, little is still known about the interaction of these processes in false auditory perceptions. The present study aimed at investigating the specific as well as joint impacts of expectancies and emotional load on false auditory perceptions in SSD. Thirty-three patients with SSD and 33 matched healthy controls were assessed with a false perception task. Participants were asked to detect a target stimulus (a word) in a white noise background (the word was pr

Non-Auditory Participant Characteristics Influence Digit-Perception Performance: Evidence From Tasks Varying in Masker Type and Spatial Cues.

Digit-perception tasks are widely used to assess auditory function in clinical and research settings, but performance may also be shaped by non-auditory participant characteristics. This study examined whether educational attainment, forward digit span, socioeconomic deprivation, and musical experience predicted performance on three digit-perception tasks that differed in masker type and spatial demands: digits in speech-shaped noise (SSN), digits in spatially separated babble, and a spatial-selective-attention task in which digit streams were separated by 15°. Participants were 220 young adul

Functional rate-code models of the auditory brainstem for predicting lateralization and discrimination data of human binaural perception.

This paper presents a rate-code model of binaural interaction inspired by recent neurophysiological findings. The model consists of a peripheral part and a binaural part. The binaural part is composed of models of the medial superior olive (MSO) and the lateral superior olive (LSO), which are parts of the auditory brainstem. The MSO and LSO model outputs are preprocessed in the interaural time difference (ITD) and interaural level difference (ILD) central stages, respectively, which give absolute values of the predicted lateralization at their outputs, allowing a direct comparison with psychop

Auditory processing and speech perception in children with specific language impairment: relations with oral language and literacy skills.

This longitudinal study investigated temporal auditory processing (frequency modulation and between-channel gap detection) and speech perception (speech-in-noise and categorical perception) in three groups of 6 years 3 months to 6 years 8 months-old children attending grade 1: (1) children with specific language impairment (SLI) and literacy delay (n = 8), (2) children with SLI and normal literacy (n = 10) and (3) typically developing children (n = 14). Moreover, the relations between these auditory processing and speech perception skills and oral language and literacy skills in grade 1 and gr

Left posterior auditory-related cortices participate both in speech perception and speech production: Neural overlap revealed by fMRI.

Recent neuroimaging studies and neuropsychological data suggest that there are regions in posterior auditory cortex that participate both in speech perception and speech production. An outstanding question is whether the same neural regions support both perception and production or whether there exist discrete cortical fields subserving these functions. Previous neurophysiological studies suggest that there is indeed regional overlap between these systems, but those studies used a rehearsal task to assess production. The present study addressed this question in an event-related fMRI experiment

Speech perception in preschoolers at family risk for dyslexia: relations with low-level auditory processing and phonological ability.

We tested categorical perception and speech-in-noise perception in a group of five-year-old preschool children genetically at risk for dyslexia, compared to a group of well-matched control children and a group of adults. Both groups of children differed significantly from the adults on all speech measures. Comparing both child groups, the risk group presented a slight but significant deficit in speech-in-noise perception, particularly in the most difficult listening condition. For categorical perception a marginally significant deficit was observed on the discrimination task but not on the ide

Does brain entrainment using binaural auditory beats affect pain perception in acute and chronic pain?: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Pain is a major clinical problem across all ages with serious social and economic consequences and a great negative impact on quality of life. Brain entrainment using binaural beats is a non-pharmaceutical intervention that is claimed to have analgesic effects in acute and chronic pain. We aimed to systematically review the available randomized clinical trials on the efficacy of binaural auditory beats in reducing adults' pain perception in acute and chronic pain. A systematic search in electronic databases including Medline (via PubMed), Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Central Re

Event-related brain potential markers of visual and auditory perception: A useful tool for brain computer interface systems.

OBJECTIVE: A majority of BCI systems, enabling communication with patients with locked-in syndrome, are based on electroencephalogram (EEG) frequency analysis (e.g., linked to motor imagery) or P300 detection. Only recently, the use of event-related brain potentials (ERPs) has received much attention, especially for face or music recognition, but neuro-engineering research into this new approach has not been carried out yet. The aim of this study was to provide a variety of reliable ERP markers of visual and auditory perception for the development of new and more complex mind-reading systems f

Effects of phase duration and pulse rate on loudness and pitch percepts in the first auditory midbrain implant patients: Comparison to cochlear implant and auditory brainstem implant results.

The auditory midbrain implant (AMI), which is designed for stimulation of the inferior colliculus (IC), is now in clinical trials. The AMI consists of a single shank array (20 contacts) and uses a stimulation strategy originally designed for cochlear implants since it is already approved for human use and we do not yet know how to optimally activate the auditory midbrain. The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of different pulse rates and phase durations on loudness and pitch percepts because these parameters are required to implement the AMI stimulation strategy. Although each

Multiparametric Acoustic Predictors: A Comprehensive Model for Auditory Perception of Overall Severity of Vocal Deviation in Brazilian Portuguese Speakers.

OBJECTIVE: To develop an acoustic model to predict the variability in the auditory perception of the overall severity (OS) of vocal deviation in male and female voices of Brazilian Portuguese speakers. METHOD: In total, 300 vocal samples (sustained vowel [a] and connected speech) from adults of both sexes (235 women and 65 men) were analyzed, including 269 individuals with dysphonia and 31 individuals without dysphonia. Five speech-language pathologists carried out the auditory-perceptual judgment of the OS using an analog-visual scale of 100 mm. A script in the free Praat software was used t

Non-motor basal ganglia functions: a review and proposal for a model of sensory predictability in auditory language perception.

While the primary function of the basal ganglia (BG) is linked to motor behaviour, several investigations of non-motor behaviour allocate cognitive and language-specific functions to the BG. What may such seemingly discrepant functions have in common? Some neurophysiologic theories of motor behaviour assign temporal sequencing, others the sequencing of general cognitive patterns to the BG. Turning to auditory language perception and syntax in particular, one may consider syntactic processing as a hierarchical sequencing phenomenon. Furthermore, previous data have shown that if events are predi

Reversible deficit affecting the perception of tone of a human voice after tumour resection from the right auditory cortex.

We report on a young woman operated for a ganglioglioma involving the right auditory cortex (AC), presenting with auditory seizures. Despite a normal pre-operative examination, a specific post-operative disorder affecting the perception of a human voice occurred. The patient was unable to recognise the tone of familiar voices while she recognised the expressed content. A temporal lobectomy for recurrence was performed two years later. The patient recovered from the voice perception deficit. This report shows that (1) a discrete site within the AC is specifically involved in the perception of t
